I think Smith will play right back, not sure it is the right game for Verlinden, Spurs will be big and strong whatever team they play, might be men against boys in certain positions, that said I expect us to raise our game and give them a tough game. we simply can not start Vokes, it immediately let's teams defend 20 yards further up the pitch from the off. If Cardiff can push up 20 yards, Spurs will push up 30-40 yards!

We can't start Vokes - but who else is there? Fletcher needs a break if we want him fit for Cov. And Brown is being overworked too. Fox could do with a rest as well - but, again, who else is there? Mikel unavailable and Cousins could really do with a break. So not many options in midfield beyond Tymon and Thompson and no destroyer in there?
You'd like to go in full strength, but it might be one step too far for some of them in a 10 games in 30 days spell
If we're going second string:
Lonergan/Blondy Smith Shawcross Batth ?? Thompson Tymon Ince TOB Verlinden ??

That team scares me in all honesty. We are still a left back light aren't we?.

Lonergan/Blondy Batth Shawcross Lindsay Smith Thompson Tymon McClean Ince Vokes Verlinden
Back 3 maybe?
(I've just remembered that Liam Lindsay exists)
Don't want to wave the white flag when we submit the team sheet - but just trying to think who'll he be keen to give a break to before Boxing Day?

EFL Cup Winners Odds - Bet365
Man City 15/8 Tottenham 15/4 Man Utd 11/2 Arsenal 6 Everton 8 Newcastle 16 Brentford 33 Stoke 75
Where is the 'value' in that lot? I'd say Man Utd at 11/2.

A marvellous match, my gut tells me. Can Tottenham do it on a hopefully, windy, rainy, freezing, miserable night in Stoke? 4-5-1 for mine: Goalie: Blondy: Backline: Souttar, Smith, Collins, Fox; Mids: Baath, Shawcross, McLean, Tymon, Cousins. Centre forward: Brown. Subs: Bursik, Fletcher, Oakley-Booth, Thompson, Verlinden, Sparrow, Porter, Forrester. I hope we park the bus, man-mark Son and Kane, and then flood the Spurs box with high balls for our big boys to score. Route One all the way.

Assume 5 at the back as normal against strong teams. Give a few people a game, rest key players like Fletcher and Powell, try out Verlinden and give Collins and Souttar experience against a top team. Give Tymon and Brown half an hour at the end
Lonergan Smith Souttar Shawcross Collins McClean TOB Thompson Verlinden Vokes Ince

We can't start Vokes - but who else is there? PowellMaybe in other games - but think MON has basically said Powell won't be playing in this one and the priority is making sure he's fit for Boxing Day.

Maybe in other games - but think MON has basically said Powell won't be playing in this one and the priority is making sure he's fit for Boxing Day. Well if that's the case he's either going to give TOB a run out against his old club and stick to 4231 or he goes 433 with a flat 3 midfield of Cousins Thompson and Tymon. This is presuming he's not going 3 at the back.

I’d go 442 with wingers and two strikers
Lonergan
Smith Batth Shawcross Fox
McLean Cousins Thompson Verlinden
Brown Vokes
Flat back 4, with two sitters and both wingers under instructions to pump crosses into the box from all angles to Sam Plank with Brown using his pace to chase long balls in behind their defence.

Baath and Ryan both out and out stoppers, though, aren't they? So if we're playing one (and Ryan might be the closer to fully fit of the two), maybe best playing alongside a Collins or or a Lindsay for a bit more mobility.

Read the bleedin posts chaps, Lonergan is ill and Bursick is cup tied so it's Blondy or any bugger in goal, 0-6 to the Spuds.

Just about any other time I'd be really looking forward to this game. Right now it's a bloody inconvenience and I just hope we come through unscathed injury wise. For me the 3 league games being played on Boxing Day, the 29th and then Jan 2nd are way more important. Relentless schedule with big games thrown in against Spurs and Leicester too. Going to stretch us to the absolute limit this
