6.5 There are still deficiencies in one or two positions but I do think we’ve added pretty well on the whole. I think that we now have a squad who can potentially grow together as a team - only time will tell if they can release that potential.

So many changes , impossible to judge 'till the end of the season imo.
So far 7/10 for the clear out that was sooooo badly needed, a good start on a long road back to the things that we have always been know for.
Oatcakes, Pies, Beer and Guts... Used to be some singing as well didn't there. The football has always been the icing on a very proud cake.

An excellent window.
No one on here predicted we would bring in 10 players, maybe not the 10 best possible, but we have beaten other clubs to some of the players we have signed. The best players are always going to prefer to go to the Prem., or big city clubs, or CL clubs.
We have not splashed out on any expensive signings, which personally I am pleased with having seen £100m wasted on very disappointed players over recent years.
We have continued to move out old players past their sell by date and even moved on a few unsaleable ones.
Clearly we have invested in players of good character generally who will put in a shift. We should have a settled dressing room.
The 2 black spots are the apparent weaknesses at DMF and LB/LWB, but the manager has expressed confidence in who he has. I thought McClean did alright for his first competitive game in a new position and will improve as the season progresses. I think there is undue concern about the defence. We conceded the 4th lowest number of goals of any team last season and we are not weaker having had Martina at RB and Indi at LB for much of the season. Like last season we have started with a couple of silly mistakes, but that can be cut out, as it was last season.
The reason we finished 16th was lack of goals; only the relegated side scored less than us. We have been poor at creating for a long time and poor at converting chances into goals, including penalties. With the players brought in to add pace (Hogan) and guile (Duffy) and given time for 10 new players to learn to play together, I'm confident we will start to score goals.
Finally, we have yet again managed to hold onto out crown jewels and not let the likes of Butland, Etebo, Allan, and any promising youngsters go. Other clubs have lost some of their best players. This to my mind is a big plus that these players are prepared to stay and not try and jump ship like Arni, Shaq, N'Diaye.
Because of the 2 black spots, I'd mark 8/10.

Think it tells us a lot about the type of manager we have in charge.
Only comfortable coaching a certain type of standard, whether that standard is good enough to match the ambitions of the fans is unknown at this point. He certainly has a different perspective of 'Proud' than I do, the window is filled with barricades for most of our youngsters at a time when the Acadamy was starting to bare fruit.
After his first 4 months in charge he needed an exceptional summer window to claw back some respect, which, to be fair to him, was always going to be a tough task with our recruitment and scouting stats recently. It started with a shed load of freebies that do not suit his current plans and finished with a couple of panic loans to cover recent injuries.
Not using the foreign market is his biggest give away.

Kind of feels like when I used to go shopping for old records. Would come out with half a dozen or so vinyl; some bands I'd heard of, some I'd take a risk on as I liked an odd song I'd heard or the album cover.
Wouldn't really know how good they were until I'd played them properly at home. A few would be instant favourites, others left to gather dust on the shelf...

The transfer window was, and will remain, hampered by the four or five players we just cannot shift. In hampers the window both in transfer fees and wage negotiations. As we've paid no more than a few million for incomings and a couple of million for outgoings it's clear the position is now sell to buy.
Berahino out is a massive part of this window.

10 only for Berahino is gone. (FUCK!!! I warned about this bad apple from the start) 3/10 for rest of the business done. We have signed player no better than we have and we still have a lot of deadwood we have not moved on.
The key now is to give Campbell match time, and we will see the true potential of this young player. He should start matches.

It was always hard work signing players when we had so many to sell. We didn't manage to sell enough but did make some progress with the deadwood. If we can shift a few more out before the beginning of September then the window will look a lot better

I think you totally underestimate the difficulties we currently have due to FFP combined with the toxic effects of the number of over paid, underperforming players on our books due to mistakes in our transfer policy in the past few years. We all know that the Coates family have the resources to have bought, for example, Gayle AND paid his wage demands - effectively Premier League wages. The fact that we did not accept his wage demands was nothing to do with the family being too tight and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that, until players like Wimmer, Imbula and a few others depart the club, any big spending on new players is going to leave us at risk of a points deduction and, possibly, relegation because we would have breached FFP rules. You might point to the fact that players like Bojan have left - he will have left with a pretty huge golden handshake in the form most of the balance of his contract being paid to allow him to move on a free by "mutual consent." Sadly, for us, you can't simply terminate a player's contract because you no longer want him in your squad. We were lucky with Berahino in that his antics on that fateful night in London appears to have limited the money we had to fork out to get rid of him - but the whole sorry affair will still have left the club showing a loss on his ill judged purchase. You would be better judging our manager (ANY manager of our club) and our owners when the toxic players on huge wages who don't make the match day squad have left the club. Losses will still be incurred but hopefully the saga will be at an end in a year or two. Then and only then are we going to see the club behave like a normal club again - able to match the spending of its peers. The brief Jones and the transfer team will have had this summer is to transform the squad at minimal cost to mitigate the possibility of FFP problems. That they appear to have done. Only time will tell how effective the new squad is. If we do make top six this season (a big, if, of course) then this summer's window will have been one of our most successful ever.

