Some are creative, some are designed to entertain and some are just crap. I can say hand on heart I've never been tempted to part with hard earned money on the basis of a celeb plugging something. Even the chimps doing their level best with PG Tips. Anyone ever been drawn in.

Everybody has including you.
Which brand shall I buy, the one I've heard of or the one I haven't?

I never really remember what any of the ads are about as I don't really pay any attention to them. We normally just try to watch stuff that we've recorded so we can skip the ad breaks and get back to the actual programme. We certainly don't usually go out and buy any items based on a TV advert.

They work on me. I went out in the boxing day sales and bought 17 televisions.
Actually I'm the ad man's nightmare. I'm really good at remembering ads I see, except for what they're actually advertising. And I studiously avoid buying anything I've seen advertised (and remembered). If it needs an advert to sell it, then it'll be overpriced and there's bound to be other alternatives to buy that are better and cheaper.

I'm similar to Deeside in that I can't even remember what they are trying to push. Mostly change channels temporarily anyway which doesn't help.

It's rare that I've actually seen something on an advert and then gone out an bought it - but as lordb says when you're staring at a wall of products you tend to go for one you recognise - and that would usually because of the adverising.

I can think of many companies, goods and services that I've actively avoided due to being pissed off at an advert.
I will never use Aviva based on that "Tinman" advert.
I will always avoid Sainsburys from now on due to that really snotty kid singing "You got da bewsic id yew" on that recent Christmas advert.
Whatever that "Gold for the price of silver" furniture company is can go and fuck itself too.

Some adds are very clever some are memorable for being funny or witty the problem is I never remember what the product is they are advertising

Some might resist the idea that they've ever bought a product because of advertisiing but most have for the reasons lordb give above. The messages in a tv advert aren't always apparent but the brain subconsciously recognises and stores information such as logo shapes, colours, hook lines etc along with the more obvious things like the company's name which, like it or not, does affect your familiarity with a brand or product.

The most effective adverts are the really shit ones..usually Bank adverts..they do something neurologically and remain in the short term memory the longest.
A huge amount of money is poured into advertising because it is effective and afffects EVERYONE subliminally.
And the people it affects the most are the people that say they're not affected by it.
They're usually the easiest to influence because they deny they're affected by it.

Have never watched an advert or seen a billboard at a match and thought I must buy that .
What gets me every time is the offers at the end of supermarket aisles. In the main it's chocolate or crisps but I fall for it every single time.
My main gripe now is the PC adverts. The Mccain chip ' family' advert is particularly sickening.

Try watching any programs broadcast by sky during the day Eg only fools you get 5 mins of only fools then 7 mins of ads. If there's anything I want to watch I record it now then I can skip through the ads

If there's anything I want to watch I record it now then I can skip through the ads[/quote Yes we do the same - if we want to watch anything we record them so we don't have to sit through all the ads. My wife used to sit right through Corrie, Emmerdale or any "womens progs" but even she has got to the point where she refuses to watch the ads. I have got to the stage where I almost never watch anything "live" on any of the commercial channels. If it's unavoidable and I have to watch something with ads I go and make a drink or go to the loo whilst the ads are on. On the odd occasion I have seen any ads lately they are either so obscure or stupid that I can't remember what they are trying to sell anyway.

I've never been drawn in by TV adverts. Aren't they supposed to be perfectly timed for rushing into the kitchen to make another quick cup of tea and grab some cold leftovers or a bag of crisps just in time for the second half? That's what happens in our house anyway.

I hate the PC ads as well, it's so contrived and forced. Anything involving a group of people at a party has to have someone of every race. Anything involving fitness has to have a disabled athlete. And everything has to have two blokes getting off with each other. Salopstick told me he likes the last one but still.
Anyway.
What really fingers my rectum is the number of adverts that feature really shit covers of erstwhile decent tracks: invariably, slowed tempo, whiny warbly female vocal, single acoustic guitar or piano. It's a pandemic. I noticed it ages ago and have counted about 20 times this has happened.

Same went for the speakers for the stereo. They can keep trotting out as much as they want but it's falling on deaf ears here. Then again it's keeping ITV afloat.

That's what we all say, including me, but the only thing that differentiates a lot of products is the wrapper/box it's in. Why choose one box and not another? Is it just free will? Or does the subliminal effect of advertising have some effect? The billions of pounds poured into adverts suggests the latter. But there's exceptions to every rule !!

That's what happens in our house anyway. The trouble is, though, Auntie, these days the ad breaks are so infuriatingly long that there's no need to rush - eg. if I've got an attack of the munchies I can literally make a plate of sandwiches in the break time. I DETEST adverts, and exactly as some other folks have said, we tend to record things & watch later so that we can skip the ads. If we're watching sth live, the remote's always to hand and the sound gets zapped before any ads can start..... and the books or crosswords get picked up again.

TV ads promoting after shave and perfumes. What’s the point if you can’t actually smell the scent they want you to buy ?
Very odd. So are you if you buy it on the back of a tv ad 🤔

I agree with PLB. Every advertisement nowadays seems to be selling Diversity. It’s not possible to advertise anything without having some,or usually all minority groups represented. It’s the Most memorable thing about the advert.
