That was a wonderful performance last night we dominated and completely outplayed a side and ended the evening in 2nd place on goal difference yes it’s too early for yelling we are going up but it sure does feel good to see a structure of play and players understanding what they need to do to make it work. The energy and determination combined with good passing football makes the heart leap in a good way.
Some players who looked ordinary suddenly look different players Brown has come on a bundle over the summer as it seems has Tynon it really does speak to good coaching and that is also so encouraging from a supporter’s point of view. Their job now Is to show it’s evolution of a player they now need to prove its permanent when you set such standards you have to live up to them at least 4 games out of 5. It is clear that coaching has improved and the squad are benefiting from it.
The recruitment this summer has been very good it’s early yet and nobody should get carried away because it could fizzle out in 6 weeks but I have a good feeling about what I am seeing on the field right now.
The defence while young is really solid and the footballing ability of all three defenders gives a lot of hope for this season of course they are young and mistakes will be made but the odd mistake is much better than the circus clown show our defence was for much of our time in the Championship. they look so committed and more they look a cut above the Championship. they look so talented people have forgotten that Nathan Collins was sold his sale paved the way for Wilmott and the loan of Ostigard which looks a gem of a signing.
The players who play no part in the clubs plans for the most have been moved on which is a huge relief and the club should be congratulated but with the caveat that they were also responsible for those players being here on such long lucrative contracts in the first place.
The young players at the club are improving the U-23s play a very exciting brand of football and it’s great to see the first team finally matching it slick football while pressing and forcing the opposition into mistakes instead of the slow cumbersome football we have played over the last 3 seasons because of the lack of energy within the squad.
Will we be promotion contenders for me it’s way too early to know but I honestly believe if we continue as we have begun we certainly will give good value for money this season and that’s all most supporters ask for considering the mess we were in. The squad still needs a little refining but if the recruitment is as good for those few final places that need strengthening as it has been the future does finally look bright once more.
The one thing we do know for sure the supporters will get behind such an exciting brand of football and will forgive the odd mistake because hey can see where we are going, it is vital that supporters can see the plan before them, when supporters watch on while there seems no clear footballing plan they become frustrated and angry when they can clearly see what is happening they can get behind it and realise it won’t always work.
While the style might be different the rumblings for me are the same as when we started out on the promotion season under Pulis. I know some will say we haven’t played the big hitters yet but I don’t think we have anything to fear from the so called promotion favourites I know they are raving about Fulham but who have they played this season it’s a long slog and I think it will be a good ride this season and a couple of more quality additions before the deadline and we really could be the talk of more than just Sroke this season.

A quality post Ted. Whatever lies ahead we're looking like a real team, playing with intent, a plan, determination and a togetherness that hasn't always been too visible in the last few years. Different style to TP's promotion heroes maybe but very similar rumblings as you say. I had a strong gut feeling that we would go up in 2008. Way too early to get carried away but that old gut feeling is back. UTP

Hopefully we don't get the injuries we had around Christmas last season,we were playing well but then we had over half a team out injured for the majority of the season but didn't have the squad and half the players didn't want to be here, not being negative but something around the squad feels different this season more of a togetherness and want to play for the manager.

I've not been to Stoke for some time, due to the dreadful standard of football. I watched the game last night and was mightily impressed with the football, pace and passing. I don't care what league I watch Stoke in, providing I watch a game of 'football'. I saw enough last night to spark my enthusiasm once more, so will be returning on Saturday. The transformation is remarkable and MON should be proud.

Excellent OP.
The only thing I would add is that the club has done an excellent job getting rid of the dead wood. It must be hugely demoralising being part of a huge squad not knowing what your realistic chances are with so many highly paid players on long contracts. Particularly so for the younger members of the squad and the academy.
Shifting out 16 (?) players not only reducing the wage bill, it lifts a cloud over the club, and motivates the players to try harder, knowing there is improved opportunity to advance their career, and not wanting to be the next to go.

That high press is glorious, hoping we can maintain that. And totally agree on the need for us to tolerate the "odd mistake" on defense, that's a trade-off we can live with. It appears that the style of the U23's has crept into the first team (Good job Rooster!) Love seeing that.
Nothing to fear but fear itself. Being up 1-0 should serve as a battle-cry to hit them even harder, which seems to be the current plan. I said before, nothing wrong with winning games 3-1 instead of 1-0. So...since saying that worked before. . . Nothing wrong with winning 4-0 either! A tough league, but if we start turning misses into hits and working on the Defense, it will happen. MON has been making substitutions that matter, the staff is getting a tune out of the players, so they've stepped up their game.
These early wins are setting a beat that we can dance to. That garbage of stumbling into a season unfit and losing the first 2 or 3 games needs to stay in the past where it belongs. Not going to "expect" a certain finishing spot this year. We have improvements to maintain and a team identity to develop. I'd be happy with that for the year.

We just need to keep up last night’s intensity. Against Brum there were worrying signs of Stoke Strollers re-emerging. MON has to keep the play at high tempo. I think it was more a case of Birmingham dictating the pace by taking 40 seconds for every throw in,and slowing the game down too suit them.

Mon seems to morph into a different manager every season I think it's also the case that it takes time to develop some players and time to get the right players in. These additions have transformed the team. It doesn't take many players to transform a team. Look at the effect Nzonzi had. Changed the way we played and changed our style of play because of his impact.

When you look at brown, tymon, clucas even Allen yesterday, you have to check they’re the same players from last season. Awesome stuff. The new cloughie. Probably.

Was clear he had ability but needed work on a few parts of his game, the same seems to be happening with Tymon and Brown especially.

Mon seems to morph into a different manager every season The earliest Pacific Islanders conceptualised navigating the oceans thus: the boat stays in the same place, it is the world around you that moves.

True, but the better teams were able to overcome that and we regularly struggled against them. Lyle Taylor was on 5Live last night for the football coverage. When they got around to discussing our fine demolition of Swansea he said that when teams go to Stoke this season they will generally be playing for a 0-0 but hoping they can nick it and he thinks that’s how it will be when he and his Forest team visit on Saturday. Seems we are becoming well respected again! BM
