Okay, we appreciate that the decision to merge the threads hasn't gone down well with some, so we've created this thread is to discuss the ramifications of the coronavirus on football only.
If the thread descends into anything else then it will be removed.

Liverpool have renamed COVID-19 to "A Most Inconvenient Truth". I cannot imagine what their fans will feel like if the season is scrapped. Imagine if this happened when we got to the FA Cup Final?

Very difficult to even start speculating what will happen, No-one is in a position to make any decision on this anytime soon. Too many variables.

My feeling is compromise. It is extremely unlikely/impossible for fixtures to be completed. Instead those clubs currently in the lead position of each division will be given a title only and be declared Champions. All issues of relegation and promotion will be inapplicable.Compensation claims are subject to usual legal negotiation. Clubs may be awarded reduced prize money according to their finishing position, and to help alleviate financial pressures. All existing contracts for players will be notionally extended for one year, unless renegotiated. ie players would automatically be opted in to a further 12 months on the same contract, unless they disputed things and opted out. Existing ticket holdings for fans would be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Sounds more likely that promotions will happen but they'll have 2 extra teams in the PL then relegate 5 the following season and it will trickle down until the normal numbers are satisfied. I think I'd prefer that option. Not sure anyone wants legal cases over what will be hundred's of millions of pounds for Leeds, WBA, Norwich, Villa & Bournemouth to wrangle over. Unless there is some cast-iron law/rule in the EFL, which going from past observation of the EFL sounds unlikely.

I never watch it but I did last night
The debate was excellent in how they are going to try and finish off this season and the point about players contracts ending on June 30th was an excellent point especially if the season is still being played at that point
Also loans only run until the last game of the season in May.....it’s a minefield

If they decided that the current season is null and void Does Bury get a reprieve if they get there shit together I wouldn’t imagine so. Their case was them not being a viable club at the start of the season, so what happens after that is irrelevant. They’re in the same boat they were 3 months ago.

The FA Cup is the most important tournament in English football. Expunge the whole league season from the record books and finish off the FA Cup at the earliest opportunity.
This should also be a good pretext to end the winter break.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to play the remaining games behind closed doors and offer viable streaming?

Wouldn’t it be easier just to play the remaining games behind closed doors and offer viable streaming? What if half the squads are isolating though because players or staff are potentially infected? It’s not just as simple as keeping fans away.

They have Jamie Redknapp and Gary Rowett on for the show tonight.
I imagine Euro 2020 will be a big talking point for the show now that it's been delayed.

Well after a two week isolation period (which is what they are doing now) it should mean they’re 99% will be ready to go won’t it? I doubt it. They’re most likely not isolating right now. None of us are, other than if we’re infected, are we? They’ve got to train together. The likelihood of every club isolating now and all being ready and uninfected in a week or so to complete 9 games is nigh on zero.

This is the least of the worlds troubles and is now clear and obvious to me it won't be restarting any time soon. I would guess, and a conservative one at that, that we'll be looking at early July at the very earliest.

How many people do you think are involved in getting a Premier League/EFL game completed? There's the teams, officials, coaching staff, stadium staff, media and if matches are to be streamed then there will be countless people involved in that side of things. Emergency services and other medical staff would also have to be involved at a time when they are needed most.

Concur with "mateythestokeie' that the easiest solution is to complete seasons games behind closed doors. My rationale for this is as follows: We don't know how long this situation is going to exist or if its going to get worst. The players are young, and I haven't heard of whole, or major parts of squads isolated, and in the past some squads have had several players out with flu and matches have continued. The players/teams have endured a long season, and with the normal end just weeks away they should should be able to get their just rewards (champions, promoted etc) then have a break. The club (Stoke) (and many others) already have the majority of their money banked from season ticket sales, and as a paying supporter I don't mind losing the fee paid for the last few games. I'm sure clubs have their own testing regimes, and isolation plans, therefore two teams coming together would pose little threat to health. Matches could be broadcast on radio, TV, and streamed which would give some entertainment to those footy fans isolating at home. In due course the new season would eventually start without and 'what ifs' should the this season be abandoned or reduced.

As things are developing, I reckon June is the earliest we will resume, with a mad month of summer football to wrap things up, so we have July off and are ready to go in August gain. That is the best case scenario, to my mind. Euros then move to 2021.

As the post an hour or so after yours (from Vadiation_Ribe) shows (so i appreciate that you wouldn't have seen it before posting), there's only about 4 Prem clubs that are even training at the moment. Unless clubs suddenly go back in within the next few days (which seems incredibly unlikely, given that the govt. advice is for everyone to stay indoors apart from for essential travel etc.) then when they do go back, they'd need weeks to get back to fitness before they could then resume to finish the season. Any idea of "playing behind closed doors" is 100% completely gone now i'd say. It's either extend this season into the next one, or finish it now.
