Sainsbury’s do some excellent extra mature Barbers cheddars, always have that plus Port Salut, a decent Camembert and we’ve gone to Shropshire blue in place of Stilton recently too. Could live on cheese , love the stuff. Good choices on thread too

Twanger – A really punchy West Country Cheese.
Cheshire Cheese – I don’t know the best brand, but I love Cheshire Cheese.
Baked Camembert – with a fresh crusty baguette.
Just about any extra-mature, crunchy Cheddar – Melted inside a warmed oatcake.

or lily james over edith piaf (smiley face) Erm...no? There are some excellent British cheeses, they should be championed more, but you said 'any'. Some basic crappy supermarket cheddar is just shit

Take the cheese out of its plastic wrapper first, unlike a mate of mine. He won't do that again.

Like most cheeses except the hard swiss types such as Emmental or Gruyere that just have this flavour I struggle to stomach.
Love Mature cheddar, Roquefort & Roquefort sauce with steak and chips, as well as a good Raclette.

I like the Swiss ones actually though they are different, actually had a cheese sauce with chicken using Gruyère and was lovely though the Mrs declared it the most disgusting thing she'd ever had ( might have been referring to me, on reflection lol ) Horses for courses , but the hard Spanish cheeses like Manchego are ace with tapas, and there is a ton of regional varieties , Majorca had a local goats cheese that was delicious that I've never had anywhere else.

Stilton is top of the list then in no particular order
Wensleydale Shropshire Blue Cheshire Cheddar Saint Nectaire Camembert Cambozola Roquefort Emmental Manchego
Plus many others !

At the moment it’s mature or vintage cheddar and Yorkshire Blue. But favourites change because just love trying them out. Never, ever go with in 10 miles of Stinking Bishop.

I’ve always thought the best oatcake cheese is wensleydale I’ve never had Wensleydale, is it like Cheshire? I like Cheshire on my bacon and cheese oatcakes. To my peers’ bemusement 👀 It has a similar crumbly texture to Cheshire although not quite as distinctive taste (to my palate). Legend has it that sales of Wensleydale had declined to such an extent that supermarkets no longer stocked it and it became likely that production of the cheese in Yorkshire was about to cease almost entirely, and then along came Wallace and Gromit, and it's never looked back.

I adore Cheddar too, Lawrie, but I can't eat even a smidge of it as for me it's a very, VERY serious migraine trigger. If anyone else is similarly affected by Cheddar and has to avoid it, I find Lancashire cheese to be the closest I can get to Cheddar without virtually signing my own death warrant with every bite. Oh, Cracker Barrel Extra Mature - if only! Talking about strong cheeses, my first-ever trip abroad was for an Easter skiing hol to Switzerland (from school, 3rd form), and on odd days off, when we visited towns, I remember going into various little shops & loving to see all their fascinating touristy items - lots of carved wooden things, tiny models of chalets, etc. - and delicious aromas of coffee in food shops + wonderful selections of all sorts of fancy chocolate - after all, it was Easter…... The most intoxicating and complex smells, though, came from inside the many cheese shops - and all you could say when you walked in was 'oooooh'! Scents/fragrances always seem to stay in the memory for ever, and one whiff of something or other can always transport you back, often many years, in an instant, and one whiff of 'highly perfumed' cheese still takes me right back there. I always love looking at cheese counters in France for the same reason. I've never tried Stinking Bishop, but might just try some now. If I do, I'll let you know!
