What I don't understand is why we have a thread about a gay sportsman. In any other walk of life being gay is a none issue why does being a gay footballer fall into its own category of extraordinary. When Gareth came out it created headlines worldwide. When will young talks about it or Elton John or Ruth Davidson people shrug their shoulders. What is the fascination about gay sports people in particular? Because as the OP says, this will be the first player to come out so it literally is extraordinary. It shouldn't be extraordinary but clearly lots of people still find it hard to take that step, particularly in an environment like professional football.

Exactly, the Justin Fashanu story is a salutary episode in football's history...think I read somewhere that,by his own admission,he was offered a lot of money to 'come out' but was offered even more money by certain, interested parties to remain in the closet,so to speak.

Doesn't matter /. Shouldn't matter what. He does for a living In a perfect world yes it shouldn't, and to the vast majority of decent football fans it won't make any odds. But for whatever reasons, people still find it tough to "come out", particularly in football. The statistics demonstrate this by the fact this is the first person to do so. This individual is presumably using their platform to try to encourage others to follow. It takes a lot of bravery to be the first.

Why do you have to make an issue about being gay or whatever? And then people who say congratulations etc. Do your thing and no need to declare to the world. Surely labelling yourself by doing so. Is no big deal so why make it one?

Leviticus also bans tattoos, clothes made of mixed fabric, bowl-haircuts, growing more than one type of crop in a field, and gossip. Well, it's easy to understand why these ideas above was presented then and can still be appropriate, since they're all sensible and came for a reason.

This country was a lot less accommodating to gay people within very recent memory, so although we've come an incredibly long way and should celebrate that as a nation, we should also bear in mind that we still have work to do.

Now it is probably over accommodating as some seem to wear as a badge of honour and even job applications now ask your sexuality, why that is in the slightest bit relevant to say stacking shelves in Aldi is above me. Thins have gone full circle so like I said, why this so called coming out nonsense. An attention thing for me in many cases

An attention thing for me in many cases They ask you that in job applications for monitoring purposes, not to determine who gets the role. It might seem like an attention thing if you've never had to live with the difficulties associated with coming out. I wouldn't know to be honest - I'm not gay and I'm not about to start - but I'm willing to give people the benefit of the doubt that coming out can be a difficult thing to do.

Why should you monitor if someone is bloody gay or not? Shouldn't be on an application form full stop. If you like getting on with hamsters in your spare time is your business ( unless the job is in a hamster petting zoo of course) The fact they have this big deal with 'coming out' so it's called is bringing attention on yourself. Why would someone want to do it on social media in the first place and why on earth are so many interested? Bloody nonsense

Why would someone want to do it on social media in the first place and why on earth are so many interested? Bloody nonsense Lots of employers monitor it anonymously because they want their workforce to be representative of society as a whole. So if, say, 10% of the population at large is gay but only 1% of the workforce is gay, they will want to know why. Eg. Are they not advertising roles in as many places as they should to attract a wide range of people? Etc. The monitoring forms should always be optional, and you can normally answer "prefer not to say" if you want. As for social media, I think your point applies to most stuff people say on it. Attention seeking waste of time!
