I’d still go 4231 because I think the formation we played tonight is too negative for a home game. But within the realms of that formation this is what I would pick. Davies Smith Collins Souttar Indi Tymon Mikel Clucas Powell Campbell Fletcher Easily the best team available

A comment I’ve just posted on Twitter in respect of Souttar and Collins
”I’m hesitant.
Not about the potential for both, it’s the expectations!!! If tomorrow both became our Smith/Bloor, Overson/Cranson or Shawcross/Huff it would be fantastic.
Trust in MON to manage their careers.”

Can Mikel manage 3 games/week? We know if we play Campbell and Fletcher they'll probably both need to be subbed at some point.
If we play more openly like today (3-4-3 or switch to 4-2-3-1) you gotta think we'd need a replacement to sit in front of defence. Maybe Thompson could be worth a try there?

Rested tonight were Chester, Batth, Fox, McClean, Clucas and Gregory, whilst Fletcher, TOB and Smith only had sub outings. If MON is true to his current thinking on rotation, most of those will play on Sunday, ahead of the international break. I am not saying I agree, but he may well go with something like: Davies Chester Batth Fox Smith TOB Thompson Clucas McClean Gregory Fletcher I'd go for what I think may be our best team right now (fairly close to tonight), certainly at home where the onus is on us to take the game to them: Davies Collins Souttar Bruno Smith Mikel Clucas Tymon Powell Fletcher Campbell I agree with all of that. That’s the team MON will pick, maybe one change in the midfield. And 100% agree on the team you would pick. Fletcher and Campbell clicking will get us goals.

Davies Smith Collins Souttar Indi Tymon Mikel Clucas Powell Campbell Fletcher Easily the best team available I’d go with that too; although I really don’t like three at the back. I have a marginal preference for Brown because he has a bit more to offer than Campbell, who’s a good finisher and does have pace/speed. However, he is really lacking in the skill department. His only move is to try to push it past the defender and run.

Think we need to find opportunities to showcase some of our unwanted, not the bombsquad players obviously. But players like Ince, Edwards, Lindsay and possibly Cousins.
Its hard now to find a spot for Lindsay and Cousins without upsetting our well balanced side but I feel there is scope to just about fit in Ince and Edwards and get some interest going.
I'd like to see Ince on the left wing again like he played in one game pre season.

We just need to ensure we win and don’t do another Bristol. Massive improvement being made under MON but we need to be more consistent and be able to break down teams when they come to defend. I’d still go with Powell ahead of TOB but it’s a very close call.
Davies
Collins Soutter Indi
Smith Obi Clucas Tymon
Powell
Fletcher Campbell

We need to find a way to win this one.
If we do we have 2 wins and a draw and a defeat from 4 league games and if you put that together with zipping through 4 rounds of the League Cup beating Prem opposition on 2 occasions that's a momentum building start to the season.
Draw or lose and focus will turn to the fact we only have 4 or 5 points from a possible 12 in 4 League games and we will already be staring up the table at the front runners.
Do it Stoke!

I know McClean was our player of the season and all that, but there’s no way I’d play him LWB.
If we are looking to attack then Tymon, for more defensive then Fox
Team for me is
Davies Collins...Souttar....Chester Brown..TOB..Powell...Mikel...Tymon Campbell....Fletcher
Possibly Bruno for Chester

Fox is a solid left back or cover for Bruno.

Will Mikel be fit enough to start again on Sunday? You’d have to think not.

Will Mikel be fit enough to start again on Sunday? You’d have to think not. I think part of the reason for the slightly defensive set up so far is because Mikel is still getting up to speed. I don't think he'd have played him last night if he wouldn't be okay for Sunday and that when he is 100% O'Neill will be more confident in playing a more expansive way......

Think the Birmingham selection will be influenced more by who played against Villa than what our 'best' XI is.
Expect he'll go 5-3-2 again, probably with McClean and Smith starting. Souttar's played two games now on the bounce so Batth might come back in.
Davies
Smith Collins Batth BMI McClean Thompson Powell Clucas Fletcher Gregory
That's what I think he'll go with, not what I necessarily would.

No offence to Clucas but he has been a bit below par since the season has started. Not sure why when he was playing so well during last seasons resumption?

It most likely will be Davies Chester Souttar Fox Smith Mikel Clucas TOB McClean Gregory Fletcher This is most likely. Gregory was lucky to get the goal versus Preston. Overall, I didn’t think he played that well. However, you don’t drop someone for scoring.

For me personally I think the most important thing is the tweak he made with the system.
Changing the 3-5-2 or (5-3-2 for those of us with a slightly negative view of it) to a 3-4-3 was a joy to watch tbh.
Regardless of who he actually picks I think this system could be a winner if it is sustainable at Championship level. For one it allows Nick Powell to be in areas of the pitch that can and will hurt the opposition.
He now has others breathing down his neck too as does almost every player in the squad.
More of the same Michael please whoever you choose on Sunday👍👍

Davies Smith Collins Souttar BMI Tymon TOB Mikel Thompson Fletcher Gregory
Thompson and TOB for me over Clucas and Powell purely on form and performances to date.
Smith has started well and is that more defensively solid than Brown and Tymon offers something going forward.
I really want to see the front 2 form a partnership and both Gregory and Fletcher make good runs and play with their heads up and in terms of unselfish play I'd put Brown ahead of both Vokes and Campbell.
To be honest there are about 16+ players with a very good claim to be in the starting 11 so I'm pretty relaxed about whoever is picked and there's a good chance there may be one or two left field decisions for tactical reasons and I really don't know enough about Birmingham to make that call.
