Blue Monday became the UKs biggest selling single 25 years after it was first released !! 12 inch single. It wasn't called Blue Monday when it first came out in 1982 when NO played it during a Peel session. Can't remember what it was.

Here’s an irony. A band massively influenced by PF doing a JD song... MMm... I'd say they're equally influenced by JD, and timeline wise, more so perhaps than the Floyd. I see the Radiohead as coming from a more punkish/new wave angle than a prog one. Fun fact for you Bath. Sir Thom of Yorke had a weekly disco at The Vines pub on Fore Street Exeter. He was at the art school, him and his chums would dress the pub up, different themes. Known as the Cheesy Club.. the music was sixties pop, sci fi theme tunes etc. Big floor filler was the test match theme. He was a Dandelion Clock haired Bacchanalian in them days {93/4}, not much of the miserablist introspection then, though he never played his own music when djing. He is to blame for Muse from Teignmouth, drew them to the bright lights of Exeter and the Cavern Club. He owes a debt to music for that.

You lucky bastard
I take it you're not going to blame your brother for that one?
He didn't like Jethro Tull..I remember him saying they were shit live...lying bastard. Serves him right It's quite amazing how those late 60s and early 70s albums still stand the test of time especially when you consider the music spans acoustic crispness to the heavier rock tracks.

Interesting I'm sure I read somewhere that Radiohead cite Cardiacs as an influence which covers both punk and prog.

I see them as different entities, three or maybe four bands. Joy Division left a flawless discography {except perhaps the live side of 'Still'. Then there were the largely Ian songs of early New Order. Then the New Order doing NY Disco and finding their own feet and identity {up to Technique.} Then the Barney lead version, at which point I stopped paying much interest. Never thought he had much of a voice as it was, just about pulls ojj 'Blue Monday'/'Thieves Like Us', where it's fragility was a plus. Thought the offshoots: Revenge, Electronic, The Other Two were all a bit lame. Hooky and the Light are a top night out. I gave the latest NO album a real go but ultimately nowt on it really grabbed me for long. Each to their own but I find it hard to compare/judge competitively summat like 'New Dawn Fades' against 'Confusion'. What do you think of this... I love New Dawn Fades, it’s the highlight of Unknown Pleasures, I probably prefer Closer as an album though. This Moby version’s okay, have you heard this though? Nothing beats the original but I like the way John Frusciante hammers his guitar. He must get through a few playing like that 😀

I love how almost every music thread on here includes a mandatory mention of how someone saw The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in Stoke in the 70s (fucking Jethro Tull always gets crow-barred in somewhere also). I imagine everyone who posts on here to be like Tommy Saxondale

Me and the Mrs walked down the aisle into the church to Elegia, and had "Ceremony" as a first dance, that's just about the only thing we agree on.
Anyway New Order are headlining the blue dot on the Sunday if anyone is interested - they were ace there a few years back (as was johnny marr) - they didn't play much of the disco stuff thank god, and played a mixed set which includes some JD and early NO top tunes such as leave me a lone and your silent face - I can't wait, £68 a ticket - anyone else going ?

You could start a thread about obscure gabba techno and you can bet your arse that SAHB or Tull will be mentioned at some point. Not that there's anything wrong with SHAB (Jethro Tull can fuck right off though).

Appreciate floyd more as I get older For me, discovering Floyd all those years ago was akin to discovering curry. Can’t imagine how I lived without them 🐖🍛 Highly recommend Australian Pink Floyd. Seen em twice, and if you didn't know otherwise it's like being at the original Pink Floyd concert. So much more than a tribute band, just outstanding.

Former Ceramic Hobs frontman and current scriber of salacious tomes, Simon {Morris} says of New Order:
"Christ, what a shitty band. The singer killed himself so they got the drummer's girlfriend in and limped on forever after changing their name to another tasteful Nazi reference, because music is what people do when they have no fucking idea what else to do with their lives and they know it's a world where emotional maturity is verboten and you get given drugs and the terminally clueless can get laid.
I'll try to keep this brief.
MOVEMENT (1981) - hugely embarrassing impersonation of their former selves. Like the X Factor version of Joy Division. Worthless.
POWER, CORRUPTION AND LIES (1983) - a vast improvement with some pretty keyboard melodies - she had by now received some help plugging it in I believe - and three or four OK basslines. Finally one good lyric - "You've caught me at a bad time, so why don't you piss off".
LOW-LIFE (1985) - if you have to endure any of these this is the one to go for. It encapsulates the thing they were trying to go for reasonably well and is competently played. Also has the single best Bernard Sumner line ever which really sums up his deep and meaningful weltanschauung. "Your hair is long and your eyes are blue, guess what I'm gonna do to you".
BROTHERHOOD (1986) - Low-life Redux, boring.
TECHNIQUE (1989) - features the paedophiliac anthem Fine Time amidst one or two 'mature' moves, boring.
REPUBLIC (1993) - the money and drugs had run out so the band who all hated each other by now reformed for this cynical venture. Launch video with cast of Baywatch sums it up. So hard to even remember the title.
GET READY (2001) - the therapists' bills, alimony etc were coming thick and fast for our heroes now and it was time to really 'rock out' with some daring new guitar stylings. Because rock n roll never dies, but the royalties do (thanks Alan). Guest vocals by Bobby Gillespie, no further comment needed.
WAITING FOR THE SIRENS' CALL (2006) - all I'll say about this one is that it has the best and funniest artwork the great Peter Saville ever did for them. I didn't venture past this point. I may be completely insane but I'm not stupid.
Now let's throw it over to the panel. Have some real music instead."
*He went on to recommend a Blue Oyster Cult track. 'Then Came the Last Days of May'.

I always thought Sunrise was just a rip off of 'Monco Chimes'. I do quite like it, should be longer though Sumner nails that choppy rhythm and single note thing on Sunrise. Cracking clip, not seen this in ages I realised on reading Redstriper's post that I'd got my 'Sunrise' and 'Elegia' mixed up. Both great tracks... And my comment about 'Elegia' should've been longer, there's a 17 minute version on youtube, not sure it warrants that.
