These couple of Etebo performances, and the feelgood story around Saido, have got to be increasing the chances, albeit fractionally, of us going in Allen-less at the weekend? The chance of the 4-3-3 is always in the background, but after 2 good performances, that would seem odd. If it's a straight shootout between Woods and Allen, it'll be interesting which way he goes. Probably Allen, but you never know. And the prospect of us going in without Shawcross on Saturday is also looming. Seeing those 2 on the bench at the Hawthorns would really be something. We've been discussing it on the Etebo thread. He can't drop either Etebo or Beharino, so either the number 10 spot goes and he pushes Saido further forward in a 433 or Woods is on the bench but either way Allen starts. OR he pushes Berahino forward and plays Etebo as the number 10 ... yuck! But Allen of course still starts. Or he drops Allen. For what it's worth I think he will drop a striker.

Really hard one to call today. I just can't see him not wanting to capitalise on the Saido feel-good factor and desire to get one over West Brom, so he'll surely start, even if he does go in with Woods in a 4-3-3. Interestingly, Spinksy's predicted team has us going in Allen-less in a 4-2-3-1, which does seem a bit unlikely? www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-west-brom-berahino-1956210TEAMS Albion: Johnstone, Dawson, Gibbs, Bartley, Hegazi, Livermore, Brunt, Morrison, Phillips, Gayle, Rodriguez. Stoke: Butland, Martina, Pieters, Shawcross, Martins Indi, Woods, Etebo, Diouf, Berahino, McClean, Crouch. "It will a different tactical challenge with five at the back and we might choose not to go with a second striker and if that’s the case he (Saido) might have to wait, but if he’s just scored you want to get them straight back out there" www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-ryan-woods-albion-1956986“If he (Woods) had been signed in time last weekend - which wasn’t any fault of our own - he probably would have had a good chance of playing then,” says the Stoke boss.
“But with us winning two games, it might change that, but he’s certainly a fantastic option to have. He’s fit enough to go straight into the team, whether he does or not will be revealed... soon."
“Peter Etebo coming into the side means we’ve got a bit of time to work with Ryan and haven’t got to chuck him in, but he is exactly what we wanted to get into the building.”

Woods is a shoo-in.
Etebo can't be dropped now.
Allen can be dropped, unless we need a dog chasing a balloon.
So, an interesting one Gary??

Give Rowett credit because it’s hard to pick a team, we now have quality competition for most positions and also have the players that that can play in a different formation.

Rutland Martina Shawcross BMI Pieters Woods Etebo Ince Bojan McClean/Diouf (can't decide) Berahino

Think he will persist with 442 for a while. (as with Brum and Burton - his route to get some results, with a literal "return to basics") and evolve in Spring (aka Derby - when he adopted 3-4 systems for different games).
Phase 1: Today Butland Cuco Shawx BMI Pieters Ince Etobo Allen Maclean Bera Afobe
Phase 2: Drop the underwhelmers/out of form/not fitting in; intergate the new & returning, become a better unit Butland Bauer Williams BMI Cuco Ince Etobo* Woods* Maclean* Bera Afobe *Battling with Clucas
Phase 3: Start to be able to play a more attacking 4231 as well so have second system which is interchanged with one above) Butland Bauer Williams BMI Cuco Woods Etobo** Diouf Ince* Maclean** Afobe* *Battle with Bera; **Battle with Clucas
Phase 3b: Start to be able to play a more counter attacking 532 as well Butland Bauer Williams Shawx BMI Cuco Woods Etobo Clucas Afobe Bera* *Battle with Ince

Is there such a thing as a best 11?
Some things we already knew:
- Ryan and Erik are no longer as good as they were pre 2016 - Bauer and Edwards both look better at wing back than at RB
What we now know:
- Joe, Tebby and Woods are all good enough (but whether they complement one another, we'll just have to see)
- lnce has genuine pace and likes a shot - Saido looks to be on the way back
What we can't yet know:
- would GR consider going 3-5-2? - will Phoebe come good?
So, to answer the OP, l'll go
Jack Tina Williams Bruno Bauer Woods Tebby Joe Clucas Two from Phoebe, Saido and Ince.

