Just writing my next article for Stoke's Greatest Of All Time side.
Having a real struggle picking the name to play alongside Hudson (which is obviously a given)
If you can forgive a bit of translation position-wise, Frank Soo of the 30s side seems like a contender. Other prominent names are Johnny Sellars (40s/50s), John Mahoney (70s), Paul Bracewell (80s) and Steven N'Zonzi (10s).
Of these names, I've only really seen N'Zonzi play (I just about remember Bracewell in his Everton days). What do older Stokies reckon...? Who should get the nod to play alongside Sir Alan?

Howard Kendall, although past his best days when he joined us he still oozed quality, and undoubtedly passed on lots of experience to the likes of Bracewell and Heath. Also Tony “Zico” Kelly if only he could have passed a pie shop like he could pass a ball.

Gleghorn for me our most intelligent player, sold him too early as well.

Before my time but the consensus seemed to be that we had an ace midfield with people like Micky Thomas and Sammy Mac before Barker opted to bypass it entirely. The late Robbie James was pretty good as well I think?
Nzonzi is the best central midfield player I’ve seen at Stoke. Before that it was probably Gleghorn.
My dad really rated John Mahoney.

Mickey Thomas for his industry, spirit and skill. Mickey Thomas was Joe Allen with bells on. Up there with Steino and Arnie as one of my all time favourite Stoke players. Kavanagh deserves to be thought of in a much better light than he is. Would have shone even brighter if he'd not been surrounded by shite for most of his time here. Gleghorn was a great player to watch.

Rory probably deserves a mention too. Our best prem midfielder after Zonz (and probably Joe). Very clever player, head always up, had a great few years in the DM role.

Jimmy Mcllroy , Denis Violet, Peter Dobing all were better than Hudson.

The Zonz......After he left, the wheels started to fall off.

McIlroy, Thomas, Kendall and Beeston - different types of players but still class central midfielders.... but on his day Hudson was imperious.

The midfield of Heath, Bracewell and McIlroy was probably our best since the 70s. Shame Barker insisted in pinging the ball over their heads.
Ageing Howard Kendall in our pre promotion year looked different class even then.
Depends what you mean by "best" because Whelan and Mickey Thomas did more than most.
In the PL era probably Zonz looked the part but for 3 months Bojan looked amazing

Beeston was half a yard of pace being a top level player, he would have been some bloody player.
But for me from what I’ve seen Nzonzi is the best I’ve seen in a stoke shirt in midfield

Jimmy Mcllroy , Denis Violet, Peter Dobing all were better than Hudson. I agree. Also, N’zonzi was a marde arse and only performed when he felt like it and only for a very, very short period of time - there was one season when he was really very good. Before that everything was sideways and backwards. Mind you Dobing was a real marde arse (worse than anyone I have ever seen in a Stoke shirt). When he felt up for a game he was a genius, but more often than he couldn’t be bothered. Several Stoke players past and present were potentially brilliant but they would never have played for Stoke if they were more consistent - they would have played for England as well.
