If we don't sign a sitting midfielder who can turn over possession that will be the undoing of us this season.
The balance isn't there and Joe will never be that sort of player. Btw I do think Allen is a good player but just never been the right fit for us

Agreed, midfield balance doesn't look right. All 3 good players in their own right, just as a 3, way too porous, especially away from home.

Although Clucas signed a new deal, it would not surprise me if he left before the window ended for a fee, leaving us even more wriggle room. Would be absolutely astonished if that happened He was very publicly available on a free this summer Clearly no one wanted to pay the money he was on Any manager paying a fee for him now when they could have had him for nothing should be sacked on the spot

If we ever to a back four, it enables us to bring in an extra midfielder and push Powell up top with Surridge perhaps. A new DM is key to our chances this season. Allen could play further up with Vrancic in a three and Powell rarely lasts 90, and the same will probably go for Vrancic. However, it's how MON manages the personnel at his disposal and he's often been dodgy with subbing players at the right time. I'm not a fan of 3-5-2 unless the wing backs are good enough. Doughty looks to have the legs and pace, but Smith is a right back in essence. Still, with Souttar, Leo and Wilmott as our back three, I must admit it'll be akin to a brick wall for the opposition.

I prefer Smith as RWB than RB i.e. further up the pitch putting crosses in, as he did last Saturday, rather than close to own goal where he switches off too often

I'd prefer a younger option Lord, a fully fledged RWB as opposed to a makeshift one. Doughty is a little bit of an experiment there too.

Agree there Smith as competition/cover for a first choice RWB Coates looks like he could end up being that player but (as with Porter,Norton, Sparrow and Macari) needs a loan away first

If - we do buy him i would say the best option is to loan him back to Fleetwood till either Jan or the season. Thus get him further up to 1st team ready for next season when we will need ready made players.

I doubt we can afford to buy him and loan him back, I’d imagine anyone we sign permanently will be straight in the first team.

If there's anything in this one at all, he doesn't seem a.) first-team ready or b.) someone like Garner, who'd play as the deepest midfielder, does he?
Seems much more of an energetic ball-carrier from reports.

Going off the fact he did not start/ or even on the bench for their league game last week plus played on loan at Grimsby last season, thus not yet established at Fleetwood. Glad he showed his talent in the cup game but ready for regular first team starts in the championship is another level from were he is now, thus why i think a loan back would be ideal if this move is viable.

Is this thinking along a similar idea as to say Surridge? Who wasn’t playing much 1st team football and therefore isn’t ready? If he was to sign, he’d be our one and only defensive midfielder so by default he’d be the best we got for that position.

Surridge i have seen play previously a few times at league 2 and championship level, i have not seen Matete play live to date. I know we have not got an ideal defensive midfielder but as i said above i have my doubts he could walk into a championship side at this moment in time going off his experience to date.

He was energetic, raw and motivated but a long way from Kante. I'm not sure if he could step up, probably but a risk still.

Porter was our best midfielder for the 70 minutes he was on. Thompson and Clucas were the disappointments. Matete played well, but it’s the only game I’ve seen him play and it wasn’t a great stream- I wouldn’t pass comment on whether he’s ready or not, but this transfer team seem to have a better way of assessing talent than the previous mob; I’ll trust their decision.

You’ve only got to look at Leicester’s title winning team…..no way would they have won it without Kante
