This is 'top flight' penalties scored but doesn't tell you how many they missed.
Conclusion - we haven't had an established penalty taker since SJW and we don't get many penalties!
Harry Burrows 12 Frank Mountford 12 Jon Walters 11 Paul Maguire 10 John Ritchie 7 Bojan 5 Marko Arnautović 4 Ian Painter 4 Charlie Adam 3 Terry Conroy 3 Matthew Etherington 3 Jimmy Greenhoff 3 Geoff Hurst 3 Alec Ormston 3 Arthur Turnern3 James Beattie 2 Ricardo Fuller 2

Harry Burrows only missed once that I can remember and he went the longest time without missing. His technique was perfect. Low and hard just inside the post.

I’m surprised James Beattie only scored 2? He was an outstanding penalty taker so I must have observed his quality from the spot whilst he was playing for his other clubs.
Not top flight, but I thought George Berry was a good penalty taker back in the day.

Geoff Salmons was the first penalty taker I remember (been going Stoke a few years before Geoff joined but too young to remember a specific penalty taker) . I always thought he scored more than one so surprised he is not on the list.

Where's Joe when you need him?Beattie only actually scored 9 or 10 goals for us in total.

Watching his general play he's be the last player you'd expect to be good at penalties, but he was surprisingly consistent from the spot!

Not top flight but Bertie Biggings took a decent penalty As did Steino, 5 of his 26 league goals in 92/93 were penalties.

Was on the Boothen when Painter missed against Coventry one balmy summer evening. Might of crashed off the bar ? Memory does play tricks but i'm surprised to see he scored 4 can't recall him as a regular taker.

SJW always inspired confidence. 100mph down the middle. Unless that is he has scored a couple of own goals beforehand. He was normally pretty reliable, but that day was crazy.

I’m surprised people are suggesting Stein and Walters. I found both to be quite erratic from the spot.

He took a couple of pens at least I'm sure. 1 against Spurs when the ball kept blowing off the spot due to the wind sticks particularly in the mind.

This is the list source. Prem and the old Div 1 only. Shows 1 for Higgy but of course it may not be accurate. Stoke City Penalty Scorers

I think most of Higgy’s pens were in the championship. We also had Lawrence, Fuller, Ethers and Beattie for penalties at that time. Basically used up 15 years of good penalty takers in one foul swoop.

George Berry was the best by far in my lifetime.
Was always confident he’d score when he stepped up.
Luke Chadwick however......
