Promotion and probably a top 8 finish has gone as far as I am concerned. The frailty of our defence has and will see to that. There is no magic wand now, the signs were there for a while. Most thought they would cope in this division they cant. The same liability defenders will keep trotting out until January. In this i include Shawcross,Pieters,BMI,Wiliams all massive over rated and not up to the speed of this league. Then the game will be up for us for this season..

Given their starts last season I’ll bet Fulham and Villa fans were saying similar ...Both got to play off final
It’s poor but let’s see mate

It would be easier to accept if we'd been playing well, and the results just hadn't gone our way.....there'd be hope that it would turn around if that was the case!!!
But we've actually looked shit....
Worryingly shit!!!

I hope your right mate but I think Fulham and Villa to a degree had far more in defence than our utter shambles. I don't care what anyone says the defending this season has reminded me of the Stephen Tweed mob under Brian Little.

Why would anyone be getting their hopes up anyway? We lost yet again in the last game.

You do realise, that the high & lofty position of 8th, is a humongous 6 points in front of us, with a piddly, paltry 40 games too go?
So in every block of 8 games, we have the massively unachievable task of reeling in a decidedly unsurmountable task of 1.2 points per game, or an equally astonishingly difficult 0.15 points per game.
You are right, we have had it, roll-on 2019/2020.

So on the basis of your pessimistic assessment of our performance to date we should all give up hope?
Thanks for that I'll have a think...
Nah...we are 6 games in with a new manager and squad finding its feet. I'll remain optimistic if that's ok by you.

I never had high hopes to start with....more realistic ones. We are pretty much where I thought we would be. Where we will be at the end of the season is what counts. I initially thought we could scrape the play offs, now I’ve adjusted that mid to lower table. Hope I’m wrong and we go on some record breaking run....but I’m struggling to see evidence to support that.

I always look on the side of things will & must improve but after 6 league games & a full pre season & bringing in players of his so called choice i think its plain to see that this side is not going to be good enough for even a top half finish. I will wait for Rowett & this squad of players to prove me wrong & i will gladly hold my hands up & say i was wrong but i am not holding my breath.

I think automatic promotion from the Championship was/is always for the clubs who've got a decent squad and a established 1st team playing well together who hit the ground running, they gotta avg 2 points a game and maybe lose only 4 games all season or numbers to that effect.
This season, Stoke were never going to be one of those 2 teams. Going from a team who needed 40 points to stay up to suddenly needing 80+ for automatic promotion doesn't happen easily and with staff/player changes its even harder.
If the team can get itself together by mid-October they can aim for the play-offs. If they don't get it together by early december then its going to get "squeeky bum time" for GR knowing the board feel play-offs is the target, a number of players will wobble even more about staying etc etc etc
I genuinely think the teams performances/playing style will improve by the end of October. Doesn't mean there wont be issues, and the next 4 weeks are soooo important. However, fail to get to the play offs, especially if the team don't improve and it really will get tough for the club for next season, proper longer term trouble sadly.

You can't manufacture pace and dynamism though, this is a division that requires energy, pace and dynamism. Derren Brown couldn't conjure that out of these players.

Yes it's been a shit start but Nothings decided yet in this league - next 2 or 3 games will be telling though......as they are sticking with Rowett for now we'll just have be patient and see what transpires - I hope we turn the corner and start to achieve potential (or near to) BUT I equally hope that if things continue to slide or do not improve sufficiently then the board won't stand by and fiddle while Rome burns.....

Strangely feel a bit backwards to what you said, but not sure why. With a few of the new players I feel there is room for pace and dynamism, mostly Etebo and Ince. Afobe and Berahino need some service which will improve as Etebo continues to get settled (and if we bench Allen). Plus I still have some hope that Clucas and Woods will improve that as well. I think we can manage a push up the table (to playoffs), but I have no idea how we sort our defense. Peiters is just plain crap at this point, maybe Clucas slots in there though. I do think right back we can manager with Cuco and Bauer. Simply put the only central defender I have any amount of hope in now is BMI and he is limited. I have no possible idea how we cope with any forward who as pace or a smart forward who makes runs in behind us. We will continue to ship goals and that is demoralizing for the whole rest of the team on the field and in the changing room.

Given their starts last season I’ll bet Fulham and Villa fans were saying similar ...Both got to play off final It’s poor but let’s see mate Their approach was different though. Fulham nurtured their talented players, while Villa brought in leadership and experience from Terry and Whelan and also held on to the one outstanding talent they have. We have just settled for the status quo, using by and large the exact same players that took us down while buying players whose quality is not better than the ones we already have.

We will continue to ship goals and that is demoralizing for the whole rest of the team on the field and in the changing room. I'm just going on what I've seen so far, where bar Hull every team has been 'at it' more than us, culminating in the game against WBA where they literally skated around us when they had the ball and when we had the ball our attacks were slow, predictable and ponderous. Like walking with flippers in treacle. I just don't see any cure for this in the short term. We will win a few games when our better players show up and our defenders stop their collective nervous breakdown but the side that the self proclaimed Championship expert, Rowett and the recruitment team have put together seems wholly unsuited to the job in hand.

Well quite a few seem to agree with me whilst the other half, probably just like they did last season will bury there heads in the sand and miraculously think things will improve. If one of the oiks who still think were ok please explain to me how things will improve in that defence.
Trust me it wont, by the time we get to xmas and every decent striker with a semblance of pace or movement has stuck it in our net you might agree.
