Thoughts The Toxic Avenger ? Tactics, player performances etc Who would you go with on Saturday? I thought he got it absolutely spot on mate. Kept their wing backs pegged back, were patient and controlled and took our chances when they came. For all the whining people were doing first half, this was always the plan and it will continue to be. And it seems to be working pretty well. He often gets his subs wrong but thought he used them well today. Was braver than I would’ve been in leaving the two midfielders on after their bookings and both were excellent. Stuck with Kane when I’d have taken him off and that was the right call. Timing of the Grealish sub was spot on and don’t think it’s as simple as ‘start him and we wrap it up sooner’. Think the next match should see us revert to a back four, with Trippier out and one of Grealish/Mount/Foden in. Cheers mate. Always interested in your insight.

Just thinking back and that might be the first time I’ve ever seen us beat Germany in my 44 year existence.
I was on a flight to Sydney when we thrashed them 5-1, and locked up in a Brussels cell awaiting deportation when we beat them in Euro 2000.
Can’t think of any other games friendly or otherwise?

Came back from 2-0 down to win in Berlin in a friendly a few years back I think? Was a weird friendly under Capello that an odd England side with Upson, Stewart Downing and Agbonlahor won in Germany too.

We did beat them 3-2 in a friendly in 2016 I think, Dier scored a last minute winner from a corner.

Now just to approach the argument with the missus about jibbing her dad's BBQ off on Saturday.

I was talking to my German "family" yesterday on WhatsApp pre kickoff and my prediction was 2-0 to England and Kane and Sterling. Wish I'd had a tenner on it.

As much as it wasn't exactly a joy to watch for most of the game, it has to be accepted that Southgate had a plan and it worked.
I see it as a bit like the Pulis era here at Stoke - it was hugely successful and gave us some fantastic times, but on a day to day basis a lot of it was turgid to watch, even as a Stoke supporter. Goodness knows what other fans must've thought. And I speak as a fan of the Pulis era.

Goodness knows what other fans must've thought. And I speak as a fan of the Pulis era. To be honest mate if Scotland had nicked one at Wembley I’d have had it down as Scotland’s best ever performance despite the rest of Europe probably being bored off their absolute tits. From as proximate to neutral as I can be thought England were the less sh!t of the two sides up to 60-70 minutes but were fairly obviously the better of the two sides for the last quarter of the game. I think as much has been pinned on the Grealish substitute Germany fucked it up taking Werner off too because as soon as it was Muller up top you just pushed right up and Germany looked absolutely clueless in what they were attempting to achieve – when you scored the second they looked anything from German as they were all over the shop. Just shows how thin the line is because half way through the second half Southgate was probably on a shoogly peg if England lost given how they setup. Totally understandable because it was like you were playing the semi before the last 16 and QF given how the draw has shaped up – all that really mattered was getting through really. No doubting it’s been Greece levels of boring so far but you could probably skelp a few goals in the next two rounds not even hitting top gear. England have got a deep squad filled with more of the exciting talent whereas Ukraine / Denmark / Czech’s will be getting into the arse end of theirs likely playing in the local leagues.

It was a brilliant victory in every sense of the word. Anybody who expected a thriller like we had in both games the previous day must be deluded. Southgate is a pragmatic manager who tries to play to his players' strengths. He got everything spot on last night. Our defence is awesome. Stones's progress reminds me of how Steve Bould progressed from a kid into the great player he became. A couple of years ago he was like a rabbit in the headlights but now he looks every inch a top class central defender. We have a blend of youth and experience and options all over the park. The substitutions were perfect.
I was so pleased for Southgate. He can finally put THAT penalty miss behind him now.
Will it continue? I've no idea, but I'm beginning to feel confident that we can make the final.
OS.

Shaw had a good game. Really good. I think you are only half right Joe. Shaw was never more than average in the first half, I thought. He was rather better in the third quarter and shone in the last quarter when Grealish was on the pitch and Sterling moved to the right. This isn't particularly knocking Shaw and certainly not knocking Sterling. But the addition of Grealish suddenly seemed to give Shaw licence to operate much more in the final third of the pitch - which given that he was a wing back and not a full back is where he could do most damage.

For those asking what it was like in the stadium …This in a nutshell and replicated on every single seat on every single tier Ay up, Werrington, do you have an England flag with Werrington across it? If so, you need to get yourself a copy of today's Daily Telegraph, you're on p5 of the Sport section!
