The Fletcher thread got me thinking of this. The idea is very good players who were underwhelming or at least a bit run-of-the-mill (or just plain crap) for us.
Southall
Glen Johnson Bould Woodgate Dorigo
Mark Walters Fletcher JOM Patrik Berger
Gudjohnsen Owen
Dynamite team with them all at their peak! Any improvements?

That front two in their peak would have been a deadly strikeforce.

Geoff Hurst?
Don’t know if he’d be in front of those two though... Or if he was ‘run of the mill’ in his time at Stoke.

By the time Steve Bould left he definitely wasn't underwhelming or run of the mill.

Mark Walters is before my time but I reckon Euro 96 Hoekstra would have been even better than our a-bit-broken genius.
From my eras Shay Given would probably make the subs bench, as would Wilson Palacios and Lee Hendrie (his peak was very short but he was really good when he first emerged).

John Gidman at his peak was brilliant.

I didn’t consider Hendrie or Hooky because they were really good for Stoke. Palacios is a good shout, I was so excited when he signed 😕

By the time Steve Bould left he definitely wasn't underwhelming or run of the mill. Yeah I was stretching it a bit with Bould, just going off the oft-maligned full back appearances

Arguably the best 2 ever England goalkeepers Edit. That will teach me to read all the question first 🤣

Dave Watson was past his peak (and yet still very good).

Dom Matteo maybe? Toss up between him and Fletcher though. Hadn’t thought of him but I’d say he’s well behind Fletcher. Also behind JOM, Palacios and arguably Diao for CM

Fletcher was a key part of Man Yoo’s success under Fergie and saw Neville said he’s the most underrated player he’s ever played with.
Fergie loved him, nearly 250 league games for Man Yoo, 340 odd games total, 6 league title and 1 Champions League.
Struggling to think if we have had anyone with more and better medals? Maybe Bojan?

Sam Vokes Tom Ince Benik Afobe
All have a decent past but were utterly shit for Stoke.
Although not in the same league as the ones mentioned above.

He certainly wouldn't get in the side ahead of Owen and Eidur, but going off his Sunderland and Derby form, Marco Gabbiadini

Ince could come in for Walters but that’s pretty underwhelming in itself compared to the rest of the team...
