Mike Lyons....'Stoke have nothing new to show us'!!!!!
Nigel 'Gypo' Batch!
Match v Cardiff long before the nastiness.
Phil Heath was a target of some of the crowd if I remember but I thought he was decent.
Nicky Morgan was pretty good for us I thought, underrated. Good striker at that level but don't remember how he left us.
Coventry was next and that was that. They really did have their name on the cup that year. Just googled their run, beat Bolton at home then Man Utd, Us, Sheff Wed all away Leeds in the semi and Spurs. Deserved it in the end.

Brilliant find.
What a run that was.
And that kit is a cracker.

Some well taken goals there.
Carl Saunders was on fire for a while.

That was a 2nd replay after the first replay ended 1-1 a few nights earlier and we won the toss to host it
Mike Lyons ( Their manager ) stated they had nothing to fear after the previous two 1-1 draws 😊

Cardiff was then the Sunday. The first game at Grimsby, Carl Saunders gave us the lead, you could hardly see it through the snow. We led in the first replay as well and they scored a late free kick.

OMG I loved that phase of football
Carl Saunders just couldn't stop scoring, he never really looked like he had the ball under control but defences just couldn't handle him.

Philip Heath, Adrian's little brother?

I’ve said it on here loads of times in the past, but what a player Tony Kelly was. Eight goals for us in that clip, and he was responsible for four of them. I know he was a problematic character, but I believe Micks decision to let him leave the club was the beginning of the end for him at Stoke.

Philip Heath, Adrian's little brother? He was often referred to as that in the media. In fact the programme for one game had to point out that they weren't related. Got a lot of unfair abuse as someone pointed out but we do like a boo boy unfortunately and too many are quick to join in.

Very quick with loads of potential that ended up unfulfilled sadly.

He was great with Mills behind him the year before and played with real confidence during the amazing run the next season but he got a toe injury and came back flat. He then got worse and worse and ended up a liability.

Went to Oxford and retired aged 28.

I remember Sammy Chung saying "if he could pass a chip shop like he passes a ball he'd be a world beater". On Tony Zico Kelly he was working at Bolton but had a massive heart attack. Does anyone know how he is?

Does anyone know how he is? I saw him at Bolton working with their community trust at the end of last year and he was looking well. I think the heart attack was 2012-ish.

Mark Lawrenson bought him for Oxford after being impressed with him in the Liverpool cup game in Jan ‘88. His winning goal against Villa away sticks in the mind too, probably because it was our annual shock away win as well. Gary Hackett took his place in the team the season after, looking back was he really an upgrade? I thought Phil was a decent player for Stoke in that era, strong pace and direct, chipped in with a few goals, and always a willing outlet on the wing.

I always felt Gary was better for Shrewsbury (especially against us). I’d say Beagrie was Heath’s replacement. He certainly took his position on the left wing. Hackett was a right winger who replaced Tony Ford.
