Funny how there's basically no club gear on the people in the crowd. There must be 150+ people in those two close-up photos and there's maybe 2 red scarves and nothing else. . To be fair the club shop used to stock 2 jumpers and a club crest key ring in them days. Also the club shop was the front room of a terraced house.😂

Just a quick question. Does anyone know what the official capacity of each end was at the old ground? I’m talking after the new Stoke end stand was built and pre Hillsborough. It is relevant to this thread as I’ll explain later.

Boothen End... during 1989's capacity was,I think 13000 then 11000 then 9000 at the end Ish anyway

I think I’m right in saying the 31,979 that attended the FA cup game against Liverpool in 1988 was the biggest gate we saw at the old Victoria Ground after the new Stoke end stand was built, and before the boxes were put into the Butler street stand. I don’t know the exact capacity, but my guess would be broken down by stand as follows: Boothen End: 12,000 Boothen Stand/Paddock: 6000 Stoke End Stand/Paddock: 7,000 Butler Street Stand/Paddock: 7,000

Memory may be playing me up but I think I recall the Boothen being restricted to 11,000 (from its 16,000 capacity ten years previously) and that would tie in with 4,000 standing in the Stoke End which did used to cram them in

That Liverpool match was my first game on the Boothen (as a 10 year old). What a match, a Hudson and Chamberlian masterclass. Dalglish never got a sniff and was hooked if memory serves...souness not a happy bunny. They won the treble that year aswell. Remember getting covered in coffee during the celebrations of Russell's goal. Great photos and great memories!

Also the club shop was the front room of a terraced house.😂 I remember how excited I was when the big club shop opened at the Vic. To my eager kid's eyes it was like a proper superstore, all the racks of shiny replica shirts and stacks of other paraphernalia... I must have spent about an hour trying to decide which of the six or eight pristine scarves I liked best to spend my Crimbo money on. I loved going in there, I used to walk down there not even on matchdays just to marvel at it all. Course today there'd be an 18-page thread on here about how shit it is

Seem to recall there were 3 shops in the late 80s. The souvenir shop in the end terrace opposite the main entrance, the promotions shop also in an end terrace at the end of Lime St and then a little programme shop in a hut close to the police box at the Boothen stand/Stoke end corner. Not sure what you could buy in the promotions shop other than that match days programme

The Top Cat Stoke on Tour shirt I remember

I’ve said on another thread the 1980s is the least documented of Stoke’s recent history. It’d be great to get it into a book at least for historical reasons. I’d say Bill Asprey and Barry Siddall would come out of it a lot better. Interestingly, Wolves late 80’s revival was in part due to a partnership with ASDA. We declined as a team after Stoke council rejected a similar arrangement for Stoke in 1985.

We declined as a team after Stoke council rejected a similar arrangement for Stoke in 1985. Millwalls promotion to Division 1 in 1988 was seen as a surprise to most but that was funded by a substantial cash injection from ASDA. They agreed to purchase land by the Old Den but pulled out at the last minute. Millwall took them to court and walked away with a settlement close to £1 million. They invested that money on the squad, signing the likes of Tony Cascarino, and were promoted within a year.

Anyway with these latest photos of Stoke v Liverpool that are on from 1984 I’d love to see one or two showing the Boothen End. Because all the other stands look full to me, yet the official attendance was only 24,000 and a few 🤣

There were lots of occasions (Barnsley in the FA Cup being one) where, under instruction from the police, he was told in no uncertain terms to open his turnstile up and let fans flock in when there were disturbances going on outside. Hundreds of Barnsley fans got into the Butler Street paddock that day for free and that’s just one of many examples.

Random looking for other non related photos on the Flickr website, and fair kudos indeed to Jim Wall who posted a load of pics from Stoke V Wolves 1984. As he says in the info found lurking in a box of negatives. I dont wish to steal his thunder or suchlike but they are absolute belters in quality from the game that we won 4-0 ...and yes a little bit of old Stokie aggro on one! Thanks for putting those up. What a game that was. I was only 11 at the time, but every time I see pics or videos of the Vic at that time it just brings back how magical it felt whenever I walked in there. Dare I say but I loved the pinstripe kit too.

I used to envy Man U Celtic etc who had fantastic shops and better stuff for sale outside the grounds. I found a Stoke track suit top in a shop in Ireland , think had Creda sponsor on. Davy Crockett hats were an odd choice to stock at one point

Couldn't see a thing to be fair That was in August 1989. There was only two stands open. The Wolves fans liked us so much they decided to throw all their money towards us. My dad beckoned them to throw more loose change as he was actually doing quite well. Hairy inside and out that day. Shane Westley broke Ian Scott’s leg, and I also remember the appearance of DJ Bear one of the first football mascots. DJ’s thoughts on being called a ‘Twat’ by an irate Stokie are not known. I think it was that day the season started to unravel.

But even the most miserable pessimist couldn't have predicted the calamity that unfolded.
