Nige is nige, he’s obviously getting on but I can’t imagine Radio Stoke will be in a hurry to move him on because they know how it’ll go down with the majority of fans. Pejic though, I’m not sure he ever has anything positive to say about Stoke nowadays. Pejic isn’t cut out for commentary, Nige is an institution. I preferred it when we had the spell of more recent former players on comms like Clive Clarke, Carl Cort etc. Pejic still thinks we’re in the 70’s

Him and Pejic losing their shit at the stoppage in play during the 2nd half when the linesman had to go off was so, so frustrating. They assumed it was because the players wanted a drinks break! To be fair, I was at the game and I thought the delay was for a drinks break, as did everyone else around me🙂 Yet everyone near me could see the liner was struggling and were aware of the reason for the stoppage.

So basically some knew the stoppage was due to the liner and some thought it was for a drinks break. Hardly a reason to castigate poor old Nige😁

Nigel Johnson is a LEGEND end of. So he makes a mistake or two, get over it you whinging spoilt brats. He's 84 years old, is the God of the commentary box and part & parcel of the Stoke match day experience that I hope continues for as long as he wishes to continue. Maybe he needs a little bit of support here & there in recognising certain players & names. I'm 58 and I do occasionally! After everything we've been through in the past 18 months have we learnt nothing about love, compassion & kindness. Nige is entrenched in the Stoke City family and real Stokies look after their families, especially the older members of their family who need a helping hand.
Yesterday, my son and his girlfriend attended the match (they met at uni in Edinburgh & discovered their mutual Stoke connection) & she approached Nigel to introduce herself as the grand daughter of a former teaching colleague and friend of Nige (and lifelong Stoke City supporter) at 90 years old is experiencing dementia. Nigel was saddened to hear about this but delighted to meet his friend's grand daughter and immediately arranged a shout out during the match commentary. This was an act of kindness from a lovely man, it made the families day and it just affirms what he, Stoke City & Stoke-On-Trent is all about.
Thanks Nige & carry on. We love you. UTP

He's paid to do a job from our licence fees, don't people have the right to criticise something they pay for when it's poor service? Some muppets just like to criticise at every opportunity. Think you can do a better job than him, go apply to the BBC. Paid by our Licence fees? Do me a favour, he'll be lucky to get £100, travel expenses and all the coffee he can drink. Some Muppets like to criticise people at every opportunity who like to criticise. Was I criticising him, I just said people have the right to criticise if they pay for a service don't they? Commentating isn't what I'm trained or paid to do, unlike Nige, so why would I apply to the BBC ?

Intuitively, commentating sounds like it ought to be easy. It's just talking about something you love and saying what you see, right?
Try it.
Pick a five minute piece of video of a Stoke match, not some famous bit of history where every frame is already in your head but some random stretch of an unremarkable game. Give yourself a couple of minutes to draw up a bit of paper with the formations and players names, so you're comfortable with who's who for the opposition. Then play the video with the sound down and record yourself commentating. See if you can paint a picture with words.
Then, if you can stand it, play the clip and the recording back again.
Listen to the silence, the stuttering, the mistakes, the repetition and the clichés.
Honestly, give it a go. I tried it and you wouldn't believe how difficult it is.

Putting Nige aside.
I may have missed it on another thread but the stream on the website took the BBC Radio Stoke commentary and when Stoke scored the first goal they were doung an audio add.
When they came back they linked to the vale commentary not Stoke commentary.
Only came back to the Stoke commentary after the Reading goal.
Farcical

NJ's repeated level of incompetence is at best amusing and I hope it's only a case of "Specsavers" and not something more ominous. He is, however, well past his 'use-buy' date and by the look of him must be in his 80s age-wise.
Definitely-Time To Go-for him and let someone younger and more capable reap the benefit of a not instubstantial Match Day commentary fee.

The same could be said about any job though. If I tried to plaster a wall right now, it would be a total mess. But if I’d been doing it for decades and it was my ‘trade’, you would expect that I’d be good at it, or at least wouldn’t make many mistakes.

Re the co-commentator role, l too would enjoy hearing more from those who've graced the shirt in, say, the last 15-20 years or so rather than the guys from the '70s, legends though they may be. Might help to lower the average Radio Stoke demographic too.

Absolutely, practice, over decades, will definitely make you better at most things. But it's not a completely fair comparison because of the time element. I'm a computer engineer and if I get a particularly horrible issue I can slow down and be meticulous. Same to an extent with plastering assuming the contents of your bucket doesn't set. But there are some jobs (referee, air traffic control, commentator etc) where events force themselves upon you and you have to react in real time. Practice will help but I don't know if that innate ability to think on your feet as a commentator could be learned, at least not without resorting to stock phrases/responses absolutely all the time, and being unlistenable as a result?

In days of yore Nige has given me some magic moments listening to his dulcet tones describe our latest catastrophe on the road and occasionally the surprising triumph.. Yet that was then and now is now and all good things must come to an end. The last thing I or any long-standing Stoke fan wants to read or hear about is Nige’s demise as the institution he truly is. Nige, thanks for the memories but maybe it’s time for you to think about letting someone else do the job (although of course nobody would ever come close to this legend)

He's clearly shown dedication to the job! 84 years old you say? Wow Commentating isn't easy and even with the sometimes hilarious mistakes of mispronunciation and player identification, that voice means that a Stoke match is on, plain & simple. There comes a time in every career when it's time to go, but whenever that is, he should be allowed to go gracefully and of his own accord.
I'd be very careful what you wish for, sports now are afflicted with many modern commentators that if their voice doesn't grate on your nerves enough, they downright piss you off due to agendas, bias, ego, fake hype and general stupidity.
