I guess Davies will be No1. But who should be our No2? It will be harsh on Bursik to be third choice again after doing so well.

I assume Davo will be first choice. But it'd be hard to oppose Bursy. He hasn't done that much wrong in the last three games.

There’s no reason to drop Bursik.

It’s amazing we’ve gone from having no decent keepers to 3 perfectly competent keepers, makes me wonder have things might have turned out had Butland been dropped when his for started to dip years ago. I imagine whoever is fit first out of Davies and Gunn will keep the gloves. However I’m a believer that if a keeper is doing well then they should stay until such time form dips. So for me at the moment Bursik should keep the gloves when all 3 are back until a change is necessary.

Well if Bursik loses his place in the coming weeks then he should be sent straight back to Doncaster as there's no benefit him sitting on the bench and not playing.

Davies No.1 Gunn No.2 Bursik No.3 [out on loan]

I'm assuming Davies will be the number one. But thinking about it, none of our keepers have had a prolonged spell of success; enough to conclude that they're definitely the real deal.
I wouldn't begrudge any of them getting their chance though, and I'm just glad we've got options at last.
I reckon part of the reason for Butland's decline, and our failures in recent years, was there being no one seriously pushing him for the number one jersey.
I used to stare at him and think "how hard would it be, to just come out and claim a few crosses?" But he either didn't seem motivated, or even aware that that was missing from his game.
Then when Davies finally got his chance, it was like he'd been studying Butland's deficiency, and he instantly knew that coming for crosses was what was needed.
If we still just had the one genuine keeper in contention for the No.1 jersey, I believe we'd still be scrapping around in the lower regions of the table now.
Say what you like about traffic cone (I actually typed Triffic Tone, but thank you autocorrect for an amusing amendment!)... ...but in his day, he knew the value of 3 good stoppers.
Such as the year when we had Sorensen, Begovic and Simonsen on the books at the same time.
That seems like overkill at the time, but I guess we are seeing the benefit of having 3 good goalies clearly now.
And with kiddies too; who all have age on their side. Any one of them could become a really good player!
I guess the next big question for us therefore is not so much which one of them to pick in the short term, but rather what to do when Gunn's loan expires.
And happily, we should be negotiaing our next move then from a position of relative strength, not desperation! :-)

If Bursik progresses and no reason to suggest he won't, he is very similar to Pickford and we know what fee he went for. Suddenly from no saleable assets, we have Campbell, Bursik, Souttar and Collins..

Well if Bursik loses his place in the coming weeks then he should be sent straight back to Doncaster as there's no benefit him sitting on the bench and not playing. Makes sense to do that. It's sensible to keep 3 goalies around the place: 2 fighting for the jersey and a third who's happy to pick up a wage and provide emergency back-up. Once Davies and Gunn are back, I'd give Maenpaa an 18 month contract and get Bursik out on loan again to League One. Next season, Davies and Bursik are the two fighting for the shirt, and Maenpaa is here just in case. Meanwhile, the two other young keepers are out on loan somewhere.

Bursik will be number one or loaned out surely? It would be mad to have him not playing every week.

What is the situation with the Gunn loan may we even consider sending him back in January? Saves on wages and loan fees

Pretty sure a few weeks ago MON said, as it stood, it was looking like Davies would be fit about 2 weeks before Gunn.
Davies was said to be 4-8 weeks when he got injured at the end of October Gunn was said to be 6 weeks in mid-November
Interesting call if it's Davies who's back first some time in the next fortnight. The man in possession is starting to look the part. Do you stick with him or go with someone who hasn't played a game in a couple of months?
Tough call. Glad I'm not the one making it. Bursik will feel he's doing everything asked of him and will be in a different mental place than before he was thrown in at the deep end and was able to swim.
The question would be if Donny would have him back and install as him as their No.1 in January? Or, if not, could we find him a home where he'd be No.1 somewhere else at that level?
You'd think it'd be tough for a keeper to swan in somewhere in January and take over as first choice

Also, am I right in thinking that unless Davies is fit, it'll be Lonergan who's got to play against Spurs in the League Cup due to Bursik being cup-tied? What happens if he has a worldy in that game?

Whoever is our No3 gets no game time, whether you are a keeper or outfield player, maybe something like the old Central League needs to be brought back to give all the players some game time.

Based purely on talent and likely future transfer fees, Bursik and Gunn, I expect, are much higher rated players with a much bigger talent than Davies. I was really impressed with Gunn and Bursik is doing great. Based on what I've seen from all 3, I'd expect to see Gunn emerge as no1. He's the one more likely to win us a game courtesy of an unbelievable save from what I've seen. Davies is just steady away which is exactly what was needed after the troubles Butland was having.

Stick with Bursik, Davies as number 2 until Joe deserves to be dropped.
All the bitching when we signed Gunn about what MON WOULD do and how it'd be wrong to drop Davies didn't turn out to be true.

Gunn will be on 40k-a-week (and has about 3 more yrs on that deal too) although presumably we're only paying a chunk of that. But what we'd have to pay next year or if we wanted to make it permanent, who knows? It's an interesting one - can't remember being in a position where you could make a valid case for any one of three keepers being our No.1. A poll asking who people expect to be our first choice on opening day next year may be interesting! The problem is there's absolutely nothing in it for Gunn, at 24, or 20yo Bursik to be our No.2 at any point in the medium-term. They need games and lots of them And in the Percy interview article, it again mentioned that "club insiders" are predicting big things for Blondy too.

And in fairness, if it kept Vokes off the pitch I'd be happy with with of the 3 up there.

Was it mentioned both Gunn and Davies are now expected back in mid-late Jan? (which is longer than the original diagnosis in both cases I think)
Really interesting what we'll do then though.
Probably gives us little time to loan Bursik back out to Doncaster (who are doing very well in his absence anyway) There may be some way they could get an emergency loan done as they are down to the bare bones with keepers - but how could you reasonably leave him out of our XI anyway if he keeps playing as he is?
Wonder if there's a break clause in Gunn's loan to send him back?

If Bursik continues playing like he has been it would be a crime to drop him, it’s not a position you want to be changing regularly, if he is in form he should keep the gloves.
For me Gunn is a better keeper than Davies but he is unlikely to be here next season so I’d rather we play Bursik and Davies unless we really think Gunn can be the difference and result in us getting promoted. I’m doubtful though as I think our concerns are at the other end of the pitch, happy with either of these three in goal, it’s the lack of goals at the other end of the pitch that may cost us a playoff place.