The biggest problem is the manager doesn't seem to know.

We have a squad that is utterly devoid of wide players.
McLean will do a job in terms of effort but he's not pulled up any trees.
Ince when played on the right drifts inside and looks anything but a wide player.
Unfortunately the legacy of Hughes leaves a squad heavily balanced towards 3 at the back/wing backs.
It didnt work under Hughes as we had no wing backs. We arguably do now.
I think we need to get Bojan in the team too and this is the best way.
For me it is
-----------Butland-----------
------Martina Williams BMI------ Bauer---------------Clucas/McLean -------Etebo/Allen/Woods------- ---------Bojan/Ince----------- -------Afobe Berahino--------
Take the game to teams.
It would require solid work on the training ground so both defensive midfielders are aware of their responsibilities when the fullback(s) have pushed on

Not wishing injury on anyone but Allen picking ups minor knock during the International break may allow Rowett to drop in and fall upon his best side

The biggest problem is the manager doesn't seem to know. Judging by the OP question and the number of posts - I deduce that 'travellingstokie' is in fact Gary Rowett...

Butland Bauer Shawcross Indi Martina Woods Etebo Ince Bojan Clucas Afobe Tough on Bera, McClean and Williams who have done ok I feel. Allen needs to improve Agree with that line up. And its a 14 man game, so those four plus crouch are good options on the bench. We are six games in, only now is it worth starting to draw any conclusions and I believe we are very close to getting it right and going on a run. One defeat in the next ten should see us into a challenging position. There are a few respected posters on here (alongside the usual doom merchants and drama queens) who seem to believe we are the next Sunderland. I can't see it myself.

I cannot believe that with all the evidence provided in game time over a long period that I am still reading names such as Diouf, Pieters, Shawcross or Crouch anywhere near a starting eleven. It is pretty obvious that we have been using defenders that are a liability. For what ever reason Shawcross's performances have fallen way below the standards required. The main problem is who have we got that we can put any faith in even Butland is looking low on confidence! I have been pleased that Berahino has made giant strides to prove people wrong but I am not convinced that the system is working and whilst this is going on fans are reigniting a myth about Bojan who has shown nothing to suggest that he could be influential in reigniting our season. I thought Martina had a steady start but there is a lingering doubt about his ability to take on too much responsibility. Our team is in a dreadful mess and the transfer team have failed abysmally to acquire much needed strategic players and Gayle rubbed salt in the wounds last Saturday! It is in hope that all of us name the new signings that we have got as our saviours. It is the same with my thoughts also. I just hope I can pin my faith in them and come out smiling. IMO at the moment when all players are fit I would go with Butland in goal, a back three of Martina, Williams and Indi, wing backs of Bauer and Clucas, midfield three of Etebo, Woods and Allen and two forwards in Ince and Afobe. My subs would be Federici, Edwards, Pieters, McClean, Berahino, Shawcross and Crouch My faith is sorely tested and my starting eleven could change quite quickly!

For me it's far from the best, but I am pretty sure GR will continue with his favoured 4-3-3 Butland Martina Williams Shawcross Pieters Allen Woods Clucas Ince Afobe McClean
That line up contains 7 of his chosen players, removes the two that the Pizza boys signed (Bauer Etebo) to make his political point. But with this team he has no place to hide. However fast forward to the end of the season when we haven't achieved promotion (that team simply doesn't have enough creativity or goals) and his comment will be it took 10 games in to get the team he wanted. 'Not my fault Guv'

Rowett mentioned that Woods allowed Allen to push further forward and make things happen at West Brom so when Clucas is fully fit I think we could see something like
Butland Martina Williams Indi Pieters Woods Clucas Ince Allen McLean Afobe
I’d like to see Bauer RB & Martina LB but can’t see it unfortunately
