Who was in charge of the transfers when we signed Shawcross, Whelan and Fuller? Just over £2 million for all 3 of them was phenomenal business. I know there’s been inflation since but it really puts the likes of £9 million on Vokes into perspective. The Shawcross and Huth partnership was a real joy to watch and our decline started when Huth left because we never properly replaced him. Ryan is a bonafide club legend for me and it’s a shame he’s been so hampered by injuries in the latter stages of his career. Just ignoring the 3 seasons we finished 9th then? the first of which Huth played 12 games, the second 1 game and the third 0. We also had our best defensive season in the Prem with Shawcross & Wollscheid as the main centre back partnership. So to say Huth leaving was the start of the decline is just not true. There’s not a chance that Wollscheid was a better defender than Huth despite what the results said. I’d take Ryan and Huth as a partnership over Ryan and Wollscheid any day of the week.

The bad thing of this transfer is that we don’t get to give him the send off he thoroughly deserves. The lad has been simply outstanding for us. From that young lanky kid that joined on loan, to the outstanding leader and captain he has become. I really hope one day we get chance to thank him in the way he deserves

I’m the same age as Ryan and so have always felt an affinity with him and enjoyed the fact he stayed with us - particularly in the early Premier League years where it seemed a move to a bigger club was on the cards. Many great memories; the late winner against Boro in our first season up, the seemingly impossible goal line clearance against Man City and his part in the magical 5-0 FA Cup semi-final spring to mind for me.
It’s a shame to see him go at a time when they are no fans and we’ve been reduced to a pretty mediocre Championship side - but his departure is also a reminder of the similar position we were in when he first arrived and what a key part he played in some real golden years for the club.

A giant on the pitch, in more ways than one, during his first ten years with us. A club legend and one of Stoke's best ever signings.
Would always come back to a great welcome.

Do all his badges in a lovely sunny climate. Back to manage Burton for 6 months and then onto the meat and drink as he takes TMP back to the Prem.

I saw something on Twitter and it was true. When you refer to a player simply by his first name and everyone knows who you mean, you are a legend. Ryan, Rory and Ric...3 legends from recent times but Ryan is the main man of the 3. I still maintain that far too many people, Stoke fans and others, simply don't realise just how good Ryan was at his very best. How does that work with Jese Without Ricardo we would never have reached the premier league, those three are probably the most important players of the last 15 years and Delap was very underrated as a midfielder too.

I'm going to write some things and I don't think that any of them are exagerrated or hyperbole.
No signing has had a bigger long term impact on the club since Sir Stan signed for the second time.
He led the two finest Stoke sides of the past 50 years - 2010/11 and 2014/15 - as captain and best player.
He epitomised everything about Stoke in our golden decade.
He remains the only Stoke player to lead a team out in an FA Cup Final.
He is the only Stoke player to captain the team to victory in Europe.
He was consistently one of the very best defenders in England for most of his time with us.
I have no doubt that, when all is taken into account, he is the single best and most important player to play for the club in the last 40 years.
The day that he finalises the move to Miami is the day that the final flicker of our club's golden decade dies out. I'm glad he's getting one last hurrah in sunnier climes rather than having his career fade away, but it will be a very sad day for the club when he goes.

In the council meeting minutes thread Ange posted and said that the club had gone along the lines of 'he's still a Stoke player at the moment' and they didn't want to speculate - so the minutes didn't really reflect what was said. As I say it was in the recent supporters council meeting thread. Which is an astonishing admission in itself. The minutes don’t reflect what was actually said. What’s that about?

A simply outstanding player and human being who will rightly take his place as one of our greatest ever players and for me he starts in our best ever team alongside Neil Franklin who my late father always told me was the best defender to ever play the game.
