Doesn't surprise me at all, and I wouldn't blame Jack if he wants away..... I'd hold out for £50m though.

It's the only likely destination for him I'd suggest, would be decent all round.

40m is decent but do we think we could squeeze another 10-15m on the back of a decent World Cup campaign

Could we have Mignolet and Ings plus some money included in this deal? I think Mignolet is an OK goalkeeper, but he struggles with the pressure of playing for a top club. He was really good when played for Sland and he has also been good in several matches this season. Ings is a goalscorer and I will certainly say he is a realistic upgrade on what we have at the moment.

I can see Scholes and Coates like a couple of Fagan characters cackling with joy about the thought of that money. Now, who can they sell next to cover up the loss of money through relegation due to their monumental fuck up.

But I would not be happy about Mignolet. Sometimes he looks like a decent keeper but, for me, he has far too many games where he looks well below Premier League standard. I accept that Butland has had his problems but, to some extent that has been because of bad luck with injuries (which must have had an effect mentally) and the form of the whole team must have had an effect on him. I'm sure if Mignolet had been in OUR goal we would have been several points below West Brom by now.

I'd want Ryan Kent and Woodburn if possible in any deal.

Do player + cash deals even still happen anymore?
And even if they do none of the aforementioned players would be a jot bit interested in the Championship in the unlikely event they were interested in playing for us.

I actually think Mignolet is a decent keeper and actually similar to Jack in that he's a good shot stopper but some of his other aspects are suspect like decision making. He did well for another average club in Sunderland which earned him his big move to Liverpool so he's not one of those keepers who only looks good behind a good defence and has proven before that he can perform for lesser teams too.
I obviously think Jack's a good keeper but personally I don't think he's worth £40m since his injury and his price is inflated due to being English. His kicking is poor and costly mistakes have started to creep into his game. £40m is more than he's worth and if we could get Mignolet as part of the deal too then I'd be happy with that.
Otherwise if we stay up I'd go for Ben Foster from West Brom. And if we go down Grant will be good enough.

He could be another Foster come to think of it-he looked to have a glittering career in front of him when Fergie signed him but made some high profile mistakes and was soon sidelined.

So with the cracking negotiating skills that Scholes is well known for how much of that money do cash strapped Brum get?

It doesn't matter what he's wprth, the market is silly and Liverpool have lots of money. May as well hold out for £60,000,000 instead of selling ourselves short.

These stories always seem to coincide with a Liverpool loss. The £70m on Van Dijk plus £40m on Jack would still be wasted unless they bin the other 3 defenders too.

Inevitable but still sad. To think that 2 seasons ago we were a top half team who were looking to progress. And now look at us, watching other teams results while we slowly get cut adrifft.

That works for everyone, if true. £40m is good money for him.
Most of the reports have seemed to be indicating they were favouring the Brazilian option though.

One of those where you can’t say no to a player wanting to progress his career. He’s given us a few good years and is ready and has every right to move onwards and upwards. He will do it professionally as well and will get a great reception whenever he returns to play us.
A good World Cup could add an extra £5-10 million onto that price, although with Scholes in charge of negotiations it wouldn’t surprise me if we sold him for £3 million and they convinced us to take Robbie Fowler as part of the deal.
