hughes made us first club in pl history to lose to the same team by 4 goals or more in four consecutive meetings.
never forget what hughes do to us. couldnt play defence, no 4-4-2, wasted money, and sent us down.
never liked him.

Hughes was the third best manager we’ve had this century.

Bojan, Arnautovic, Shaquiri. Sure it went Pete Tong at the end but what a journey.

He didn't actually send us down though did he,we weren't in the bottom 3 when he left, he probably would of got us a couple of wins we needed to stay up.and we played some of the best football I've ever seen played watching stoke

I think he would have got the points to just about save us. Coates pulled the trigger at totally the wrong time as it was criminal not having a decent manager lined up to replace him.

Best football I've watched was produced under Hughes.
A crap end but way more to do with the board not sacking him when they should.

And what exactly was the reward for three ninth places ? We didn’t receive any silverware or trips into Europe ! Hughes legacy is still being felt by the club, he’s left us hamstrung by his disastrous transfer policies not just on incoming transfers but also on outgoing players. The three players that you mentioned, just what financial windfall did Stoke receive when these players left us ? Shaquiri left for the same price that we paid out for him, Arnautovic went for a tidy profit but nowhere near his true value, and remember at what cost did his inspirational display for West Ham against Stoke have on our battle against relegation ? Bojan left for nothing but our best wishes and thoughts of what might have been, these three were on good wages which were probably increased during their time with us, and we would probably be contributing to Bojans wages during his excursions around Europe, Stokealona was a dream that’s turned into nightmare.

Hughes gave the majority of Stoke fans the best football they have ever seen us play, signed some of the best players we have ever had, gave us some of the best score lines we had ever seen against top teams, and turned Stoke into a team that on their day could beat anybody.

That’s just pure speculation. Fans were baying for his removal and, after the Coventry debacle, Coates had really no choice as our form was diabolical and relegation stared us in the face. IMO Hughes had lost interest and it showed. Fans thought we had several manager options lined up but Flores and Rowett who both used our interest in them to better their own contracts and Martin O’Neil just didn’t fancy the job and who can blame him with the shithousery players we had.

I’ve said it on numerous occasions I cannot forgive Hughes for the state he left the club in and yet I agree he gave us some of the best footy for years.Sadly the first bit outweighs the football but each to their own

I always think of Hughes as the poor mans Harry Redknapp he brings you glory and leaves you in big mess, however some of the football against premiership elite was fabulous.

I always said at the time he should have been removed immediately providing we had a decent replacement waiting in the wings.
But let's be honest if we'd kept him instead of appointing Lambert we couldn't have done any worse, maybe just maybe we'd have scraped those extra couple of wins but we'll never know.....

I never understand the ‘finishing ninth isn’t a trophy so it’s valueless’ argument. For a team like us it was an excellent achievement and the journey was an awful lot of fun. Dismiss it if you want but you have to dismiss the fine football and performances the team produced. Smashing Liverpool and Spurs and Villa. Finally beating Man United and Chelsea. A penalty shootout from Wembley. They’re great memories and that on some level is what football is about. Yeah they didn’t do it consistently. Few teams outside the top clubs do.

I don’t think that’s quite true. The ‘very decent squad’ he inherited had one three times in five months and were reportedly dispirited and divided, and he did better with it than his predecessor ever did. He was backed eventually, and with disastrous consequences, but in his first two (and best) seasons, we were among the lowest spenders and had one of the lower wage bills in the Premier League.

I enjoyed Stoke under Hughes much more than I did under Pulis or anyone else. Pity it didnt last but these were the best times I think Stoke with have for a long long time. Some of the football was unbelievable - that win against Liverpool was the pinnacle. It will never happen again. I remember telling my son after that game, as we waited for players to appear a good hour after the match finished, that we had reached the highest point we possibly could - and it was downhill from here - how true it was. I just never realised just how quickly we would fall. But Hughes did give a glow to Stoke that nobody else has done since Tony Waddington.

It’s fortunate that we have custodians who have deep pockets because those memories didn’t come cheap, we might not have been big spenders in Hughes first two seasons but we paid big wages on generous terms. When the purse strings were loosened the decline in fortunes began. Ironically a club of similar stature to ourselves with a Hughes outcast at the heart of its defence managed to consistently pull off results and were crowned champions. Without our owners financial muscle, Hughes legacy could have quite possibly seen the end of Stoke City, we are constantly restricted by FFP as a result of a disastrous recruitment policy e.g purchasing players at ridiculous prices, on long term contracts and with no resale value !

He lost the plot but that doesn’t mean the good times weren’t good. He should’ve been removed at the end of his penultimate season, the same way Pulis was moved on when the time was right. The owners are culpable there.

It seems that Arnie was absolutely right when he said he wanted to leave Stoke because of a lack of ambition (even though he was nothing more than a mercenary) if fans are content with looking back at three ninth places as though we had reached our ceiling god help us, even Burnley obtained a higher finish ! We all look back at games and results with a sense of disbelief that a Stoke side could actually play and entertain to such high standards, but those games were one offs, they weren’t consecutive wins in one season, they were spread over two and a bit seasons. I am more excited about what could be happening now, a side containing homegrown players, Young raw talent coming to the club because of ambition and not the money and a manager who is galvanising the club, team and supporters.

Hughes did OK and signed some class players until the latter stages when he signed some tripe. His tenacity in signing Berahino accentuated it and it all started to unravel compounded by the appointments of Rowett (arguably didnt have long enough) and Jones who made it worse of course. We are still suffering from this period of acquisition and do we really know what influence Cartwright had?
