Was safari park by the gasometer? The things I remember about Longton are below, in no particular order; The old bus station - smokey and dingy, kinda like 'on the buses' Jollees above it Under the arches Heathcote street school - bulldozered for the a50. Chancery grill The old co-op furniture shop. The strange man who sold toys in longton market - he looked like fred Harris The Waterloo pub - the smokiest pub I ever walked in to. The shops above the shops in the middle of the precinct. The old post office Liptons - where iceland now resides Cee n' cee - some strange supermarket which then became Jomens. Steeles arcade - lost many a quid in there. Burgess cake shop - next to barclays bank And my favourite thing as a kid, the old town centre map by the midland bank that used to light up various places when you pressed the buttons. It always fascinated me as a kid. I often wonder where it went. As I recall it was a big yellow contraption. I went to Heathcote Road School , the infants and then the juniors .....Mrs Ridgeway my first teacher I salute you ....I know I was hard work !

Nobody ever mentions Wedgies Cafe ( probably because nobody is old enough to remember it ) ...opposite Longton Market , before Bennett Precinct was built ....their pies were marvelous ...better than Wrights I would say ...and that is almost blasphemy !

Despite living only a few miles away in sunny Stoke, I very rarely visit Longton. There must be a reason. Lack of education ?

Safari Park is between the gasometer and Weston Coyney (much closer to Weston Coyney) I think. Longton bus station always reminded me of 'On the Buses' as well

I attended Grafton Road infants/ juniors and every year there was a Christmas carol service in St. John's church(the one by the railway bridge), we used to have to walk through the cemetery to get from the school to the church, that walk always gave me the willies and to this day I still don't like walking through cemeteries

Sadly all gone now along with Woodhouse and no doubt Edensor. I remember St John's Church, it always looked huge, but I don't remember it being knocked down or why it was knocked down. The cemetery was really creepy and the only bit left was that huge headstone we called the crypt.

I remember whe I came out of the Navy, my 1st job on civvy st was at Sampson Bridgewoods, later called Churchil, by the train line near Aynsleys, cant remember the name of the boozer across the road, we always went there on a Fri. All gone now, now houses. I remember the place so well, seeing the slip house managers desk under 3 foot of slip because he'd forgotten ( pissed ) to turn off the pumps before his lunch ( vodka)...Some great mates there and very fond memories, apart from the fact that's where I met my wife...

It looks ramshackle from the outside now but still does good trade as they have gone done the real ale route. They have little beer festivals from time to time. It still reminds me of the 1970s when I go in though
