Chris Baird and Paddy McNair would also have been deployed in that position at times. Possibly Saville and Norwood to some degree too? Just looked at Saville - what the feck going on there? Signed for Millwall 16/17 for 500k went on loan to Middlesbrough start of 18/19 then was signed by Boro in Jan 19 for £7m!! And has this window just re-signed for Millwall for undisclosed fee???? That’s got dodgy dealings written all over it. Yes definitely, especially saville I forgot all about him. Sammy clingan would have been another too. That's a crazy fee for him. When he first came into the NI setup he was excellent and one of our better performers but the last two seasons he's not quite been the same player and been quite sloppy too. Pretty sure he made a few costly mistakes in the playoffs which ultimately stopped us from qualifying for the Euros too.

Who's going to do the dirty work alongside him though - are we tasking Allen with that? Tbf to Joe, he’s done it surprisingly well in preseason, evident no use aerially but he’s been stopping opposition midfields from waltzing through like at times last season(season before). He’s fluffed his lines a few times though when it comes to him then trying to play it out so maybe Garner with him- seems he’s be a good shout for picking the ball up and starting the play? He’s just about 6 foot and does look rather light, would be good to have someone to help with aerial duels for when we come up against the Millwalls etc and teams go long. The issue for me is that we've needed for a long time some positional discipline and some energy and bite. That for me is what our priority in midfield should be.

Will he get in the team if he comes to us? We seem to have to have enough in midfield already!

Nottingham Forest are still waiting on James Garner to make a decision over his future — but the Championship club remain hopeful that the Manchester United man will return for a second spell at the City Ground, reports Paul Taylor
The midfielder will depart on loan once the final details of a new contract at Old Trafford are confirmed — and it is expected that the 20-year-old will hold significant sway over his destination.
Forest have not won the fight yet, with Championship rivals Stoke City also having pushed hard to land Garner on loan. The Athletic understands that they also believe they have a fighting chance of luring Garner down the M6.
But while Michael O’Neill is keen to add him to his Stoke squad and Swansea are among a clutch of other clubs — including Bundesliga and Premier League sides — who are trailing the player, Forest are hopeful that their existing relationship with Garner will tip things in their favour.
Arch-rivals Derby are also understood to be interested, with Wayne Rooney hopeful of utilising his United connections, but it remains unclear how any potential move could be impacted by their current transfer embargo.
The Athletic understands Garner is open to the idea of a Forest return.
And Forest manager Chris Hughton is certainly hopeful that Garner will return to add to the 19 starts and single substitute appearance he made with Forest last season when he also scored four goals.
“We hope so,” Hughton told The Athletic, when asked if he expected Garner to return for another loan spell. “We generally do not talk specifically about players signing, but James is one who made a contribution we were delighted with last season.
“We are very, very grateful to Manchester United for that happening and his future will be in his hands and the hands of United. But we hope we are in the frame. It will be down to him and to United.”

Isn't that how a player would drive from Manchester to Stoke? Or A34 if he didn’t want motorway travel…. Is this lad the player we need then? Is he a midfield destroyer or box to box type?

Or A34 if he didn’t want motorway travel…. Is this lad the player we need then? Is he a midfield destroyer or box to box type? More a deep-lying playmaker. That seems to be the role that Baker was playing largely in Turkey last year too? But not really the Ali McCann profile from the bits I've read. And Sawyers doesn't seem to be a great fit there either? theathletic.co.uk/2101668/2020/09/30/romaine-sawyers-west-bromwich-albion-fan-criticism/For the first half of 2019-20, as West Brom often turned on the style to establish themselves in the Championship’s top two, Sawyers was one half of a central midfield double-act with Jake Livermore. The system did not place Sawyers in his favourite position — as a forward-thinking No 8 providing a quick, inventive link between deeper players and the forwards — but it put him close enough that he could be hugely effective.
Sawyers’ ability to spot and execute passes quickly between the defensive lines allowed him to dictate the tempo as Slaven Bilic’s side sat in first place on Christmas Day. Opposition scouts identified him as the crucial cog in Albion’s well-oiled machine.
When West Brom changed the shape of their team to try to escape a mid-season slump, it was Sawyers who suffered most.
The switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 worked well for many members of Bilic’s squad.
For Sawyers, though, the changes meant doing a job for the team in a position that blunted some of his attacking qualities. The 28-year-old was asked to sit as the deepest-lying figure in a new-look midfield trio, effectively serving as a quarterback — getting the ball to team-mates with flair, pace and energy in the right areas.
He has the passing range to start attacks as needed, but that role also required more defensive discipline than he had been accustomed to playing with. He was the man charged with both starting attacks and breaking up those of opponents.
Sawyers did an admirable job, but never looked entirely at home. Tackling and screening are not his strengths and his passes become less effective the deeper he plays.
Just trying to get a grasp of what we're looking for in presumably what will be our sole additional midfielder. It'd be good to know who we're prioritising. There certainly seems to be something in the Garner link - and Nixon maintains there's something in all 4 links

More a deep-lying playmaker. Oh sound, be good if he’s strong in the tackle. We’ve struggled to link with the forwards, whilst protecting the back 4 or 3. Sounds like he's in the Carrick mould and not much of a tackler, but if he's positionally disciplined that's good news at least.

Just hoping we can get a balanced midfield with a bit of bite though, fear that could come back to haunt us if we don't.

I think we need athleticism in our midfield, given we are likely to be playing 2 out of Allen, Vrancic & Powell alongside them. The team as a whole lacks a bit of pace and athleticism, which you do need in this league.

Anyone else think this one won't happen?
It's been way too drawn out & they never seem to come off when they've rumbled on for a while, especially lately.
I also really like the sound of this McCann lad and hoping the turks do us a massive favour for once.
