We've wasted the new ball. Could be a long day in the field from here.......

Turned out not too bad in the end - well, maybe not the very end.
Bowling NZ out for 375 is better than we feared after going wicketless with the second new ball. But losing two quick wickets is disappointing.
That said, day 3 is nicely set up for Root. 18 overs gone if he can see out the first hour tomorrow, he should be well set to take advantage of the ageing Kookaburra.
What we need to do is quite simple (in theory); do to New Zealand in this test what they did to us in the last one. And bat big in our first innings to set up, hopefully, an innings victory.
But, can we do it?

Currently 139-2 Burns and Root share a century stand.
Root 47 N.O. and Burns 76 N.O. - keep it going !
EDIT Root get's his 50 !

Root 114 n.o. at the close - a big score at long last.
What the hell was Burns thinking/doing ? Good to see him get his century though.
Still over 100 behind with 5 wickets left.

Well done to both Root and Burns. I’d say Root ton is, so far, a good score rather than a big one. I’m minded of what Gooch used to say when he was part of the England set up when Vaughan was captain. He wasn’t satisfied with batsmen getting to three figures. He wanted them to get “Daddy” hundreds - up to and beyond 200. Those knocks, generally, define matches. Hundred and out keeps you in the game. Gooch was absolutely correct in his thinking. So while congratulating Root for getting to a ton. He knows the his job is nowhere near done. The best chance we have of winning this test (albeit that is very slight) is he, like the NZ keeper did in the first test, goes big in this innings. Actually very big!

We've got to find a way of putting 500 on the board and really turn the screw.
Can't see it with what batting is left, we'll be on a par with their score and they'll kill the game dead I reckon.
Here's hoping though......

England have been terrific today. Completely taken the sting out of New Zealand and it’s the first time we’ve scored 400 in a first innings since 2017.

Here's hoping though...... We got pretty close to 500 - and still managed a late order collapse! There ain’t much chance of us chance of us winning this test with so much rain likely tomorrow, but there are some positives to take from the series mostly Root rediscovering how to score a “daddy” hundred. Let’s hope this the start of a resurgence for him and he returns to being one of the fab 4.

We did but the pitch was hard to score quickly on and New Zealand bowled accurately so we didn’t move the game on fast enough, we needed a Stokes or a Butler to push on at 5/6 and over for a couple of hours. Great knock from Root though, he was busy at the crease and scoring through all parts of the ground which he does when he’s at his best....

I think whoever bats at 6 and 7 needs to be able to bat fast and hard. That’s part of the reason I’d prefer to see Stokes bat at 6 rather than 5. And Buttler, if he can get his head around test batting is the perfect keeper / batsman for #7. But he has to deliver better performances with the bat.

The great thing with Root was that he never looked like getting out and hopefully he can keep this going in South Africa later this month. We didn't really need to score quickly. Scoring at the same rate that New Zealand have in their 2nd innings so far would have left us 200 ahead at the close of play and in a really strong position. When your opener gets a century and your No 4 a double ton, 476 seems a bit disappointing, especially when your only real chance of winning on this pitch is to bat once and try to bowl the opposition out on the last day. (I don't think that was a 6 batsmen failing to reach double figures type of wicket). Looks like a draw and then on to South Africa. At least that series is to be played in daytime GMT, so I have a great excuse not to go out in the winter weather and sit in my armchair with tea and biscuits in a nice warm room watching the cricket. Looking forward to it!!

Can anyone remember a more boring series than this one?
Two really poor pitches which have resulted mainly in very dull cricket.

Can anyone remember a more boring series than this one? Two really poor pitches which have resulted mainly in very dull cricket. Yeah - it’s been a less than inspiring tour. Pros - Root getting a daddy hundred. Burns cementing a spot as opener. Pope scoring some runs. Cons - the bowling was anaemic. Root’s captaincy is poor particularly his management of Archer. Highlight - that drop by Denly.

I thought it was a bit of a nothing tour and just a fill in before the "real stuff" starts in South Africa. I know there was more to it than that but I couldn't really get any enthusiasm for it, maybe it was because it was during the night.
A few positives for me, and an equal number of negatives.
A lot of work needs doing on the Test team that's for sure.

The epitome of a pointless mini-series. Dull cricket on dull pitches. I normally enjoy us playing NZ, home or away, but this was utterly mediocre.
Good that Root got his daddy, albeit watched by three men & a dog in the ground. Not so good that his captaincy was its usual mix of baffling and awful.
The Saffers series should be much more interesting. Boxing Day test at Centurion? Mrs Q working all Boxing Day? Bl00dy marvellous :-)
A quick's paradise, bowling should be a tad lively.
Pass us the sandpaper, Bruce.

Highlight - that drop by Denly. TBF barring a couple of spells from Santner, I don't think any bowler has really come out well in this series. The pitches have dictated as much. I've no doubt Archer will be a different proposition on some rock hard South African wickets especially as they seam as well as bounce. Which suits Broad too. But all in all, a really crap exhibition. I like New Zealand but they are probably the dullest side in World Cricket because of they play within their limits and know what they do well. They probably gambled on an England collapse in one of the tests and asked for pitches to favour that. Not picking Lockie Ferguson probably backs that up to, as the way I see it he could be a real threat on their tour of Australia but he didn't play.
