I’m beginning to realise magnitude of what getting relegated will mean. It’s going to hit us on oh so many levels & for this I cannot forgive Leslie, he’s ripped the soul out of our club & Coates let him. I’m sorry for catastrophising, but that’s how I see it. I know it’s a 1st World issue, but it could have been avoided. A very expensive error 😱

I know it’s a 1st World issue, but it could have been avoided. A very expensive error 😱 I understand how drastically this will hit us if we get relegated, but..... , Stoke City does not lose it’s soul by being relegated. Which begs the question what is the “soul” of Stoke City? The attacking flair of the early seventies? The flukey never say die attitude like the Cardiff playoff semi? The park the bus, hit me as hard as you can but I won’t let a goal in of the binary season? The rugby team of our early prem years? The BMX wonder games? And note that any of these “souls” exist at any level we might play at. So what is the “soul” of Stoke City FC? For me it has always been the dogged determination and unwillingness to quit. You beat us in the FA Cup semi? We’ll win it next year! We lost in the promotion playoffs? We’ll get it right next year! We’re in danger of relegation? We’re not down yet and we’ll win the next game! After 150 years of non-achievement? We’re going to be the team of the century, next time!

A couple of years ago I started a thread saying I thought Hughes had lost the plot, it was the window after our 6-1 thrashing of Liverpool and everybody including Hughes was talking about next levels, top six and all that bollox. I got a hiding on the Oatie for suggesting he had lost the plot. That pre-season was horrific I whinged about no replacement for Nzonzi and the below average signings, the letting go of our best central defender to one of our rivals and the frighteningly poor defence in our pre-season friendlies, the game against Porto sent shivers down my spine, as a defensive unit we were utterly dross. I whinged in the next window and the next about lack of cover in defensive positions, no athleticism in the middle of the park - yet only myself and Benji could see what was happening I was not in denial but angry that the club was going backwards massively from a position of strength - the club, however, was in denial and quite a few of our fans to. When we signed Fletcher I was depressed, when Arnie went angry, quickly followed by acceptance that this season was going to be a relegation battle. Then we got rid of Hughes and with it came a glimmer of hope, could we sign a forward thinking man, somebody modern, a great coach and mind. Then came Lambert and with it anger followed quickly by depression and after yesterdays game back to acceptance At the start of the season I predicted between 35-40 pts while some on here were still predicting europe I would take 35pts right now - sadly I think we all would. I do wish you lot would shut up about Benji like he was some kind of prophet - the twat has been saying the same thing for the last god knows how many years, but way back into Pulis' reign as well (as a different poster). The fact that we are now going down does not prove any degree of accuracy or foresight ffs! I've lost count of the number of occasions he's tried to predict the number of points we'd get from the next ten games or so and been miles out! That said, I agree with the comments about the defence. Similarly, I was horrified by how open our defence has always been under Hughes once he moved away from the Pulis cage system. Perhaps it was the contrast with Pulis system that so horrified me when I first saw Hughes's defence play but it's always looked way too easy to play against to me. I think the fact that our midfield and attacking options were still fairly strong hid the defensive frailties for a while. Basically, we controlled enough of the mid-pitch battle and could rely on Arnie, Crouch and SJW to pitch in with enough goals to keep us going. Once we lost the top and middle, the horror show at the back became all too apparent. What poster was Benji before then?

I’m not sure I was ready for the full reality of our situation & the size & impossibility of the task ahead. This paragraph from the BBC highlights the predicament we find ourselves in:- “Slowly but surely, Stoke City's squad has been allowed to fall into disrepair and it must now be rebuilt in the unforgiving environment of the Championship.” Read the whole sorry article: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44017358

However I am looking forward to see where we end up in preseason.

I accepted relegation a couple months back and so did the vast majority of my mates.
Must admit it felt strange driving past the stadium this morning and seeing the Prem flag waving on top of The Sentinel Stand (or whatever it's called these days). Looking forward to the away days next season, but got no confidence in this board to get good money for our players and invest wisely on Championship proven player, who are a good age and have PACE!
