I would like to see some photos if possible of away days and any good stories.Gutted I never to any of the away games.

I’m sure in the early 70s we won 1-0 away at Rome and the players had to wait in the dressing room for ages after the game because of the nutters outside. Also vaguely remember at a corner in a home game. May also have been Rome ? John Ritchie was getting persistently niggled at a corner be someone, had enough, turned round punched the player and got sent off. Any records of this anywhere. I was only around 10 at the time so not sure how good my memory is on the above.

Remember being quite awe struck at home to Fiorentina one year. Effenberg and Batistuta.
Think it was 0-0.

We lost to Notts County on pens and would have played Brescia I think in the final.
I always thought we should have signed Steve Cherry who I think was their keeper that night.

Yes we're still the holders Never understood why the trophy is in the Derby cabinet Maybe something to do with the dodgy sheep lovers being the first winners Maybe they never handed the original back

They had Jason Kearton in goal, we'd had him on loan a few years earlier. He saved two of our penalties (from Overson and Paul Allen I think) and Gleghorn put another just wide. Agree, he was an excellent keeper. We should have been in for him but he ended up moving to Crewe.

Was Cherry as I remember they were real unlucky not to win. Actually they may have been in 2 finals but def Steve Cherry at Wembley.

I was standing next to Nick Hancock in the Boothen during that penalty shoot out he couldn't watch and he had this huge silver quilted jacket on, looked like he was heading to the moon!

Didn't they have a famous striker playing for them, Fiorintina not Sunderland, Batistuta (sp?)

Yes as Onlooker said Batistuta and Effenburg played that night. Who’d have thought the 20/25 minute Joe Jordan’s red and white army in the game after against Leicester would soon turn to jeers especially in the tactical masterclass at home to Bath😄

I never realised Oliver Bierhoff played for Ascoli in that game either. He went from losing to (a soon to be relegated) Notts County at Wembley to scoring the winner for Germany in the Euro 96 final 14 months later!

I would like to see some photos if possible of away days and any good stories.Gutted I never to any of the away games. 71/72 season was epic. In all we played 71 competitive games starting in August 71 and finishing mid June 72 with the Anglo Italian Cup. The final game of that season was actually played 5th Aug 72 with the FA Cup 3rd place play-off final from previous season vs Birmingham a week before the 72/73 Div 1 season kicked off. Some other crazy stats from that season as well; we played Man Utd 7 times losing only once and knocking them out of both cup competitions in front of combined attendance of over 300,000. Player appearance figures were eye watering with 9 players each playing over 50 games. Jackie Marsh played the most with 69 games. Had it not been for a good start to the Div 1 Campaign the number of games almost relegated us as we only won twice in the league after early November. A truly memorable season for us older Stokies.
