An Englishmans home is his castle , I'd do the same and anyone with any self respect would also. Justice as it should be especially considering how leniant and corrupt and back to front the modern British jusitce system is . I can see more and more people taking the law into their own hands as a result of the system failing the people . In short yes , Anglo - Saxon justice well delivered here and rightly so

78 year old man forced into his kitchen by two intruders, one armed with a screwdriver. Surely there's no such thing as excessive force in defending yourself in this situation with a threat to his life.

They broke into the wrong house that night, Jesus - what a guy.
As Felonious says - 2 on 1 you're scared for your life, there can't be a thing called excessive force there.

It's an absolute disgrace if he faces any charge let alone murder. The old man was obviously in fear for his own life and took an opportunity to defend himself against these two scumbags. It's a pity he didn't manage to injure the other burglar as well.
As has been said he should be commended for his bravery, not prosecuted !

the other night I thought somebody was in my place, im sorry to say I grabbed the knife I keep in my bed side drawers and went to look, if I found some rat in my place I would attack first and think after, as it was nobody was in and the lad next door was still building furniture 2 weeks after moving in at 1 am in the morning
where my safety and that of the current future ex mrs flea79 is concerned no step is too far and I imagine if you have children under your roof the urge is even stronger, if some tool violated my home then they should expect a cold reception
this poor old bloke will hopefully be exonerated and the guy who has died should be found guilty and sentenced posthumously, his body can be released once the time of his sentence has passed
criminals thrive upon the tolerance of society

The law when it comes to things like that doesn’t apply inside my house. Im the king of my castle not any copper , magistrate or judge. Ill answer to my own conscience and morals only and no ones else's certainly not a justice system that panders to the wrong do'ers . If that means I ever have to do time as a result of defending me and mine then ill do so with my head held high. If the government doesn’t protect the people the people will protect themselves .

Tony Martin got 3 years for killing a pikey that burgled him, and his accomplice, who survived, tried to sue him for wounding him. FFS... Prison... They should have given him a medal...

Tin hat on.....
In my opinion he should be arrested, charged and then released on bail or a promise of good behaviour or something.
There should be a trial where if the story is as it is being reported, he should be found not guilty and released. It should be carefully explained to him that nobody is out to put him inside so not to get too stressed about it.
But if, during the trial, it came to light that he'd always fancied committing a murder* and one night was chatting to these two people in the pub, and then invited them back for a nightcap and a bit of supper (for example), what then? Is he still a plucky 78 year old, or is he a cold blooded killer regardless of his age.
At the moment the only thing everyone is judging this on is what is in the press but who knows the absolute truth of it? That is why there should be a trial. Justice must be seen to be done.
And good luck to the old fella if he's telling the truth. The boy done good.
* other motives are available.

We were burgled and I caught hold of one. Struggled with him for a good 30mins (seemed like way longer) until the police arrived who then promptly had him away, but not before asking him if he wanted to press charges against me and then releasing him without charge the next morning. They didn't even bother investigating further either, and weren't interested in pursuing the one that pulled the knife on me and had it on his heels with all the jewellery.
Burglars are scum! The old fella should be given a medal.

I hate burglars myself but murdering them is a step too far, you should be lawfully allowed to assault them and aggressively restrain them but not murder.

I was attacked by a neighbour on my front doorstep a few years ago. Introduced him to the effects of home made pepper spray. I ended up in court on ABH charge but found not guilty on basis of self defence.
Would do the same again in a similar situation. Pepper spray is supposedly illegal to possess under the Firearms Act, but there's a loophole where home made spray in an innocuous container is perfectly legal on private property. I made up military grade stuff in an air freshener spray bottle. Never charged with any firearms offence. Every home should have some!

we don't know the details. If he was attacked and grabbed a knife and stabbed the intruder and that's it then it isn't murder. But it must be investigated.
If he stabbed him in (let's say the arm) the intruder drops his screw driver and holds his arm up saying "ok, I'm sorry, call the police " and he turns to leave and the bloke stabs him 5 times in the back and a few more times on the floor then that's murder.
We don't know the full details.

If you are prepared to break the law and enter someone’s property with the intention of stealing and committing violence you should be prepared for retribution in the form of self defence. And that self defence should applie for imminent danger to property as well as yourself.

We don't know the full details. Of course we don't, but you mustn't stop people from expressing righteous indignation based on a few bits of information otherwise where would this board be?! He's been arrested on suspicion of murder because someone died violently as a result of his actions. As someone else said, this is just normal due process. If he stabbed this bloke in a struggle fearing for his life he won't be charged. If he stabbed him as the bloke was trying to leave or giving up, well, that's different. But we don't know what happened so all the self-righteous indignation is a bit silly. Why not wait and see what actually happened? You have to be careful if you give free rein to all homeowners to kill anyone entering their property illegally. All this will do is ensure that all burglars go armed, which increases the likelihood of someone dying, either the homeowner or the burglar whereas at present neither is likely to. Basically, it becomes like America where everyone has a gun and thousands get killed.
