The Bet365 after growing up with the Victoria Ground. yup I really miss wading thru ankle deep piss in the boothen bogs As with most things in S-o-T it was easier to tear it down than skillfully remodel and bring up to date without loosing all the inherent advantages of a "heritage" ground. I do agree peeing up against a brick wall was somewhat outmoded even in the 80's. But nothing can replace that feeling of walking up the steep steps into the Old Boothen when the ground was packed.

There are lots and lots of places where things aren't as big as you imagine them to be from pictures and articles. Fully agree with Niagara Falls - so disappointing after a lifetime of seeing images and putting it on my bucket list. Some of my other disappointments : Mona Lisa in Paris - much smaller than I expected and it's like a rugby scrum to get a glimpse. Manneken Pis in Brussels - again much smaller. Little Mermaid in Copenhagen - is actually, well, little. Statue of Liberty New York - much smaller than expected. Huge queues too for the ferry and the statue itself. Leaning Tower of Pisa - doesn't lean as much as expected We should also do a thread with places which exceeded expectations. was also going to mention Mannekin Pis. Also Electric Brae in Scotland, just what the fuck is it supposed to be...we drove past it 4 or 5 times and didnt even notice. When I was a child, about 1959, my mum and dad took us to see the electric brae. We ran out of petrol on it. What ever it was. My old man had to hitch a lift to buy some petrol. While we just sat in the car in the rain. We never let him forget about it. Scottish holidays don't you love them

Dublin was massively underwhelming for me. Expensive, grim and lacking the charm that it's billed as having. Would definitely go back to Ireland as there's a lot more there that I'd like to see, but Dublin was a bit of a let down.

The buildings were impressive in themselves it was just the angle of dangle that was disappointing.

The Nou Camp. Needs a lick of paint and school kids playing 5 a side on the pitch from Stoke, Rawtenstall and also a team from where I live took the shine off it an all. The Anfield tour was better.

The old New Scotland Yard with the triangular revolving sign.....looks huge on TV but is about the size of a large coffee table in reality.

Mrs Q + I did our usual bank holiday routine of sticking a pin in a map. Today picked out Lancaster. Neither of us had been before, both expected it to be very good. Castle, Roman city, centre of historic art and industry etc.
Hugely disappointing. The castle tour was basically just a couple of court rooms. Expected ancient, or at least Victorian, buildings around the city largely non-existent + the city centre itself was a horrible nondescript place that could have been any modern town.
The day was saved, thank heavens, by The Three Mariners. At least CAMRA have a good idea of what passes as a historic building worth celebrating. The Mariners' beers were very fine too.

Completely the other way but Lincoln is very nice, if you've not been.

I'm really not a Monarchist (in fact, I fucking hate the Royals), so perhaps that was the problem.... I took my ex to see Buckingham Palace though because it was something she wanted to do. I mean, there isn't a huge amount to see is there? It's just a big fucking council house, with a couple of soldiers stood outside, and fucking waves of tourists taking photos of everything from the gates to the pavement. While I was there, they were filming a new episode (at the time) of Top Gear in some weird concept car. That guy Joey from Friends was hanging around and I was much more interested in what they were doing than anything to do with Buckingham Palace or the Royals.

Niagara Falls & Statue of Liberty good. Dublin overrated. Eden Project just about tops the list of disappointments for me, I agree with the Eden Project - very disappointing. We'd been in the biomes and had a general wander around the site and were ready to leave after about two and a half hours, and we'd deliberately taken it slowly as well.

Everest base camp = shit hole I've heard there's even old sofas lying around. How bad was it? I think it has been cleaned up now, but when I went in 2005 there was a lot of litter. A lot of smelly people, lousy weather (that can't be helped) and a brothel. It was a bit like Burslem on Saturday afternoon in December.
