It shouldnt be an issue. But sadly it still is.
Lets face it, football still gets spoiled by "lads". It is a minority, but this culture does still exist. We shouldn't have racism in society but it is still sadly widespread, and there continue to be issues every year with racist abuse from the stands.
I see plenty of comments about not understanding why the player needs to broadcast it. It's not necessarily about broadcasting it, it's about not having to hide it. There is a subtle but major difference in that.
It's also about increasing the number of public people that those who are struggling themselves with their sexuality have.
Not only that - but the longer it has taken for this to happen, the higher profile it is going to be. It does need to have someone mentally strong enough to deal with the knock-on effect. To be the public figurehead, to suddenly become the most commonly talked about player in the country for some time, and to also take the brunt of the hatred from the scum of society too.
No matter how much most of us "don't care", it is a major event and it will change football for the better. It will hopefully be the start of genuine action in the sport (on the field, in the changing rooms and in the stands). We should care.

Completely agree, However I think if the account is true, almost creating a countdown to the announcement isn't the right way to go about it. It will create enough attention when it happens. It's time it happened though, long overdue. No-one should ever have to hide their loved ones and families in fear of ridicule and hate.

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Although the vast, vast majority of the public wouldn't give two shits, you're bound to get abuse from certain sections of crowd on a matchday. Alternatively, if you came out you'd be heralded as the saving grace of gay footballers and become the 'The Gay Man Who Plays Footie', and not just a footballer.
It's a massive shame that a bloke can't come out without being under the microscope of both sides of the political divide.

I love how even in this day and age, and this thread is a classic example, heterosexual men still attempt to mansplain homosexuality and the whys and wherefores of the politics of coming out.

I bet whoever it is, FullerMagic has already whittled it down to a shortlist of four and is currently studying Belgian YouTube videos for signs of campness in the player's running style. 😂😂😂😂

Many people have reacted with a "who cares" and I understand that many people really couldn't give the slightest toss. However, spare a thought for the young lad who might be coming to terms with a different sexuality. Being young is hard enough for most people. Living with feelings of confusion or shame or embarrassment or simply loneliness on top of that every day must be really hard. The fact that football and football culture hasn't yet come to terms with homosexuality is tragic. The day it is normalised will be a boon to the mental wellbeing of millions of people: to see that someone "abnormal" can be accepted and celebrated by everyone for their talent and their character alone. It does matter.

Some fine day we will be amazed this conversation ever took place, but it will first need some brave souls to take the plunge.
In the words of legendary song writer Guy Clarke:
"Spread your arms and hold your breath Always trust your cape"

Le Saux got unmerciful stick off the Stoke faithful and he is straight. Goodness knows what an openly gay player will get down the Brit.

Times have changed massively. Anyone giving out abuse now would probably get more abuse than the footballer they were giving abuse to.

Thousands of years of religion will probably not get outdone by a couple of decades of LGBT. Not for a long long time.
That's the way I see it in the bigger picture.
Personally I think it's a joke that we still judge for being gay but I kind of get why it happens due to above reason.
We have essentially been conditioned throughout generations to be homophobic. Unravelling that is a lot.

Freddie Ljungberg Marc Overmars Justin Fashanu He's hardly the first is he? Not sure about that list, Freddie Ljungberg married Chantal in 2013 with whom he already had 2 sons, and Marc Overmars married his long term partner Natalie in 2014. We all know the Justin Fashanu story.

The amount of emotional pressure he will be under when he comes out will be enormous. To have something as big as this pressing on him, well I woundn't know which way to turn. It would be a good help when he comes out if all his friends stood up and got right behind him.

We all know the Justin Fashanu story. Gary Hackett ( allegedly 😉) The player I mean. Pierre Van Hooijdonk and El Hadji Diouf who 'married' his very young friend's sister (allegedly again) I remember some people actually believing the John O'Shea thing started by Man City fans

Unravelling that is a lot. I do not get why it happens at all, there is no excuse, religion, conditioning whatever, to judge someone for who they love is abhorrent and there is no excuse for it. And it is these people who make, men, women etc such as myself nervous to show any sort of affection (i'm talking something as small as holding hands) in public through fear of being judged. It is becoming mainstream in media, and our sport is one of the last to follow us into the 21st century. Is this a wind up? I hope not, and the person responsible should it be a wind up needs to issue a public apology etc. It's long overdue. Giving those who are homophobic, sexist, racist etc excuses just gives them a platform to hate.

Who cares? The fact that a big deal even needs to be made about this, is a big contributing factor for the stigma attached to it. Why does their need to be an announcement?
Do your thing. Black, White, straight, gay, fat, thin, round, square, ginger, brunette. Who actually cares?
Just get on with your life, do your thing, stop labelling everything, we’re all human. Live and let live, treat all people the same regardless of their attributes.

If some one brings religion into it then I live a die by this one in support of all “alternative “ lifestyles Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Homophobic chanting was reported at over half of Brighton's games last season. Seems like there are still a few idiots out there.
