Back in football league after nearly 50 years. Won't be the way would of wanted to be promoted but they've done it nonetheless. Well done also to former player Mark Waddington. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53086548

Crewe finished bottom of the table (8 points behind Barrow who weren't even 2nd bottom) but because it was "easier" to get to Crewe, Northampton & Stockport and there was a desire to reward Hereford for their FA Cup run, Barrow were voted out after a second vote.

Gateshead were voted out because they were difficult to get to, and some say Newcastle didn’t want them on there doorstep. Many clubs survived multiple re-election bids due to there ability to manipulate the politics of the football league. The farcical Bradford (Park Avenue), once a grand club, perhaps being the only inevitable re-election failure post war. However, the loss of league football led to Bradford being liquidated in 1974. Once you were out, you really were out.

Great news just need to get Workington and Bradford Park Avenue back now. Bradford PA had a great stadium, better than Bradford City. The old home end, half the pitch and perimeter walls still exist.

My vague memory is Crewe, Rochdale and Hartlepool always seemed to be applying for re-election

Were Southport still a league club in the 70's ? Yes until 1978. And we played them away in our 1972 League Cup run. My first ever Stoke City game.

Were Southport still a league club in the 70's ? Yes. They dropped out at the end of the 1977/78 season to be replaced by Wigan. Again they weren't the bottom team (it was Rochdale that season).

Bradford PA are currently installing a plastic 3G pitch, not sure how that fits in the higher up the pyramid you get. The belief in Bradford is that the city is too small for two league clubs.

Stoke City failed to be re-elected to the football league in 1890. But we had at least "earned" it by finishing bottom of the first 2 tables. (Benji's great, great, great grandfather was bemoaning the crocodili gravitas. )

Really pleased for Barrow as they seemed to entirely disappear way down the football pyramid and have slowly re-established themselves. Will be good to see one of the "lost" clubs back in the league. As has been said we Bradford Park Avenue, Workington, and Gateshead should be back in. I can think of a few clubs who I wouldn't mind seeing relegated to allow them back in.

The perceived wisdom was that the city was too small for two clubs, and that either City or Avenue would go to the wall. City had private and public investment in the late 60s, Avenue didn’t have a pot to piss in. The rest is history.

It’s not larger than Stoke and Newcastle combined which at the 2011 census was 353,000. If you were to include Kidsgrove and Moorlands in the SOT built up area it rises to 436,000. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoke-on-Trent_Built-up_AreaBM PS Congratulations to Barrow, it’s good to have outpost clubs in the league.

True but presumably Bradford has nearby catchment areas too. Point I was trying to make was that it goes to show our area is a proper football area.

Got to remember that Stoke-on-Trent is practically a one club city.
If they didn't exist, the 2,000 Vale fans would probably have more of an interest in stamp collecting or spreading their own faeces on walls.

I think it's higher than that Mick the figures for SOT and NUL appear to be 386,000 and 130,000 respectively. It's always a misnomer to look at the population of SOT in isolation. In addition to the above there are many fans coming in from adjoining towns North, East, West and South.
