Without wishing to dwell too much on last season, when was the moment that you just knew in your bones that we were going to go down? I mean, you probably still had a flicker of hope but, essentially, you just knew it was inevitable?
For me, the Charlie Adam penalty against Brighton.

Probably Butland's blunder against Leicester clinched it for me. The situation was recoverable after that game - but somehow I knew it wasn't going to be our year.

New Years day, the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. The general way we played a game we needed to win and win well we were a massive let down and i knew the quality and fight had gone from the team/squad. do not forget Mr H had rested players the game before to set this up as a must win.
Newcastle at the time were like a team we would beat normally in any of the previous seasons.

What about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against Bournemouth away or how about Ashley Barnes taking 4pts off us with his 89th winner at Burnley & his equaliser at our place. He scored a 3rd of his goal tally against us this season...

Bournemouth away. It was a sickener but at least I knew for certain then. And I did get a little bit of comfort from knowing it's exactly what we deserved. In fact I kept looking at the table and wondering how on earth we weren't bottom of the league.

Palace away....one nil up, Shawcross I think it was, misses the chance for two nil...the rest was inevitable as far as I was concerned. Just had a feeling from early in the season we were screwed.

Coventry cup game. It was clearly evident things weren’t right behind the scenes. Poor performances on the pitch and things not right off it... it was only going to end one way.

Everton at home.
I said before that game if we win we stay up, if we lose we’ll go the rest of the season without a win. I was still confident we’d catch someone like Huddersfield at that point....

Honestly and my mates will back me up
It was the home game v Southampton that we actually WON with a late Crouch goal ....they absolutely battered us and rammed home our deficiencies
I returned to the CC and said then we were doomed ....Manchester City away confirmed it

Bournemouth at home for me was the day I knew that I was looking at relegation contenders. We missed our chance to fix it.

When we appointed Lambert.
Literally unbelievable. Same here. There was time to fix it but there was never anything about Lambert which suggested he was the man to do it. Catastrophic decision.

Liverpool at home:
Gutless, spineless, uncoordinated, unimaginative, uncreative, directionaless, slow tired, predictable, unresponsive
And those were the good bits 😬

The West Ham defeat at home - we were absolutely woeful, lacking in fight, no tactics, nothing. It just seemed to sum up the club as a whole and there seemed to be no acknowledgement, desire or impetus from the management to change anything. After that we were gone as far as I was concerned.

Newcastle at the time were like a team we would beat normally in any of the previous seasons. Their keeper was MOM in that game though? I felt we'd go down the day I found out Hughes was going to be sacked after the forthcoming cup tie. Until then, I always felt we'd do enough to scrape through

Not sacking Hughes in November, rubber stamped by appointing Lambert after Coates pissed his knickers after a nothing cup defeat (in the grand scheme of things)

When Hughes purposely threw the game against Chelsea. At that point it was clear he had gone quite mad and the club was complete basket case.

Cartwright and Scholes still at the club

Tbh I thought we still might be OK even after the Coventry debacle. But then the board panicked fired Hughes without having a replacement lined up. Fucked up replacing him, and had a complete melt down in appointing the serial loser Lambert. As soon as Lambert was confirmed I knew we were finished. It was shameful stewardship by those at the top of the club.

Charlie missing the pen was the final nail for me. But in reality, it’s rare for an established team like Stoke to get relegated in one season. We looked like we were in decline from the start of the 16-17 season when we were getting caned by quite a few teams, and just looked vulnerable. We got away with it with a few wins inspired by individuals, but for me the signs were there. I really think it could be the wake up cal we needed, and get everyone in the club focused in the same direction, because we completely lost both our sense of direction and even worse, our identity. I’m looking forward to next season more than I have for a while, so ........ goaaaaaaarn Stoke! 😊
