Probably about right, although we'll know more after 8 or 9 games. Just can't really understand why we haven't gone that extra mile and filled the 5th loan slot. We look so light in creativity/goal power - and we're already about 10 points behind before August's out. It just seemed to demand some kind of statement addition. After a start like we've had maybe no one fancies joining us

No offence but I think some of the opinions about The Villa in this thread are based on league tables and newspaper drivel
1, Villa are selling all their best players - really ?
2, Villa are the strongest team in the league - strong looking squad but unbalanced due to SB's use of it
3, so far we have won 2 and drew 3
Won 3-1 at Hull, expected win but made really hard work of it for an hour
Won 3-2 at home v Wigan, needed a last gasp winner to see them off, they were gutted to get nothing and rightly so !
Drew 2-2 v Brentford at-home we robbed them, good side they are
Drew 1-1 at Ipswich, crap performance v a crap side even when they went down to 10 men
Drew 1-1 home v Reading ,played quite well but once again failed to see off 10 and last minute goal made us pay
Oh and the abject surrender at Burton on Tues
Just goes to show we ain't that much better than you if indeed we are

Everyone except QPR look better than us, and unsurprisingly QPR and ourselves have one thing in common (apart from being rubbish and easy to beat)....Mark Hughes! Hull look better than us do they? And Rotherham?

It's early days yet, but based on what I've seen so far, I don't fancy us to finish above any of these sides: Leeds Middlesbrough Aston Villa Brentford West Brom I’d go with that list plus maybe Swansea of what we’ve seen so far. Everything can change of course but it’s difficult to imagine Boro not being in one of the top two spots isn’t it. Everything else is up for grabs.

I thought Wigan looked a tad better than us too! Wigan looked like cannon fodder until we gifted them a goal and we capitulated, after we had a perfectly good goal ruled out and had completely dominated the game. Wigan will be so far behind us come May they'll nearly be smelling our farts.

Both Leeds and Boro showed that they are streets ahead of last night. Brentford and Wigan have already outplayed us, it's not about who is better than us - nearly everyone is - we need to hope that there are 3 teams worse come May.

Both looked dangerous from set pieces and that was just about the only quality on show in 95 minutes.

Both looked dangerous from set pieces and that was just about the only quality on show in 95 minutes. It was a high class game with Boro cancelling out a very good Leeds team. We saw how Leeds ruthlessly exposed us and could have had 9 or 10. Not against Boro, they worked so hard for each other to gain another clean sheet.

Wide open,as usual for this league.

Yesterday’s game was lightning quick but lacked real quality. Sooner or later Leeds will slow down you’d like to think surely they can’t keep that workrate up all season. Boro like us are workmanlike but have better physical presence but we have better players.

I thought at the start of the season we were fortunate that two standout teams Wolves and Fulham got promoted to be replaced by clearly inferior Swansea and WBA both with rookie managers. It seemed that what was left was nothing special. Leeds were to be fair were a bit of an unknown under Bielsa and I was shocked at how easily they took us apart. But having watched a fair bit of the first five fixtures I still maintain that there is nothing special, no real stand out teams like Wolves and Fulham. Looking at the team that Rowett has assembled, all grunt and no finesse or attacking cutting edge, I honestly don't fancy our chances for top 6. Automatic promotion is fanciful, you need to win at least 25 games, we won't do that with our attacking options. It was very odd we din;t strengthen in this department, a front 3 of Ince Afobe and McClean looks a lot short of whats required. TBH our window has left me a little bemused and disappointed.

I watched the game and you are right about the quality, watching Leeds I wondered how they managed to rinse us and wasn't really impressed with any of their players and Boro is a classic TP side organised tough to beat but lacking upfront. Aden Flint looks a great bit of business for 7m, we needed just that type of player and I thought Rowett knew this league. I don't think there is much between us and Boro except for the quality of the managers. I have little time for Pulis but his tactical awareness of how Leeds play and how to counteract it was in stark contrast to Rowett's caught in the headlights performance at Elland Rd.

Every team in the championship , with a goalscorer , looks better than us
For the obvious reason ...they have a goal scorer
It seems every year PC writes a cheque big enough to sign a goalscorer .Then for reasons nobody can understand ,hands over the cheque , to scholes carto and AN Other to spend wastefully
Truly bizarre
Truly beyond all comprehension
Why not have a different transfer team ?? And hand over massive amounts of money every year to people more competent??

And hand over massive amounts of money every year to people more competent?? Afobe looks like the man the management have hand-picked, to be fair. Very doubtful it has anything to do with Carto. Rowett knew he could get Afobe done at £12m very early in the window, and prioritised that over a more convoluted chase for Gayle. And Afobe's record is very good at this level. 28 goals at a goal every 160 minutes since 2014. www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/wolves-derby-benik-afobe-nuno-14437795Kevin Phillips has revealed that he instructed then Derby manager Paul Clement to sign Benik Afobe if the Rams were to achieve promotion to the Premier League “When I first joined Derby two-and-a-half years ago with Paul Clement, we sat down and I remember clearly he asked what it would take to get promoted - and I said to go and sign Benik Afobe,” Phillips said in his Shropshire Star column.
“Paul thought it would cost £15m to sign him and I remarked that’d be the difference between going up or not.
“That’s how highly I rate the guy at this level – he will guarantee you goals with the right service.

Early days yet to say who’s better than us. Not a good start. However, I’d be a bit concerned if we went off to a flyer as many teams fail to sustain that. After the next 6 games we’ll have a much better idea, I think.

"How many times" you ask/say with mock exasperation. You need to get over yourself. Etebo isn't the managers player. Bauer isn't the managers player. I doubt very much that Ashley Williams was the managers player either. Do you need help with the previous managers as well?

I hope the irony of you telling someone else to ‘get over themselves’ isn’t lost on you Dave. Bauer wasn’t the manager’s player, no. The fact that he was signed five months before he arrived is the giveaway there. The manager has said that he had Etebo scouted five or six times after the pizza boys brought him to him and okayed the signing himself. He’s also played him in the last three games. So while not identified by him he hardly seems unhappy about it? What evidence is there that Williams wasn’t his? Yeah, by all means go for it with the other managers as well, because it’s going to be a clear minority of signings each time isn’t it, bar Lambert, which was an extraordinary set of circumstances altogether?

Minority or otherwise it is clear that the manager isn't solely accountable for incomings and outgoings. For Lambert, it was the majority of his signings, 100% of them in fact. This despite him getting the job because he himself knew where we were short. Rowett must have had a time machine to scout etebo 5 times after becoming our manager. Perhaps he could use it so as to back in time and learn how to be a decent manager?
