Thibaut has played his whole career on the left. Played there for Bolton and in his handful of appearances for us. We definitely need a RW imo. He can play either side, and his debut was as RW. But you'd say he's primarily a LW wouldn't you? Why move Thibaut over to the right when it's not his preferred position? You'll still have to bring a LW in.

Are we forgetting Tymon as backup left winger.
Our attention should be firmly on Right side although Verlinden can play there I doubt we will ever see the best of TeeVee until those concerned realise he requires a decent period of games on the left instead of the odd judgemental game he gets here and there.

You'll still have to bring a LW in. I disagree that it's his favoured position. He can, as I already said, play either side. It's just been a succession of managers that have pigeonholed him to be a leftwinger. Hell, Nathaan Jones even played him in the middle... His best position in youth football was on the right.

THE Right Winger, or the right "Winger"? Both

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-transfer-news-gossip-4420230A new winger with pace, creativity and goals An injury to James McClean or Tom Ince would leave O’Neill seriously short of wide attacking options, especially while Thibaud Verlinden is recovering from knee injury. Nick Powell and Tyrese Campbell have filled in there over the past few months but both would say their better used in the middle.
It’ll be interesting to see how often Campbell, who has scored four in six games as an outside right, will be used there this season and whether it will be Plan A or Plan B.
There has been speculation about the future of Ince but unless a decent offer comes in and Stoke have a couple of wingers lined up, it would seem unlikely they would be pushing him out of the door. O’Neill is trying to weave some magic and restore his old form and confidence. A firing Ince would be one of the first names on the teamsheet at most clubs in the Championship.
Either way, a new winger who can raise the bar, rather than act as deputy, should be top of the agenda.
Links have come with Hibernian’s Martin Boyle and Hull’s Mallik Wilks while other clubs have had joy in the past couple of seasons using loans, like Harry Wilson at Derby, Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira at West Brom or Jacob Murphy at Sheffield Wednesday.
A game changer who has a cracking season can be the difference between mid-table and a promotion push.Strange we haven't seen may concrete links to wingers - given we maybe think it'll be our key attacking addition? Lots of insubstantial one-line links, but nothing substantial as yet Do we think we'd primarily be looking for someone to play on the right of the three, with Verlinden an option on both flanks, but McClean seen as much much of a key player than Ince? We don't need a single one of those players if we can get Thibo Verlinden fit. We still need a pool of 4 wingers, rotate due to tiredness, injuries and suspensions If we use our good senses, we'll keep Tymon and explore the avenue of him playing as a wide player, albeit only on the left. It could be his Forest role or another variation.

Can someone explain to me what formation we are going to play if we use wingers?
433 with wingers is hopeless - it leaves the central striker isolated. That's how Rowett tried to play with McClean and Ince wide and we never looked like scoring.
O'Neill's 433 seems to involve inside forwards - like Brentford. Inverted wingers might work but if that's the way we are going I see Afobe and Campbell doing a better job.
The other formation O'Neill has favoured is 532 which means wingbacks but then do you go for an offensive defender (such as Tymon) or a winger who can track back (like McClean).
Traditional wingers work best in a 442 - but O'Neill hasn't shown the slightest inclination to play it
There are no end of threads on here claiming we need wingers but no-one has explained why and how we are going to shape up if we get one.

The lad at Hibs, Boyle, is more of a quick version of Cresswell. A striker on the wing type. We've been heavily linked with him all summer. It seems O'Neill is going or wants to go down that road.

The answer is Verlinden surely to fuck? Nothing would give me greater pleasure (football wise😉) than seeing Verlinden fully fit and ripping up the championship. But will MON see him as a first team regular after not really seeing him in many match situations? I have my doubts. For me if we can get someone decent and cheap enough in and Verlinden on the bench pushing it’ll be worth doing. Wingers are game changers and the more the merrier for me.

I can understand how that type of player would fit into O'Neill's 433 but it sort of proves my point - he's a striker playing wide not a winger. I genuinely don't see where a winger (in the traditional sense) fits into O'Neill's preferred lineup - the shape of the team would have to change and there is no evidence to suggest that he will. Going back to the OP - why do we need wingers?

www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-barnsley-submit-6-figure-bid-for-usa-international/Barnsley have had a bid turned down for Colorado Rapids winger Jonathan Lewis, Football Insider understands. The 23-year-old is a six-cap USA international and is attracting attention from a number of Championship clubs this summer. A Barnsley source has told Football Insider that the Tykes made an offer of around £400,000 for Lewis, but were knocked back by his current employers. The wide man was born in the USA but also holds a British passport, and looks as if he could have a number of sides trying to lure him to England in the coming weeks.

According to Transfermarkt he normally plays as a left winger but they (unusually) don't say if he is left or right footed. Has scored a fair number of goals for Colorado rapids (21 games - 8 goals). Was on the books of Bradford City as a youngster but left citing homesickness before appearing for their first team. Good age (23) English mother so no probs with work permit. Full caps for the USA. Worth a punt?

The answer is Verlinden surely to fuck? I'm not sure it is if were serious about pushing for top 6. I honestly thought he looked lightweight in the appearances he made before injury. Just cant see him being the answer as first choice in a 2 game a week league at the moment. As he physically develops maybe. But for now he's an impact from the bench at most. Plus he's recovering from a serious injury and this can take many players 12 months to really get over it if at all.

Would be a very good signing for someone in this league. Pace and trickery. He reminds me a bit of Ricardo, albeit a slightly different position. Swansea aren't very cash rich as a club, so I can't imagine the bid being very high.

I see Malik Wilks as being a more exciting option. He’s a right sided wide forward winger.

I think MON will play a back four now that he's got Fox at LB. And it's almost certain Mikel will anchor the midfield.
That leaves five places to accommodate McClean, Clucas, Powell, Fletcher, Campbell and a fit-again Joe Allen. So which two drop out to accommodate a right-winger?

McClean was player of the season. Clucas was top scorer. Powell is a favourite of the manager and the crowd. Fletcher is the target man/poacher we've needed. And MON often talks about Allen as being arguably one of his best players. Add a good right-winger, and two have to be left out.

I can see Campbelll being used more wide but wish he could hack 90 minutes. People going on about age etc but Campbell was dead on his feet after an hour v Brentford
