Jimmy Mcllroy , Denis Violet, Peter Dobing all were better than Hudson. They were, all, indeed wonderful players but I would still argue that Hudson and N'Zonzi have the edge. Sammy Mac; Mickey Thomas; Gleg; Bracewell and Josh Mahoney deserve honourable mentions, as does Mike Bernard for his defensive midfield role

Was Eustace always unfit? My impression was that the then manager felt about him much the same way as the current one seems to feel about Ireland.

Nzonzi
Consistency and improvement and going on to do what he’s done.
We still miss him badly

For a short time, Bojan was the best player I've seen at Stoke in 30 years, and, in my opinion, possibly the best ever. I would love to see him back and playing at his peak. So it's Bojan for me, but there are some great names here. Howard Kendall was absolutely brilliant for us, a real class act, and John Mahoney and Rory Delap have strong claims too. I would probably go for Mahoney if not Bojan. First autograph I ever got was Howard Kendall, and remember him as a nipper. When did we sign Howard, and how was his tenure at Stoke City overall? 9 goals in 80 odd games suggests good He played in our two seasons in the Second Division (77/78 and 78/79) and was outstanding for us. I didn't realise/had forgotten that he left us to join Blackburn as player-manager rather than continue playing for us following promotion until I looked at Wikipedia.

What about David Rowson? A midfield with him in it and Vincent Pericard banging them in up top. All time total dream team. BM

I’d be surprised if he was ever just left out on the basis of form or tactics. He had terrible injury problems, although to be fair he seemed to beat them in his later career with Derby and Watford.

I agree. Also, N’zonzi was a marde arse and only performed when he felt like it and only for a very, very short period of time - there was one season when he was really very good. Before that everything was sideways and backwards. Mind you Dobing was a real marde arse (worse than anyone I have ever seen in a Stoke shirt). When he felt up for a game he was a genius, but more often than he couldn’t be bothered. Several Stoke players past and present were potentially brilliant but they would never have played for Stoke if they were more consistent - they would have played for England as well. Nzonzi was one of our best players for all three seasons he was at the club. This myth that he was only good in his last season is bizarre. Can only imagine it stems from the transfer requests and the fact that he ‘gasp’ played nice, simple passes rather than Hollywood balls. This is revisionist history. He very good for a short period of the time and that was when he bothered to show up. I don't recall many goals or many assists for that matter.

Revisionist history is the idea he was only good in his last season. Goals and assists weren't his job. If you go back and look at the reaction from his first season, people on here were absolutely raving that finally we had a midfielder under TP who could actually play football. I remember being at The Hawthorns that season and Snow Hill station just reverberating with Stokies singing his song. He finished second on here in the vote for player of the season. He had a big dip along with the rest of the team that season, and some fans took against him because of his perceived moodiness and the constant transfer requests. He had a minor dip in the first Hughes season but overall was very strong again and a key part of what made the system work. He was phenomenal in his final season.

John Mahoney's a great call. Terrific workhorse, great ball-winner, the Makelele of yesteryear.
