Say Carto and Scholesy were to pull a rabbit from a hat in the summer recess, let's face it they owe us one, and sign Lionel Messi.
And further were he to be 100% committed to the Stoke City cause and remain injury free for 46 Championship games how many extra points/league positions do you think he would be worth to us?

I'm going to quietly sit here and see how long it takes someone to use Bojan as an example of why Jones wouldn't play him (and then watch a 26 page Bojan argument inevitably errupt, which in turn will result in an argument about whether or not Jones should be sacked)...............

Jones should stay in the job for 3-5 years, provided he has patience enough for it, and he does not take us through 3-5 relegations. There! I've saved you the trouble of wading through 26 pages. Messi of course would love to play together with Bojan, they're old mates, and vice versa, as would any sane person on this planet, yourself included I would imagine.

Great summary. Might the argument also cover the Pulis years, our £60m deadwood liability, our biblical decline since whacking the WSs 6-1, N'Zonzi/Arnautovic/Shaqiri, Wenger and Arsenal more generally, hooliganism in the 70s and 80s, memories of the Vic, and a video of the goals that got us promoted? If so, we might only need one thread. Back on piste, where might Messi hypothetically live? Bentilee, Abbey Hulton or Knutton? Actually, I say Meir, as it is closer to Argentina.

But how many goals would he actually score if being serviced ( ooo ahhh ) by the current squad?

He looks like one of the great unwashed with that shitty beard. If McClean were to dye his beard and hair they would look like the twin brothers, Jamie and Leo. Our opponents wouldn't know which one they should kick first, and if they pick the wrong one, they might (not) live to regret it.

Messi thrives in the big games. There wouldn’t be any big games for him in the championship so he probably wouldn’t actually score many more than he does now, particularly as teams would put 2 or 3 players on him in every game and the rest of our forwards would still be impotent despite the extra space. He’d get us promoted though.

He could rent a house off Lee Trundle.
And we could put him on penalties. So he'd probably get into double figures.
We'd finish 10th.

It's fair to say he'd make a huge difference to whichever crap team he wanted to play for

Not sure Jones would want him....not because he isn't a brilliant player (he is) but because it would be all about Messi and nothing about the team.
Also at this stage of his career Barca are managing his game time very carefully - including allowing him "rest time" while in the team. Barca can get away with that because of the sheer quality of the rest of the team - we can't.
Messi would certainly win us some games purely through his genius - but I really don't think he would necessarily assure us promotion in a 46 game season. We'd be better off bringing in a group of far less talented players that gel in a balanced side rather than have 10 donkeys and a superstar thoroughbred. Lambert tried that approach with Shaqiri - nowhere near in Messi's class - and it didn't work - too easy for the opposition to snuff out and did nothing for team morale.
A good part of our downfall has been down to buying individuals rather than build a team. I'm actually looking forward to see us build a team - even if individually the quality of the squad goes down.
So (and I know how stupid this sounds) - no thanks Lionel. Hypothetically.

There was a long interview with Suarez recently where he said something along the lines of “sometimes Leo has the ball at his feet and there are so many players between us that I move from my position, I run into space because I think there’s no way he can get the ball through.. then suddenly I look round and the ball is where I was.. it makes it look like a bad pass but it’s my fault because I didn’t trust his ability”
So if a forward like Suarez is sometimes incapable of being on the same wavelength as Messi, whereabouts do we think Afobe might be?

I think he might take a mid table championship team to the play offs or a play off team to automatic promotion.
It's one of the beauties of team sports that no one player can do it on their own.
Funnily enough I think the biggest advantage might be the players that would join us for the opportunity to say they played in the same side as Lionel Messi.
I think he would live on the Westlands, comfortable but not too overtly showy.

And for a quiet pint at the Dick Turpin. Plus he could worship at the shrine that I believe was established in Sneyd Avenue, a few short strides away, to mark the time Paul Randall was a lodger with the parents of a friend of mine.

I have it on good authority that the Commander McClean was on the run from the RUC and escaped to Rosario, and there decided to create a footballer. Like his future son, he got it all wrong and made two instead, but only one was sent back to Irel-, England that is, which caused a lot of confusion in his mind,as young McClean grew up. Only when he is reunited with his better half, will we see the real McClean magic unleashed. The rest of the footballing world may never recover.

It's fair to say he'd make a huge difference to whichever crap team he wanted to play for I would say goalscoring is just a small part of Messi's game, I haven't checked the stats, but I'm pretty sure that he's got more assists than goals. Or at least that was the case earlier in his career where he was more of a winger cum midfielder. I think he still gets a bigger kick out of setting a team mate up than going for number one.