How can anyone rate the window when the manager has one hand tied behind his back?
Yes, they are probably all of his signings and yes, he has brought in 10 players but at what opportunity cost?
We have a squad with players on huge money, still paying for in amortization no doubt that we can't shift off the books.
Nobody knows the full ins and outs but it doesn't take Einstein to realise that it is seriously affecting what we can spend and will only get worse until we can shift them.
Our two relegated friends have done so much more to shift players and have done so much better in not collecting over priced shit that can't be sold on, nevermind cannot be given away for free. Kevin Wimmer for example, been on trial this summer and still can't find a club. One of our 18M record signings!
This will not get any better or easier until the club have found a way to either sell them or wipe them off the books somehow, which with FFP and a new manager needing new players is nigh on impossible.
One down, one to go.

The window has a feel of a shopping trip to Lidl. You go there knowing that they don’t really sell the fundamental basics you need, but the pull of cheap stuff pulls you in. So, as you are wandering down the cereal aisle a set of polished BBQs jump out or a multi purpose powered screw driver and you think...got to have those. When you get home you realise you haven’t got what you really wanted and have just ended up with cheap crap that you didn’t need and that will soon fall apart.
4/10.

Uninspiring signings which haven't addressed the problem areas and we're still currently stuck with some deadwood which will hopefully leave before the foreign window closes.
Overall a disappointing 4/10

Plus points: + Getting rid of Saido (+3) + Getting rid of Afobe (+2) + Bringing in a mix of good players and hardworking pros (Gregory, Duffy and Powell). We've addressed deficiencies in defence by bringing in Lindsay and competition at RB (Smith). Hogan has promise if we play to his strengths. (+5)
Negatives: + No LB or CDM (-2) + Not getting rid of the rest of the bomb squad (-2)

Which is why the youngsters should have been given the green light to step up instead of adding new wage bills to our already inflated costs. I suspect that the youngsters will be given their chance. But the Championship season is a long one and to over rely on youngsters might keep us comfortably in mid table but it would almost certainly not get us promotion. Yesterday there was a post berating Jones for signing a new striker when it put Campbell's squad place at risk - a few hours later we loaned out one of our first team strikers - not Campbell - but Afobe. The occasional youngster can come into a first team squad as a teenager, shine consistently, keep his place and that's it, job done. But many more need a game here, a sub appearance there - until they learn their trade and either become regulars - or move on. Jones has strengthened his squad, got rid of more dead wood than I expected and has kept most of the youngsters who were on the verge of the first team. Hopefully, they will get their chances this season. The only one I wish we still had at the club is Souttar - and we probably would still have him if Ryan's injury had happened a few weeks sooner. Still, Souttar will get game time at a club and for a manager who clearly rates him and, hopefully will be a better player for it next season.

If Saturday was their best God help us all, really looking forward to watching McClean and Smith struggling as wing backs and Cousins passing backwards and sideways well done to Nath and the transfer team for adding to the huge pile of deadwood we already own, how many youngsters are you expecting to see on a regular basis by the way ? Saturday was not their best was it. Jack blunder. Experience for Nathan Collins. Poor team work in Midfield. Transfer window was still open. Nathan said we are not complete. The team work will come. How lovely for Collins to gain experience. Are you convinced our wing backs are fit for purpose ? they are the positions which make the diamond system operate, Cousins is not the answer either how we have not signed a CDM and a LB who are ready for the roles is very worrying, I see that Powell is an injury doubt for this weekend no surprise there then.

I'll give it a generous 7/10 - there are clearly positions where the quality needs to be improved, but I think this is a transitional squad. We have added creativity in Powell and Duffy, and all the new signings seem to be strong characters without the toxic attitudes shown by some who have been shipped out (though I'd like to see the remaining wasters in the 'Bomb squad' out of the club ASAP.

7/10 from me,I'm a little bit disappointed that we didn't achieve more outgoings. Still we seem to have a pretty well balanced squad. I don't get all this wailing and gnashing of teeth over the left back position. We have three well qualified candidates to effectively fill this position and I expect McClean(sp?) to make an outstanding contribution when he acclimatizes. The biggest club in the country proved that you can take two out and out wingers and convert them to outstanding wing/fullbacks,in Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia.
