In commercial terms it's quite straight forward. Cardiff agreed to buy him for an agreed fee and have signed a contract to that amount. They should then instantly insure their "asset" just as you would buying a car.
A tragic accident has happened but Cardiff are still 100% liable for the contract they signed and whether or not their insurers pay out will depend on the quality of their insurance arrangements.
Sala would (?) like any professional (I hope!) have personal life assurance either privately or negociated as part of his contract. His family should benefit from that. GoFundMe and other charitable giving really shouldn't be needed in either case.

I can foresee this becoming very messy. The aircraft insurers may well be able to deny any claims. IF Cardiff hadinsurance their insurers could well argue with the Planes insurers, and the owners if they can find out who they are. If Ibbotson only has a private pilots license and the flight was chartered it would be illegal. What a mess. If only he had taken a proper commercial flight.
