I know that this season has been hugely frustrating for us, and certain sections of our support have been calling for Rowetts head here on the oatcake, but I still believe we have got the right man for the job, if not necessarily the right people upstairs to lead this club forward.
Ok, we had an appalling start to this season - but we have only lost twice in our last 11 games (W5 D4 L2) including going 6 unbeaten away from home (when's the last time we've done that? Possibly in the Gudjon if not the Macari days), we have tightened up considerably with only 2 conceded in 7, thanks to GR getting our shape behind the ball sorted and going with 3 through the middle to crowd out teams. Yes, we have lost some of our attacking verve with the emphasis on being hard to beat but, with centre-halves who turn slower than a hgv, we would be exposed if we tried to go for the throat week in week out.
On top of this, GR has revitalised Berahino (ok, he hasn't kicked on from breaking his duck quite how we all wanted, partly from being played either deeper or out wide when he's started) - TP, Sparky and Lambo couldn't get a tune out of him, yet GR has got him working his bollocks off, particularly off the ball.
He's also come into a dressing room with a contagious losing mentality and stacked with a bunch of aging old pros who are halfway to the knackers yard and lazy moody shirkers who couldn't give 2 fucks if they tried and, slowly, is starting to turn things around. We all wanted things to click instantly and, at times, it feels we are taking 2 steps forwards (say winning at Norwich) then going 1 back (Birmingham), but we are slowly improving and, with the right signings in Jan (namely a centre-half who's decently quick and can read the game well - giving the midfielders more freedom to play higher up, a physical midfielder who can bully teams on and off the ball and another striker who is strong, savvy and quick enough to play up top as a 1 if needed), we can push on.
Also, if nothing else can make you feel some sort of sympathy for rowett - just look at the pair of clowns he has to work under/with.
I'm not saying that GR is above criticism (I for one wish that he would give the kids such as Campbell and Sorensen more of a look in rather than sticking the old guard, such as Fletcher and Crouch on the bench) but he's a youngish manager with a very good track record at this level and, given time, I'm confident he will turn us around.

Lambert made us harder to beat, but the football was awful.
People used a solid defense to argue on his behalf but it all cane at the cost of any attacking threat.
This seems like deja vue

We musn't forget the mess that Rowett took over and it was always going to take a few months before we started to get our act together. Losers don't turn into winners overnight. He's doing a good job in my opinion so we should get behind him.

Its all about balance, he went the attacking route to start with and quickly realised that it wasn't the way to go, so he's doing now what he should have done in the first place, get solid at the back and build from there, now we see if he's worth the money, I don't think he needs a defence on the whole, he makes some iffy decisions now and then, Crouch today for example, but I don't think he's doing a bad job given the mess that he walked in to, those that thought it would be a cake walk with the squad that we had were deluded.

But he is shit scared of attacking! He fills the team with water carriers and bricklayers whilst the one player who could unpick a defence and provide Afobe with the service to score the goals we need sits on his arse on the bench. Instead we get players who take four touches to control the ball and by the time they have the ball under control the opposition have got back in position. It is fucking painful to watch at times! If I see Crouch lumber on one more time.......

I'm not sure that calling it "The mess that was left over" from the prem is a good enough makeweight in this argument, At the same time that there were a few shattered egos, He inherited a team that could walk into almost all championship sides. With a budget far exceeding anyone else.
Peoples problem with him is that he's serving up shit football AND shit results.
And yes, you can harp on about "whisper quietly we haven't been beaten in X games" But that means very little when those scores are 0-0 and the likes of West brom are putting 4 past Leeds or whoever.

No, as you say he has spent a lot but he still had to overhaul a squad in a massive rut and get them playing, money doesn't always make that easy.

I’m finding it difficult to defend him considering we’ve retained most of our squad, are promotion favourites and have probably the biggest budget in the league.
Says it all that I genuinely almost forgot we were playing today, that’s how utterly wank things are at the moment.

Rowetts tactics and player choice are totally inept..he chose to play Mclean today despite all the furore of the last week out of position..he is the most left footed player ever and he chose to play him on the right where Edwards was racing forward and they were just getting in each others way and at the same time playing Diouf on the left where he can neither kick with his left or right..no service to Afobe again and the midfield were again negative in their passing..The 12m Berahino again missed a chance he should be putting away and i can not understand why he is being given this latest applaud.Yes accepted Crouchie unlucky in the end with the goal line clearance but if it wasnt for Jacks 2 worldies we could have lost a game that we clearly could of won but for the tactical incompetrnce of our manager and very expensive backroomers.

