As someone in his mid-50s, the Macari era was the first time in a long while that I felt we regained our mojo after some very difficult Asprey-Mills-Barker-Jordan years, when we occasionally flirted with success, but were rarely able to sustain for any reasonable period of time. Admittedly at a lower level, Lou was able to assemble a “team” in its truest sense of the word consisting of average footballers who compensated any technical shortcomings with steely attributes complimented by a star forward in the name of Mark Stein. In many respects, there were several parallels (replace Stein with Fuller) with the team moulded by Pulis 15 years later which was at a higher level, but financed by the Coates coffers which had swelled in the intervening years. Lou tainted his reputation in many Stokies’ minds by leaving us for Celtic but that was such a career and salary hike, and to a club which was in his home town, back in the days when he was earning a relative pittance compared to today’s standards that I would never hold that against him. The fact that he has maintained his home in the area after all these years shows the close bond that he must feel to our city. I am only surprised that his charitable endeavours toward our city have not gained greater recognition both within our club and in our local community. A true Stoke hero if ever there was one. This should be filmed as the equivalent of “Moneyball”

One simple honour the club could offer him is a vice president at the club he deserves it for his work in the city and also at the club

Starting to get some amazing coverage isn't he?
Seems like all of a sudden that his project has captured the attention of the wider world.

My greatest memories as a Stokie under this great bloke! Away days were immense. Bar having Pesch sold from under him I'm convinced he would have got us promoted.

The guy is so unassuming amazing. The impact he had and still has to this day is nothing short remarkable. I don’t think we will ever see a manager, come into our club and have the impact he did, ever again. A lot of it was circumstances relating to where we were at the time, however, the love I have for our team, was magnified by what Lou gave us.
He needs a stand naming after him. The boothen preferably. The journey he gave us was like having Barnsley away for 3 years. How many late goals did we score when he was in charge. I feel sorry for my lad, he isn’t old enough to remember the good times in the prem, he only remembers relegation, then rowet then Jones, Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday are his biggest highlights so far.
Thank you Lou

Great article and interview with him just on Central news, real top bloke. The 92/3 season is still my best time ever as a stoke city fan. Just seen it myself now it's on the main news. What a fantastic man. The city should do something for Lou and so should our club. He should also be knighted. What a man.

His time with us was fantastic. As others have said, those awaydays were terrific.
His community work is exemplary.
Had a look at his stats earlier, and he came through a crop of Celtic reserves called the Quality Street Gang. I had never heard of them, but aside from Lou, it included Danny McGrain, David Hay and Kenny Dalglish.

What an absolute hero he is.
So baffling that we live in a country where homelessness is on the rise year after year. It's good to see that the Government pledged additional funding to this in December - reversing the trend since 2010 should be one of their top priorities.
We shouldn't need people like Lou to do this amazing work but thank god we have.

So lucky to have had him as a manager when the club was on its knees. He picked us up and made us proud again. Now he's doing the same with the less fortunate. What an excellent human being he is
