Said with the class one would expect of Sir Charles. We have made some very bad buys these past few years, but, for all the ups and downs, he was never one of them, as a player or character.
Those whose contracts expire in 2022, on the other hand.....
Ignoring the under-21s with potential, so looking at those who have been bought to be first teamers, those with asterisks have been shown to be poor buys, to my mind, whilst the jury is still very much out on Vokes too. This shows far too high a miss rate in terms of new players on big wages and long contracts in the last year or two.

Thanks Charlie. You have shown over the years, more passion for the team and supporters than the rest of them put together. I do so wish you could have been allowed to stay, even for just one more season. You were such an integral part of the team and I will miss you so much.

I gave Charlie absolute dogs abuse for the Brighton penalty, not for the miss, that happens, but for the lumbering way he jogged towards the rebound like a fcuking oil tanker and consequently failed to score an open goal. It did pretty much sum up our season though.
Best wishes Charlie and thanks for memories (& laughs)

I would imagine there are quite a few not out of contract who will, or will be told their futures lie elsewhere..Yes all clubs have transfers which don't work out for whatever reason, we simply have had way too many very costly ones & can simply not afford too many more.

Praise the fucking lord finally, somebody fucks Haugaard off.
He's been stealing a living for far too long.
Thanks for the memories Charlie, but I think it's the right time for both parties.
Fletcher....meh, we all knew it was coming - he's had a fantastic career but it's not worked out with us for whatever reason.
Good signs very early on here IMO.

I’m sad to see Charlie go What a wonderful passer of the ball..... when will we see a player who can pass a ball as well as Charlie again at this club? I wonder. I’ve loved having him here. I’m happy that his last performance was a masterclass against Leeds I wish him all the very best.

All the best Charlie, perhaps he'll get a player/coach role at his beloved Dundee and a chance to get them back up- he'd look like Zidane in the Scottish Championship.
As for the other two, don't let the door hit you (or 'yous' as McClean likes to spell it 😁)

Quality player when given time on the ball. Problem is now he needs too much time. Wish him well has been a model pro but not part of where we're heading. Why where are we heading ?, he was the only player we had who on his day could produce something out of nothing, we missed him badly when he got injured who is going to take his place ?

All the best Charlie. You'll live long in the memory. A lot longer than those overpaid tossers like ndiaye imbula and wimmer.

Charlie always tried 100% and was very likeable. Time to move on but will always enjoy the love he earned at Stoke.

He was an excellent signing really after you think about it.
Some great moments and I echo a previous reply; I am really happy Charlie played for Stoke City.
I hope he gets a run out in the final game so proper a send off can be given from both sides.
Best of luck Charlie, hopefully at a club where supporters can actually spell your fair simple name correctly!

Its down to the manager to find someone to take his place, thats his job. If he felt he couldn't replace him then he would have kept him here i guess.

Ta Charlie,
your first 3 seasons were fantastic, your last 4 were shite, but that United winner will live long in the memory.

Just a bit sad about this. He could be awesome, he could be very good, or he could be more than a bit iffy, but he was never, ever dull, and he would always make things happen. I'm glad we had Charlie at our club. Hope he does well wherever he ends up. What you said......again!!! 👍🏼

Possibly on his way with Rowett in charge Made a positive impact once given the chance by Jones, unfortunately we didn’t see too much of him after his injury Great character, very good player He will be missed

One of the last of a 'dying breed' of proper footballers who play with passion and appreciate what it means to us fans. Even on a bad day Charlie would come over and show his love for the supporters, and always gave it his all.
All the best for the future

I'll always remember his penalty against Brighton. At the time I was seething but quite bizarrely, over time I've grown to laugh at it, a lot. We were crap last season with all of them playing their fair part and if you are going down, you might aswell do it in slapstick style. Sorry Charlie, but it does make me laugh (now). I don't look back on this with as much amusement. It was arguably the moment that all but confirmed we were going down and if he'd let Jese take, I'm sure he would have scored. It has stained my memory of Charlie, but I do acknowledge his passion for our club and he did have a few great seasons with us. All the best Charlie. Looking forward to the autobiography!

Cheers Charlie, I’ll never forget that headlock! Right up there with Joselu hugging the ref and Huth ripping that West Ham defender out of the wall!
happy times!

I openly admit, I've been a critic of Charlie on here a lot, but I don't think anyone can deny at all, he was a 'DNA' player. A full blooded club player who could have some absolutely amazing moments, and have some royal stinkers cough *brighton* cough. I'm sad to see him go. As for Fletcher and Haugaaed, ermmm, not so much. Were these ones all out of contract? Certainly the three easiest to let go if Jones wants to start the clear out. Yeah - looks like they've got rid of all the ones they could, but it doesn't make much of a dent, does it?! 2019 Haugaard Adam Fletcher (+ Williams)
2020 Federici Pieters Cameron Bojan Diouf
2021 Butland Shawcross Imbula
2022 Bauer Edwards BMI Souttar Tymon Wimmer McClean Ndiaye Allen Clucas Berahino Ince Vokes Batth Verlinden Ngoy
2023 Etebo Sorensen
Unknown Campbell Woods Afobe
Not the dent we are looking for, but it's a good start and must save c£4m in wages. Can see apart from Federici the 2020 crew will be gone for small transfer fees so as to get them off the wage bill. There will be more and seeing this list actually makes me feel we'll be able to get rid of players more easily than I'd thought before.

Hard one for me , Nathan deserves all our support but this is one I dont Agree with id have kept Charlie but it’s all part of the rough and smooth of changing direction so he goes with real thanks for being a proper stoke player and provider of some brilliant memories , he can leave with head held high and will always be welcome back

Probably a massive overaction considering this was inevitable, but I'm absolutely gutted. Proper old school footballer with the perfect eye for a killer pass. One of the few players who really gives a shit and is more driven by the love of the game than the money. Thanks for the memories Charlie. Proud to say that you've played for Stoke. Absolute gent. I really hope you get the send off you deserve on Sunday and all the best in life!

Ive mostly enjoyed his time with us but sadly, for more than a couple of seasons Charlie has been towing a caravan.
And so, no matter how good you are at passing a football - if you are a passenger without it,
you are a liability too.
On that metaphore - for a long time on here ( using a former name) I have talked about a transit van full of Stoke players that needed loading up and driving away.
Sentimentality aside, Looking at the title of the thread at very least, three of those I've thought surplus for quite some time now
- are actually embarking upon said 'transit van'.

Always liked Charlie’s attitude, always tried to get something going. Some decent goals, not least the last minute winner at West Brazil. Some mental that was. There was a school of thought this time last year that we only got relegated due to him having a fairly shite few months. Plainly bollocks. I enjoy listening to him on the radio. I’d have a pint with him.
