Yes clearly. But at the time he looked awful. Not having it with Bale though. We were linked with a shit left back there. He’d have been an awful signing. Unbelievable 😂 Why? We would have signed him to play left back wouldn’t we? And he was a woeful left back. What makes you think it would have worked?

Gareth Bale, for much of his career considered the third best footballer in the world, would have been an awful signing for Stoke. As I understand it, because he was playing left back at the time. Thank goodness the pubs and gyms are open tomorrow. Yes playing as a winger/up front. Do you think we would have done that? And do you think he would have developed the same? We were linked with a player who was a left back and playing really badly (hence the link). It’s crazy to think automatically we would have got the Balw we know now. Indeed it’s really stupid.

That isn’t what you said is it. You said it would be an awful signing for Stoke. Somebody of Bale’s ability finds his way. This isn’t a question of playing Arnautovic as a striker rather than a winger. He’s a cut above. I’m not even going to get into the hypothetical scenario of what would have happened if Bale signed for Stoke but it certainly wouldn’t have been awful. I think you know that.

We were signing him for left back and he was (and still probably is) a useless left back. I don’t think that at all. I think he would have been terrible for us.

just going to say the same. was Gareth Bale on loan all over again. Another one. When we were linked he was an awful left back. Awful? This is from Wikipedia: On 17 April 2006, at the age of 16 years and 275 days, Bale became the second youngest player ever to play for Southampton In December 2006, he won the Carwyn James Award for the BBC Wales Young Sports Personality of the Year and was named the Football League Young Player of the Year on 4 March 2007. This capped what was described in the local press as an "incredible" first full season as a professional footballer in which he was one of the Saints' "most creative players even (though operating) from the left-back position whilst his defending improved immeasurably as the season progressed." His final game for Southampton was in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final against Derby County on 12 May 2007. Bale suffered an injury during the second half, preventing him from appearing in the second leg. In total, he made 45 appearances for Southampton, scoring five goals. On 25 May 2007, Bale signed a four-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur with the club paying an initial £5 million for the player, potentially rising to £10 million based on appearances and success.[

Which is what we were. He had that run of 18ish games where he never won a PL game and then was dropped wasn’t he? Played u23 football, was touted around (hence the link to us) and in the mean time was pushed forward and became the player he was in his prime.

To be fair, there is a huge, huge difference in the Stuart Dallas pre Bielsa and the Stuart Dallas with Bielsa. He has transformed him and quite a few others in that squad. Ayling at right back is another, as is Alioski. Pretty average Championship players before he turned up. Manager was Nathan Jones btw. There was a guy on here going on about Bielsa years ago when things started to go backwards under Hughes, unfortunately he isn’t British so wouldn’t have been on our radar Not sure if it was me but I did bang the bielsa drum as hughes started to struggle and at the time I think we might have had the pull to bring him in. With Bojan, Arnie, Shaq etx. How different it all could have been

Just digest that.

Why? We would have signed him to play left back wouldn’t we? And he was a woeful left back. What makes you think it would have worked? Ok ill play your ridiculous game. What do you think the chances of Pulis trusting Bale at LB would have been? The man played centre backs at full back and full backs as strikers. Maybe Pulis would have discovered his attacking talent quicker? Just admit you got it wrong. It’s easier sometimes.

It’s totally fanciful to think Bale would have been anywhere near to what he became if he joined us. He’d have barely got a game.

He actually is exactly who I was thinking of that makes me believe we wouldn’t have done it. And even that move was desperation because we’re skint.

It's beautiful how wrong some people can be and spend post after post digging themselves deeper and deeper into the hole they've created. No doubt they'll still defend the stance they took by saying 'at the time I was right' and putting a smiley emoji on their post. Pie in the sky.
