Savage is an ignoramus who can't see the obvious even when it's staring him in the face.

“Worst decision of the season”😄

Worst decision of the season was not sacking Hughes but replacing him with a bloke who is too scared of losing to win games of football.

We'd have more points than we do today. Hard to say if it would've been enough though.

I believe that but but and fucking but the previous 23 games had made his sacking unavoidable

I believe sacking Hughes was the right decision but sadly taken far too late in the season, sadly Savage may have been right but he was totally wrong in defending Hughes for so long over the last 12 months and in reality Hughes should have left last May Stoke fans would have had fond memories of him and his stock would have still been high enough for the likes of RS do question the decision without the damage that was done to Stoke because we didn't remove him last summer.

I just posted this on the Stafylidis thread...I hadn't seen this one.
I don't know if you (or anyone else for that matter) listened to 606 last night but Savage was indulging in a spot of fishing with Stoke fans and Mark Hughes and he eventually got a couple of bits. He accepted that Mark Hughes should take a share of the blame for our relegation but maintained that we would have stayed up had he stayed. He then made a couple of comments by way of challenging fans who questioned his signings to say "how do you know if Mark Hughes was responsible for the signings" to which one of them responded about the recent statements re only 2 players signing without sanctioning the arrivals.
I tried to call and get on but they didn't ring me back because I wanted to challenge Savage a little bit. He's obviously a friend of Hughes and he's used that line of defence for him consistently so I wanted to get him to expand on what he knew.
Either way, I liked Mark Hughes in the main but he should have been sacked long before he was not when he was. However, I can't currently stand his smug face

Southampton (with Austin, Gabbiadini, Long, Redmond, Tadic and a few others who would have improved our squad) picked up 8 points from the 8 games that Hughes was manager. If he had stayed at Stoke and achieved a similar return of 16 points from the 16 games after he was sacked here, we would have still been relegated! Savage talking out of his 1980s perm as per usual.

I think anyone who thinks we would have been ok under Hughes is deluding themselves.
We were shipping goals at a ridiculous rate, would get thrashed regularly, let two goals a game in, had no-one to score regularly at the other end, lost to fourth division Coventry in a game where several players including our keeper appeared not all that bothered and appeared to have a team which didn't want Hughes as a manager.
Aside from being disappointed we went down, the thing that really grates with me is that Hughes doesn't have this on his CV. Twice now he's been sacked before his team got relegated, QPR and now us. Expect the same to happen inf Saints struggle next year and he will still be a manager who doesn't do relegation. no, just makes a significant contribution towards it!
His managerial record is mixed at best and his managerial reputation in the game is bizarrely high.

He has landed on his feet at Southampton. A good group of players with a lot of money to spend no doubt in the summer (Van Dijk money) - he'll do well there I'm sure but I don't think he would have kept us up - no way,

Solid base of players that needed a bit of adding and trimming. Hadn't thought of the Van Dijk money though, the thought of him spunking that money up the wall excites me.

We will never know for sure but imho that's what I think. Yes, that's what I think too, he would have found the 4 extra points we ultimately needed somewhere in that raft of soft fixtures we had in the middle of the Lambert reign where we failed to win any. I believe the Cov City defeat was more than a premature FA Cup exit and a humiliation, it robbed us of our Premier League status too. We'll never know for sure of course, all we do know is that the replacement manager couldn't find them.
