... these must seem like unfamiliar and scary times. We're staring down the barrel of Division 3, there's fan unrest, high managerial turnover, dissatisfaction with the Board etc. etc.
For seasoned Stoke supporters, this is like finding an old, comfortable pair of slippers in the back of the cupboard and slipping back into them. I'm actually experiencing a tinge of nostalgia for the crises of yore. At this rate we'll soon need to set up a fanzine to voice the dissatisfaction of the ordinary supporter in a humorous and subversive way.

Just as the original Oatcake is ceasing publication = irony History truly is cyclical!

Young supporter: "Oh my god, the club's in crisis!" Older supporter: "Pfft, bitch please, come back to me when we've appointed Brian Little with zero budget".

You merely adopted the football league. I was born in the third tier, molded by it. I didn't see the Premier League until I was already a man.

Been going over 30 years so I've seen all of that, but it still doesn't mean I should be content with the current shit show.

I’ve found myself singing that old Simon & Garfunkel line ‘Welcome darkness my old friend’ over and over in my head a lot in the last couple of weeks. Rather than seek help I’ve decided it’s entirely football related 🙂

Newbies don't get '3rd division', we didn't want to be there but looking back they were 'fun' times.. This could still be a good season.. Success out of adversity... Well maybe...

We do need to rediscover the art of having fun at football while being shit. We used to be good at it.

Ah and the glorious days of Phil Heath "going on a run", Nicky Morgan wandering around the box looking lost, and the main entertainment coming from inflatable Pink Panthers. (Penk Ponthers?!)

It won't effect the newer fans but may have a negative effect on kids getting into the club at school age. Growing up in the mid 90s wasn't very fun for me being the only Stoke fan at School (went a school in Crewe), watching us go down with Man City while all my mates were still buzzing from their promotion trip to Wembley in the Championship. Wouldn't swap it for the world mind!

the only difference was then we could almost understand why it was happening , lack of money , uninsured roof blowing off the ground , feels worse this time as all the people leading us into this current disaster both ona nd of the pitch are paid handsomely for their carnage .

These days fans have the illusion of being able to affect board room decisions. Now there's forum polls, petitions, attempted fan takeovers and the like. We're deluding ourselves.
The trick is to accept we're shit, have a drink and sing songs about how David Speedie is a wanker. Embrace the shitness, it's almost cathartic.

Exactly, 52 years after my first game I have enjoyed some wonderful highs but the lows, some of them very very low, have been much more numerous. If you are new to this get used to it and enjoy your beer, some seasons the highlight has been a rendition of the pint of Bass song at a Christmas away game!

On the flip side during our run in the 3rd division I got to see Thorney week in week out. Having said that i actually think that team would beat this one.

Watching Lightbourne arse around a pitch for 90 minutes carried some comedic value as you could at least content yourself to know he was just outright shit. They also disappeared from your consciousness for a week apart from the sentinel so you could step away from it apart from the muck slinging at work. This lot, manager included, just enrage me. The money, status, constant publicity and wearisome platitudes just combine to remind you every day what a complete fuck up they are making of it. Back then we deserved to go down because we were just shit but this lot are clearly far more capable than they are showing and that is unforgivable.

For those of us who starting supporting Stoke in the early 90s, this is simply a regression to the mean. Some of the last 10 years were brilliant but it's the shit times that mould you as a person. Supporting a crap football team makes you a better human being.

The world has changed in the last 20-30 years. For all the reasons you have stated and also personally. Just like many other people I've actually got other (better?) things to do with my time these days. If I'm being entertained, or even if I'm not but believe those on the pitch in front of me or in the directors box behind me actually care then I'll make the time to be there. If not then the reality is I've plenty of things - for reasons of either pleasure or duty - that could justifiably make a call on that time.

Nostalgia ! Yeah, can`t wait for the return of `We`re shit and we know we are` and `We`re not bothered any more`.
Those were the days my friend, we thought they`d never end.

Some good stuff on this thread, particularly from those pointing out how times have changed.
I miss Bryan Small and Chris Short just as much as the next fan but that was because I was 14 years old at the time and didn't know any better.
Simpler times but also simpler minds. Football was better before the internet but we have it now so let's not pretend we can ignore all the shit and just go match-to-match, however good an idea that sounds.

The next few weeks could well be reminder for us older fans, and a welcome to newer fans, to the Stoke City rollercoaster ride that can be the odd up followed by the inevitable fall that sometimes becomes a plummet. We’ve been there before and, no doubt, we’ll be here again. Just hold on tightly.

That's a mighty bold statement there Pricey. PRICEY! If it wasn't for the Oatcake, and then the internet Oatcake, we'd still be strangers in the same land. And that saddens me. Think of all the other things that the Internet Oatcake has enabled, from trips to All Tomorrows Parties... etc.
