Makes the decision to take Gunn on loan again next season even more bizarre.
It’s a big wage that would be much better spent on other areas of the squad.

Strap yourself in for a very tough window, from what he said, we pretty much might not be able to get the better bosmans this summer. Frustrating, but reality.

I'd say there's an angle to this. Casually dropping it into an interview reads to me like the club are trying to get him to drop into the new pay structure he talked about.
Putting it out in public will be a tactic they try first.

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/birmingham-stoke-city-live-stream-5283951Nick Powell's contract situationPowell is out of contract at the end of next season - and talks about an extension are difficult at the moment because of Financial Fair Play.
Michael O'Neill told Radio Stoke: "It''s very difficult for us to do that at this minute in time because of the rules of FFP. We have players that are on contracts that are on contracts that are quite different to the players who have signed since I came to the club.
"We have to be mindful in terms of that and setting the bar for wages that we're prepared to pay and able to pay. At this minute in time we're not in a position to be able to extend contracts.
"We'll look at the situation in the summer. Nick has a year to go and he obviously has had a very strong season. Those are the types of player you want to keep at the club.
"At the moment, as we are readjusting financially how we are as a club, it's more difficult to have those conversations."
O'Neill: "We brought players to the football club and contracts are markedly different to what previous managers had done in previous windows. For players who signed under those managers, the landscape is different now.
"We are coming out of a year of Covid with no fans and football has changed as well, the Championship has changed, and that's something we have to adapt to as a club as well."
He added: "It doesn't worry me. I know what's required in this situation. Players leave football clubs if they get a better opportunity or more money, pretty much that's how it works.
"I know that from having moved a lot in my own career. That hasn't changed from when I was a player.
"You have to adapt and deal with the circumstances as they are at this minute. That's what we've done in this period, in the three transfer windows we've had to date and it's probably what we're going to have to continue to do, certainly in the next two transfer windows when the majority of those - for want of a better word - legacy contracts come to an end.
"We're constantly trying to readjust where we are as a club and we're constantly trying improve the team in that timeframe as well."

Wonder how mnany other clubs are affected in this way atm?
Hopefully a message to the board to try even harder to offload those surplus to requirements and out on loan
Still quite a challenge

Why is it so hard to understand that (if you have no keeper and desperately need one) you don't dictate the terms of a loan. We probably were unable to pay his full wages and as a result of accepting an extra year the rumour is that we are paying little or nothing of his wages. I presume that you would have refused the deal and played Blondie instead.

It's relevent. His massive wages, which imo are wasted (amongst others), are having an impact on our ability to sign improvements or keep our better players. Edit, to answer your question, yes, I commented on the match day thread without a mention.

I certainly wouldn’t have committed to an 18 month loan deal for a player that we were likely only going to need for a couple of months. Especially in our current financial situation. We’ll be paying a fair old chunk of his wages, I’ve no doubt about that.

The more these sort of comments are made, I wonder if MON was aware of the precarious financial situation here - when he joined us I believe he was confident that he would keep us up and have a good chance of a top 6 position by the end of next season
Frustration showing that the situation is in fact quite different
I can see Collins moving on regardless, Powell a very important part of any progress imo

Looks like we're walking a tightrope. One foot slightly wrong and we get a 6/12 point deduction, and there's nowt we can do about it without selling our better players. One more year of those 'legacy contracts' will stifle pretty much everything unless we can unload them. Bauer is the exception. His 'legacy contract' has a few more years to run yet. What a bloody mess. OS.
