I can't remember England winning the World cup so I'd like to see it once before I leave this world. I've seen Stoke in the top flight in 3 different periods. Stoke and Proud English and Proud Each to his own but I have zero pride in being English - it means nothing to me whereas Stoke mean everything

It's a tough one. When England do well, people get very emotionally invested in it and the mood of the nation lifts. Italia 90 and Euro 96 were fantastic once we were out of the groups and people started to believe we could do it. People who were around in '66 all remember where they watched it and TV shows and books are still being written about it. It's something I'd like to experience at least once before I kick the bucket. It isn't a tough one at all, if it was a choice between Stoke finishing 12th or 13th in any divsion or England winning the world cup I would go with us gaining one extra place. Wow...you're such an amazing ace super duper Stoke fan.

Stoke to stay up. Everything else is irrelevant. And I mean everything.

I'm "club before country" as much as the next guy but is there really any point in us staying up now? For what? So we can have another year of complacent mismanagement, ill-judged investment, blunt performances and hovering around the relegation zone before we eventually drop a la Sunderland? We're talking about scraping survival in one season, it's hardly an FA Cup or title win is it.
So unless it's England to win the World Cup or Stoke to stay up [and have a root-and-branch overhaul of policy and procedures, a change of personnel at recruitment, management and potentially boardroom level introducing a fresh and progressive approach with a stated strategy to get the club challenging for Europe within a reasonable time-frame, among other ambitious but attainable objectives], I'll take a bit of national glory for once in my life cheers. (Incidentally if it was the latter option I think I'd take it even if it meant going down.)

Generally, I don't give much of a shit about the England side these days and am much more club than country too, but I would like to see England lift the world cup once in my lifetime and if that means we got relegated then I think I could live with that after ten years in the Premier League, a Cup Final and European football. Seeing the U17s and U20s win their WCs last year was great. If the question was win the world cup and Stoke never again make it into the top flight, well that's a lot tougher to answer.

I love Stoke & England and they never have to play each other so there is no conflict of interests - whats the problem?

This is the start of the plethora of threads where some of us show how fanatical they are about Stoke City by telling us all how they are unarsed about England because England are shyte. Then despite being shyte they are all hurt when we get knocked out. If we are shyte that's all anyone can expect isn't it?
All part of the mass of contradictions and misplaced closed minded way the England team is viewed.

Well I am more an Ireland than England man but I can't even believe this is a question !! If you asked me would I take Ireland ( or England ) never qualifying for a major tournament again in exchange for Stoke staying up I would have no hesitation in choosing Stoke

Has anyone in the history of the whole wide world ever ever EVER actually been properly presented with a scenario like this? Perhaps they have. Maybe in 1966 Alf went on Sheffield Wednesday's oatcake message board and asked what they would prefer, FA Cup or England to win the World Cup. When the Owls all said England Alf told the Wednesday manager when they were 2-0 up. The unfortunately named Mike Trebilcock got started and the writing was on Roger Waters 1979 magnum opus.

I've never declared a preference. My reason for the post (elsewhere ) is to demonstrated how daft it is. And as I said there's a self serving element to it all.
