But James McLean wouldn't be allowed to have an IRA flag on his boot and give the Republican salute if he scored would he?

His family were refugees taken in by Switzerland.
Had they not allowed them in he probably wouldn't have ever gone on to be a professional footballer and none of us would have ever known who he was.
Not sure if that makes humanitarian acts a good thing or a bad thing.

Thing is, no one other than those two and maybe a few others would even know what it meant and it would be seen as simply a celebration. Its only when the likes of FIFA start this that it escalates.

It's not a surprise is it?
FIFA have always punished stuff like this.
The irony being this whole World Cup is a political showcase for Putin.

F@ k persecution of minority groups To be honest, I do not see why on earth if you were playing for Switzerland you'd do an Albanian eagle celebration - even though theyre Albanian and playing against Serbia. Its downright stupid and provocative. Maybe banning them for 2 games is a bit far, but I do think that celebration is an insult to Switzerland and their fans.

Why does shaqiri not play for Albania ? Why would he want to play for Albania? He was born in Kosovo which was part of the former Yugoslavia and which was claimed by Serbia when Yugoslavia disintegrated. Kosovo then declared independence from Serbia. He can play for Switzerland (where he moved as a refugee when he was young) or Kosovo, now it has a football team recognised by FIFA.

Not to dissimilar to Gascoigne and his flute playing antics of a celebration. The pair of them should have known better.

He can play for Switzerland (where he moved as a refugee when he was young) or Kosovo, now it has a football team recognised by FIFA. Kosovo is largely made up of people of Albanian heritage (apparently over 80% of the Kosovan population are those of Albanian descent) and his parents have Albanian heritage don't they? Hence him making the symbol of the Albanian double headed eagle in his celebration. P.S. I'm not one of these who'd say "if he cares that much he should bugger off and play for them" as i see no issue with him representing Switzerland at all. Simply explaining that he could play for Albania, although he apparently turned them down. Having said that, it was an extremely silly thing to do when he was representing a country that have nothing whatsoever to do with the Serbian-Kosovan issues. No need to drag the Swiss team into the controversy when it was in front of the Serbian fans at all, and i'm pretty sure they won't have welcomed the spotlight his or Xhaka's celebrations have put them under when it's nothing to do with Switzerland. Both have a right to their political beliefs, but i don't think they should be publicly displaying them when representing an uninvolved nation. Whilst at the WC they are ambassadors of Switzerland not Kosovo or Albania....that's the choice they made when choosing to represent Switzerland. They can't have it both ways

Whilst at the WC they are ambassadors of Switzerland not Kosovo or Albania....that's the choice they made when choosing to represent Switzerland. They can't have it both ways Yes, I knew most of that. I think the point I am making though is that as soon as he was old enough to play professional football he could have opted for Albania or Switzerland but not for Kosovo as Kosovo was not recognised by FIFA until long after Shaq became a footballer. He could of course have then opted to play for Kosovo and chose not to - presumably out of loyalty to the country he grew up in. But I was responding to a question as to why he didn't play for Albania - in the circumstances it would have been very odd if he had chosen them - I suspect in his mind the choice was always Switzerland - or Kosovo once they were FIFA recognised. I know what I meant, anyway!

Anelka performed a salute associated with neo-nazis (lets be kind and assume it was unknowingly).
This is not the same (Xhaka's father was imprisoned and beaten by the Serbs) but yes you imagine it won't pass unpunished. I suspect they'll be fined - the precedent was set when Fifa fined the home nations for having poppies on their shirts.

But the bottom line is Shaq is a top quality International footballer, whereas McClean really is just shit.
