How long will the police have this perception that Stoke are all hooligans from a decade ago.
Yesterday tried to find a pub in Hillsborough, only told by coppers that we probably wouldnt be allowed in any, theres no beer in the ground as the police dont want Stoke fans drinking. Luckiky we went in a wetherspoons and had no issues.
Police had to be called in from other local forces, holidays and days off were cancelled. The amount of police presence was highest ive seen at a game for a long time, this included tram escorts to the ground. The police weren't 'standard' officers either they were geared up, shoulder, elbow pads, helmets the lot.
It makes it shit for us away fans that the police are already up for something to kick off.
Granted, the preston incident doesn't help matters
But the "few dickheads at away" that everyone talks about aren't hooligans, they throw beer about, shout at a few stewards. However if someone in a police uniform got a little bit handy with them they'd shit themselves instantly. Theres no need for the overkill of police numbers and having the response unit ready

It’s reallt bad. I got the train and there must have been 50 police at the station on the platform and 5 of them escorted one lad for singing off the platform. Have to justify the position right? The train was subsequently delayed by ten mins.
All taxpayers money may I add. Train delays circa 200 pound a minute and 50 police to escort one lad.
We are human beings and their attitude towards people is so aggressive, it’s disgusting really.

I've seen it all on trains and in away grounds - a lo of these people are thick as pig shit vermin who can't handle ale. They reap what they sow.

Nothing much. Just Rowetts barmy army.
I’ll agree in part with what you say, but until the police turned up in numbers everyone was civil enough.
The train was very busy and again the train was fine.
I do think the presence is over stated. I was in a pub with derby fans before the game and stoke fans. No issues.
Suppose is it a few or the many when it comes to the stoke fans?

The no alcohol in the stadium is across the board for every visiting club to Hillsboro
The amount of police at the station was due to Stoke and Derby using the station and the excellent bar attached to it
Scrape the surface and the truth is out there

They're dickheads, they absolutely love it and you can see them champing at the bit for something to kick off. The aggressive way they bark at people is terrible, the belligerent way they stick cameras right in your face and the way they kettle people around is, I'm sure, done on purpose by a significant element within their ranks to wind people up so they get to whack them or spray them.
They're fucking bullies at football. Not all of them obviously, and the majority of non-football policing I've seen has been great, but you have to think of the mentality of the type of person who would volunteer to specialise as a riot copper. They want exactly the same outcome as the hooligans do for the adrenaline and to justify their own existence, they're just cleverer about it.

The no alcohol in the stadium is across the board for every visiting club to Hillsboro I don't know if thats right or wrong. However I was told by a copper that "they arent doing beer in the ground for today's game. Its a police decision, I dont usually do Wednesday games and I thought that all pottieries blokes were decent...but you've got a bad reputation" and proceeded to laugh. He wasnt being a dick like. It genuinely felt like he had no idea why beer was banned. However I remember in the pepper spray thread. Boother said he heard a copper say something, and got called a liar by most of the replies. So I fully expect that someone will say Ive made the above up

Yesterday was a weird one. The police presence was as noticeable as it has been for years. First pub we got to was a Wetherspoon by John Lewis. About 10:30 ish. Sat down with some pints. Within seconds three uniformed police officers walk over and start giving us the third degree: "Where you from lads?", "you hear for the football?", "where you going after?", "you come on the train?", "are you going straight the ground". Guilty of being over 18 in a pub?
I half expected them to just keep us in the pub after that because it was clear that they thought there was a hooligan element.
After the game, I took the earlier train and the station was heaving. 100 police officers minimum.
I didn't see any actual trouble so either the police presence worked or it was something of nothing.

Welcome to South Yorkshire. For some reason the police there have always been very heavy handed.

It’s way over the top. We do have a few dickheads in our support but not enough to warrant that much police presence.

If it's not the third degree, call it twenty questions, an interrogation. I'm allowed to sit in a pub mate. I'm 28.

I was on the platform yesterday when said supporter was escorted away as he was trying to taunt Derby fans on the same platform. This lad and a couple of his mates were stood within in yards of us at the ground obviously had a few a beers. We all said it was a matter of time before one of them were escorted out or nicked. Anyway overheard a police officer on the platform saying he was escorted away after numerous warnings as there were Derby fans on same platform an they didn't want a situation where innocent people could get hurt. I can honestly say that the police and stewards were some of the most helpful I have come across at an away game.

Can't let the truth get in the way of another good police and steward bashing thread on here. You're getting in the way of us getting the violins out for all the innocent angels that follow Stoke away these days!

I have said many times on here the whole Saturday afternoon pantomime played out each week up and down the country of lads on a day out jumping up and down in front of lines of stewards, riot police on overtime, and the media waiting to write a story is somehow self serving. If everyone just took one step back everything would be fine.

No problems for the SWS. We went in a pub about a mile from the ground. Mainly Wednesday fans but you'd kind of expect that. Had a good couple of hours there. Got train back with hundreds of Derby fans that was held just outside Derby Station for 45 mins. Good lads as it turned out. Gotta have a chat when you're going nowhere. I've been going away for years and had problems on less than a handful of times. Behave well and generally it'll be fine.

The Police presence had nothing to do with Stoke fans or to do with football. They had been informed that a hate crime had been commited and they weren't taking any chances !!

Didn't seem to be a large amount of 'lads out yesterday to justify the amount of police. Have to say the bloke in question on the train platform deserved a nicking and was trying to provoke the Derby fans that were about to get off the train.

I live in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. I am a Stokie but i do watch the Owls a few times each season. South Yorkshire Police are always the same. Home and away fans are treated the same, all are treated like shit. All pubs are monitored by the Police. Footy fans are hated by them, could have something to do will the Hillsborough disaster. Around Hillsborough corner fans are made to remove hats and hoods. South Yorkshire Police have got a terrible reputation and enjoy bossing people around. I left Sheffield at 8.30 Saturday night and Police where all over the place waitìng for trouble to start. It was also St Leger race meeting in Doncaster and if you have ever been you will know what issues that brings. Pissed up looneys running aroung fighting wearing cheap suits from Tesco. These fuckers are 10 times worse than any footy fans, but their behaviour is looked up on as high spirits.

I was actually under no obligation to tell them anything. Was I under arrest? No. Had I committed a crime? No. I could have quite easily told them to sling their hook, Sarge. We all know how that would have gone though, don't we?

Went to the Railway pub about 10 mins walk from Ground, decent pub with about 50/50 Stoke/ Wednesday fans no problems in there . Agree big police presence but didn't see any sign of inappropriate behaviour? The one's I spoke to seemed helpful and friendly. My daughter is at Uni up there she came over on tram to meet me she said everyone friendly and was helped out by Wednesday fans to find where she was meeting me. She said Tram home was generally friendly apart from one Knob head Stoke fan trying to kick it off.... Thankfully lots of Stoke and Wednesday fans on there who were actual grown ups and not spoilt kids ! All in all had an enjoyable day out