The Coates family aren't wealthy enough to provide the funds for Rowett to build a team that he'd got out there with real attacking intent with.
Mind you, neither are the Man City owners wealthy enough for it.
It's strange though, watching our build-up play like a more limited version of an Arsenal circa 2002 team. It could have been really positive, the problem is it stopped being effective largely somewhere around 2006/2007.
It doesn't have to be this way though, if you look at the "shitshow" we were last season in the premier league, you can find a championship equivalent who did manage to end up staying up though in Leeds. Leeds were as equally shit as we were last year, and still have a significantly worse squad than our own.
My hope is he scrapes us through to promotion, and then realising that there isn't enough money in the world to make this style of football work in the premier league right now the right thing is done when the time comes next season.
- - -
The only thing I can see in Rowetts defence, is that when someone said to him Stoke were a premier league team last year, he got it confused with the Evo Stik Premier and thinks everyone will be delighted to just survive in the championship.
We could so easily be several points better off than we are, yet at the same time we're incredibly fortunate not to be 7/8 points worse off than we are so that's neither here nor there.

Why does every basic stoke fan default to taking the manager's word 10 games in even though his arbitrary fucking shit record? Is it decades of royal brainwashing, or just fucking lackadaisical malaise that nobody really gives a damn after realizing the club is barely going to avoid a second relegation? Rowett is worse than Lambert defensively and a poor mans Hughes making us half attempt going forward. He's slow to sub, has terrible tactics and blows money on one legged irish stallions. Fucking joke of a thread. This club is going backwards slowly not forwards at all. All he's done this season is waste money and scrape draws with enough money to have milwall get promoted. Fuck off.

6 points off the top of the table and 6 points off relegation. Rowett wise to be sensible at the moment. We have a mid table championship squad with Jack Butland. Those back to back wind that we need would bolster confidence What table are you looking at !!!!!!

In Rowetts defence he's got God awful defensive options. I love Shawcross but he's struggling, robably terminally. Whoever is to blame for that is one thing, but Rowett now has us as hard to beat and you can see the difference in the players. Particularly Jack. We need to stay "in touch" so we can sign some decent players in January. Afobe and Ince are disappointing at the moment but there's time. We used to give players time to adjust back in the day. We having fielding 5, 6 or 7 new outfield faces this year, plus Berahino, who might as well be. They are at least starting to look more like a team.

Had Nottingham converted several very good chances we would have conceded 3 or 4 The defence have Jack to thank and possibly deflect weaknesses at the back Yes the defence look more organised, but they have an important role to get the ball forward quickly and not give the opposition time to regroup Players ahead of them need to helping out a bit more

Not impressed with results, (1 win in 5 and a shockingly bad 5 wins in 17), and I'm not impressed with performances where we have 1-2 shots on goal each game. I said a while back he should go, nothing much has changed. We are in the bottom half of the league still

Doing exactly what his CV said he would do Keep us in the championship , if that’s what he was recruited for doing a solid job as we are above the running rate to consolidate
Obviously if the brief was different he and the team that recruited him are so far short of target there are vert very few places any of them would still be in a job and even less in professional football .

In Rowetts defence he signed 10 players? Or somewhere near that? I wanted Rowett as manager, and was chuffed with his appointment but that team is now virtually is own. The players just don’t fit that system, but the worry is, fans can see it but Rowett can’t!

He brought in two players on the slide in their careers who can't run very fast, so they don't suit what he wanted to do and now we have reverted to ultra defensive conservative football which is still failing to win games. It is shit, shit, shit, with the resources he had available it is pure madness to describe what Rowett has done so far as anything other than miserable failure. Bye bye Norwich, 11 points ahead already

Jury out for me , I struggle to warm to him and as yet don't really see how he is an upgrade on Lambert but he has in recent games tightened us up which was essential if we are to recover where we were . On the negative side he has spent 30m on three forward players who are not really delivering as yet. If he can sort that then we have a chance in this open league . Given what he has spent anything less than top 6 is a bad season in my view .
