The Nations League format of groups of 3 was excellent, less matches and all competitive with sides seeing the value of a win. Now with groups of four (the change was made because Germany had been relegated,UEFA decided that wasn't acceptable) we see dead rubber games like this one and other games where sides play for a draw
Absolute bobbins
Worked really well before, now you get this stale rubbish

If the players sport a similar attitude it could be a historic night.
It will be anyway because the Iceland boss is retiring, and while the players haven't said they will too, many of them are in their mid 30s and can no longer be expected to take part in the next epic saga, which consists of a starting all over, where Iceland for once haven't qualified for one or the other tournament.
With a rather small nucleus to choose from, the players have played together since they were teenagers. They have a very special bond, which has seen them produce results that just don't make sense, but they happened anyway.
And now they are, nearly all, coming to the end of the line. Everton's Sigurdsson should carry on a while longer, as will Bjarnisson. But the rest of them will want to go out with a roar, so I'm predicting the biggest score against England since Hungary scored 6 at Wembley.
HU!

Watched that documentry about the 66 World Cup last night - very uplifting and great insight into the players, fans and attitudes prevalent at the time - contrast that with the overrated hyped-up shower of sh1t we have now and the bleating of the circus that surrounds football generally and weep....

Id be happier if international football was just the World Cup the Euros and resurrect the Home Internationals Plus maybe two friendlies a year. Far too much international football now most of it boring and pointless I hate these international breaks

He's been amazing in Germany Not quite the same standard as here but not far off Good in Champions League too Only shown glimpses for England though. Seems to lack confidence, that happens a lot with young England players. Southgate is backing him though so it should come. If he moves to England everyone will rave about him. Potential world class but not there yet

You do realise that there are probably 200 national teams who would all like to go the Worlds, doncha??? That way you will have multiplied the number of internationals by a huge number.

The first edition was really fun. Each game mattered, and the margins were slim. It went down to the last games. Germany relegated. Croatia relegated. Plenty of schadenfreude. D was the most interesting because it guaranteed that a minnow would be at Euros, so it really meant a lot to all the minnow country players. It's not fun this time. There's nothing on the line. It would have been better to revert to the old format and hold the competition every 4 years so there are always Euro spots for grabs. In addition, they should give the tournament winner an automatic Euro spot so they can sit out the slog of qualification.

Far too much international football now most of it boring and pointless I hate these international breaks I am old enough to remember the home internationals and with the exception of the very occasional game v Scotland they were rubbish. Likewise the expansion of the World Cup means the group stages are boring. My interest in international football waned many years ago.

If we start the game with 3 cbs and 2 plodders in midfield again I won't bother. Southgate needs to find his balls and realise we've got players who can beat Iceland comfortably without setting up so defensively.

They were extremely lame, even a lot of England v Scotland games were poor. But when things don't happen for long enough they get better, its like players, they seem to get better the longer they don't play as well.

Southgate needs to find his balls and realise we've got players who can beat Iceland comfortably without setting up so defensively. You're forgetting Iceland. They have a system and a code of ethics for which every man will die to save his brother. Every player adheres to this system without questioning why. It's gotten them far, not least in games vs England. Beating Iceland comfortably is quite unlikely. England on the other hand have no such thing, and the whole concept would be deemed laughable, among players, staff, and fans. Yet it works, Belgium, in a sense, did an Iceland Sunday. It frustrated England and they forgot how to play comfortably.

They have a "way of playing" because their talent pool is limited, we have players like Foden sat on their arse doing nothing because we have a manager who is scared, there's a difference.

I’d say Gareth is out of his depth managing what is Shirley one of the most talented England squads of all time. We need to be more dynamic from here.

I’d say Gareth is out of his depth managing what is Shirley one of the most talented England squads of all time. We need to be more dynamic from here. That's a big exaggeration. With regards to our attackers - yeah fair enough, they are exceptionally good. But our options in goal and defence are really poor. This is what Southgate is having to balance at the moment (admittedly, not too convincingly at the moment).
