www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-transfer-news-live-3672631First question: Having viewed the video from Middlesbrough, any positives?I’ve obviously reviewed the game back. To have that level of control particularly first half is a positive, but we have to be more ruthless and make it more difficult for the opposition. We’ve seen here at home how difficult it can be when you go behind, but we gave the opportunity back to Middlesbrough. It was similar at Cardiff. Can you get them out of this relegation battle?Yes, we have to, and the message has been loud and clear to the players and they are under no illusion. We’ve lost more games than we did last season and we have to make sure we are more difficult to beat, as well as winning games, have a tougher side to ourselves to turn defeats into draws, particularly away from home. But there’s enough in terms of quality, but what we have tried to do is put players with the right attitude and desire on to the pitch.

More difficult to beat? I've seen eggs more difficult to beat than us!

How will you cope with injuries if we are hit in bad areas of the team and with Financial Fair Play kicking in during January? Any transfer window is difficult, January in particular, and with a big squad it’s more difficult because we have to make room financially and in terms of numbers.
The size of the squad has made my job difficult in the six weeks I’ve been in, even in training trying to evaluate players.
When we come out the other side of January we must try to have a better balance of squad because we have a lack of width and only one natural left back available because of Tymon being allowed to go out on loan.
So they are all challenges, but I still believe this squad, even trimmed down, has enough to get away from the bottom of the table, but additions with pace in the right areas will help us and bring in the necessary competition.
The responsibility is all of ours, me and the players.
We have an opportunity over the next three games to get that consistency again and it’s a message we’ve hammered home to the players since Friday night.

Did you know about the financial problems when you came? Yes. I had four years left on my contract so I didn’t need to take the job, but the challenge was something I was prepared to meet having met the owners and heard their short-term and long-term vision.
The FFP rules will restrict us, but the club will try and help me to move the squad forward and hopefully we will see things happen in January.
Before the FA Cup game against Brentford, unlikely.
The players who came at the start of the season haven’t had the best starts to their Stoke careers and the responsibility is on them to change that.
I’ve spoken to them today to say they have to work harder as a group, not behave like individuals, because then it unravels.

Anything that has surprised you since taking the job? Probably the only thing is the nature of the games and how quickly they come and your preparation time, turning it round every three days.
I knew my players better with Northern Ireland after eight years, but here’s I’ve had six weeks and that’s probably been the biggest challenge.
Also, the margin in the games, you can only play well for a little time and that can be enough to win games.
When I look back at the games we’ve lost, we possibly could have picked up two or three draws which would have given a slightly different complexion.

Injuries? Woods and Etebo were ill, Ward and McClean came off so they are doubts.
Peter and Ryan are back in training today, and Ryan Shawcross trained today, so the only real concerns are around Stephen and James.
Changes? We have to be mindful of that with the schedule of games.
It’s always easier to go into games with a positive result and that’s what we will be aiming to do after Boxing Day.
Sheffield Wednesday? I think they’ve won four out of five so they have momentum and confidence and that will be a challenge for us.
We have to focus more on ourself to make sure we are at a maximum and we are more than capable of winning.
Fans unhappy with how we are losing - you need them with you? Yes, but I understand the frustrations and it’s happened over a period of time with a low win percentage.
Since our time in the Championship I think we have won 16 in total which for a club of this size is unacceptable.
Fans can make a huge difference to the players and I would urge that on Boxing Day.
We have shown anxiety in our play and is something we need to remove, to go into games positive and a positive atmosphere in the stadium helps that.

Struggling to have any faith in this. We’ll go with a similar side with the same formation and look bladdered.

By ditching this abysmal 4-3-3 system he's blindly persevering with even though we haven't the players to play it. Oh and maybe just maybe give our only creative player (Powell) in the 35 man squad a start rather than expecting him to do some minor miracle in the 5 minute cameo role he gets each week.

That's why certain players aren't starting I'm afraid.

Etebo will play on Boxing Day. Hopefully he plays to his full potential and everything is back rosy in his particular garden.
I see a midfield 3 of Etebo, Allen and Cousins with Clucas at left back.

I thought that after Friday's "efforts" some sanity would be restored and Cousins will have been fucked off back to the oblivion from whence he came!

Granted he made a big error for their 2nd goal and he hardly covered himself in glory with his non-lung busting attempts to recover his error, but whilst we were 3 in midfield and he had a fairly limited role to perform, I thought he was doing it pretty well, as he had done in the previous 2 games. He won the ball and kept it simple. Yet again, once we had 2 in midfield, we just got overrun because we simply aren't physical enough or athletic enough. He's an easy scapegoat is Cousins. I thought he was OK right up to their 2nd goal against Boro and he'd done well enough in the 2 games prior to that. Clucas was far worse than Cousins, as were Ince and Mclean whilst I'd take Cousins every day of the week over Woods.

Tried . . . and failed.
Perhaps we will have tried even harder than before and it will show on Boxing Day. Since Wednesday is my one and only game this season, I truly hope so.

For all the talk, we'll play much the same side, with much the same formation, and get much the same battering.
No point expecting anything less. We've got years of this until all the big contracts run down, little will change until then, and that's assuming we don't go kaput in the interim.
League 2 is where we'll be before any significant upturn (at least!).
Sorry, that's how it is. This club is now arguably THE biggest example of a moderately successful and stable club crashing down through the divisions. Forget Sunderland, or Portsmouth, or Charlton - we are now it!

I would advise anyone going to the Boxing Day game to imbibe liberally before the game, so as to make the 4-0 battering coming up, but a blur 😂
